American Truck Simulator is a highly immersive indie simulation game that lets you experience the thrill of trucking across iconic American landscapes. With an AI Community Rating of 88.67%, players praise its realistic driving mechanics, stunning graphics, and the ability to customize and manage your own trucking empire. Whether you're delivering cargo across sunny California, sandy Nevada, or the Grand Canyon State of Arizona, the game offers a captivating journey filled with breathtaking landmarks and challenging routes. Players love the variety of cargo types, detailed truck models, and the freedom to build a successful transportation company from scratch. However, some note repetitive gameplay, occasional crashes, and AI driver behavior as areas for improvement. Despite these minor flaws, the game’s long-term support, multiplayer convoy mode, and modding community keep it fresh and engaging. If you enjoy simulation games with a mix of strategy and exploration, American Truck Simulator is a must-try.
While I will always prefer Euro Truck Simulator 2 to this game, it is still an absolutely fantastic trucking simulator game where as the title implies you truck across America. Well a very limited part of the United States (California, Nevada and Arizona) in the base game + free DLC, but with additional paid DLC you can truck across about half of the United States at the moment with more US states being worked on all the time. It can get quite pricey with all the state DLC ( + there is a bunch of other trailer, trucks and cosmetic DLC as well if it is something you are interested into) but it is honestly absolutely worth it given the amount attention to detail and effort that gets put into this game as the game is also still updated all the time over 8 years after release. It is not a game for everyone, but to me it is an incredibly chill time to just truck around, looking at the scenery while listening to a podcast or watching some video on the side. I would recommend playing it with wheel if possible as it makes it an even better experience. The Linux version of the game has some issues here and there, nothing game breaking, but there is definitely some stuff I wish it got fixed that has mainly to do with the default startup resolution and window positioning.
I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.
A large chunk of my family are truck drivers and i spent many summers as a boy on the road with my grandparents. It's difficult to put into words how it makes me feel. When I'm driving the Kenworth W900 i can almost smell papaws aftershave and hear nanny telling him to switch lanes or he will miss his turn. The hum of the engine and the sight of that big back hood jutting out from the windshield snapped me back into my childhood dreams of following in their footsteps. I never thought I'd like this game and I certainly never expected a video game to make me pause and reevaluate my life, but here I am. This is more than just a game to me. It's like coming home.
Great game I love it! Just like the real world! The only bad thing about ATS is that some drop off areas are a bit too small to drop a trailer in and sometimes depending where the drop off point is it can be really tight. SCS needs to work on expanding some of the drop off areas. Also please add more trucks into the game! :)

2020 - Fun at first, years ago. This game just feels old and tired every time i launch it now. Their commitment to old looking graphics, copy paste assets, invisible walls everywhere, clipping issues, forced sleep zones that don't match reality, and the idiotic, seriously idiotic AI which you are forced to always deal with, just cant get me to buy any more states. When you look forward to how much more "content" will be released I don't see hope of core gameplay improvements to make the game any more fun, that just doesn't seem to be the business model here. They have a "good enough" model. It's been almost 5 years and they only released a few states with the same bushes and trees and weeds and a lot of the same between occasional landmarks hidden from close scrutiny by invisible walls and distant viewpoints. i just don't get it. I want this game to be better, that's why I complain. ---------- 2024 - 4 years later, and I'm still so saddened by the state of this game. I suspect they give up before getting to NY, otherwise that's like 8 more years of this same old tired low res assets repeating. The fanboys of this game are really doing a dis-service to the rest of us that have also invested and are not feeling a return. Like, just have higher standards.
My game lags WAY too much after the 1.50 update. Before I never had lag. Lowered the graphics settings, Lag. Updated drivers, Lag. Been experiencing Lag with and without mods. I Lag so much that I can't complete deliveries, without rear-ending someone! I Shouldn't have these issues on a decent system. Specs, RX6900XT, 7 5800X3D, 32GB Ram
Unplayable as of the last (1.53) update. No, "unplayable" is an understatement: the game will not only crash on an hourly basis but will also completely crash and lock your system up along with it, forcing you to hard-reboot. Development oversight resulting in frequent, severe memory leaks. Devs haven't responded to numerous threads, no fix in sight... stay away from this if nothing else to keep your PC from potential damage.
I'll be totally honest, I don't know if I was promised all the States as free DLC at the time when I bought, but that is what I believed I was buying. But to us normals, it appeared to be that we were getting, you know, all of America eventually and for our initial buy in. I feel I got jerked around. The sim itself is good, and I can't knock it. It's not a triple 'A' big studio game, but its very good, the trucks feel reasonably weighty the A.I. is as stupid as any other open world driving sim, the visuals are sometimes really stunning. So the engine is fine, and thats not my gripe. My gripe is I thought I bought America, and now I find out I'm going to get micropurchased to America... If the idiots who market this stuff seriously think I (or any significant percentage of the world) are going to pay $12 for each of the remaining 45 continental states, they are out of their freakin minds... A mere $540 bucks to drive anywhere in the U.S? Guys, I can do that in my real car for less money and see the real stuff.
Every time there is an update, the game crashes on my system. Tells me game change detected. 2 months ago I stated using MODS for the first time. After the current update, it's showing the MODS are the problem. Check the MODS and they are all green showing they work. The problem are the auto saves. This is the second time after update the auto saves crash my system, and I'll have to start the game all over again. When it works, beautiful game. That's it. I'm done with this one. I'm probably the only 1 having issues with this game...
