AI Review

American Truck Simulator is a highly immersive indie simulation game that lets you experience the thrill of trucking across iconic American landscapes. With an AI Community Rating of 88.67%, players praise its realistic driving mechanics, stunning graphics, and the ability to customize and manage your own trucking empire. Whether you're delivering cargo across sunny California, sandy Nevada, or the Grand Canyon State of Arizona, the game offers a captivating journey filled with breathtaking landmarks and challenging routes. Players love the variety of cargo types, detailed truck models, and the freedom to build a successful transportation company from scratch. However, some note repetitive gameplay, occasional crashes, and AI driver behavior as areas for improvement. Despite these minor flaws, the game’s long-term support, multiplayer convoy mode, and modding community keep it fresh and engaging. If you enjoy simulation games with a mix of strategy and exploration, American Truck Simulator is a must-try.

What the community wishes

Expand drop-off areas for trailers
Some drop-off areas are too small, making it difficult to maneuver trailers. Expanding these areas would improve gameplay and reduce frustration.
Add more trucks to the game
Players are requesting more truck models to increase variety and customization options in the game.
Improve Linux version resolution issues
The Linux version has issues with default startup resolution and window positioning, which need to be fixed for a smoother experience.
Enhance AI driver behavior
AI drivers are often unrealistic and frustrating, with behaviors like sudden braking. Improving AI logic would make the game more enjoyable.
Update graphics engine for modern visuals
The game's graphics engine feels outdated. Upgrading to a more modern engine would enhance visual appeal and immersion.
Fix clipping and invisible wall issues
Clipping issues and invisible walls disrupt immersion. Addressing these would improve the overall gameplay experience.
Add more states and regions
Players want more states like Minnesota and South Dakota to explore, expanding the game's map and variety.
Improve sleep zone realism
Forced sleep zones don't match real-world trucking. Making them more realistic would enhance immersion.
Optimize game performance post-updates
Recent updates have caused lag and performance issues, even on decent systems. Optimizing performance is crucial.
Address memory leaks and crashes
Memory leaks and frequent crashes, especially after updates, make the game unplayable. Fixing these issues is a priority.
Add more realistic weather effects
Players want more dynamic and realistic weather conditions to enhance the driving experience.
Improve mod support and integration
Better mod support, especially for new players, would enhance the game's longevity and customization options.
Reduce DLC pricing for states
The cost of state DLCs is seen as too high. Lowering prices or bundling states would make the game more accessible.
Enhance multiplayer convoy features
Players enjoy convoy mode but want more features and improvements to make multiplayer even more engaging.
Add more realistic traffic patterns
Real-world traffic patterns, such as rush hours and accidents, would add depth and realism to the game.
Improve truck customization options
Players want more options to customize trucks, including interiors, exteriors, and performance upgrades.
Fix minor bugs and glitches
Minor bugs, though not game-breaking, can be annoying. Addressing these would improve the overall polish of the game.
Add more interactive roadside events
Players want more interactive events, like breakdowns or detours, to make the driving experience more dynamic.
Improve weigh station mechanics
Weigh stations feel repetitive. Adding more variety and realism to their mechanics would enhance gameplay.
Add VR support for immersive gameplay
Players are excited about VR support and want it to be fully integrated for a more immersive experience.

Positive

While I will always prefer Euro Truck Simulator 2 to this game, it is still an absolutely fantastic trucking simulator game where as the title implies you truck across America. Well a very limited part of the United States (California, Nevada and Arizona) in the base game + free DLC, but with additional paid DLC you can truck across about half of the United States at the moment with more US states being worked on all the time. It can get quite pricey with all the state DLC ( + there is a bunch of other trailer, trucks and cosmetic DLC as well if it is something you are interested into) but it is honestly absolutely worth it given the amount attention to detail and effort that gets put into this game as the game is also still updated all the time over 8 years after release. It is not a game for everyone, but to me it is an incredibly chill time to just truck around, looking at the scenery while listening to a podcast or watching some video on the side. I would recommend playing it with wheel if possible as it makes it an even better experience. The Linux version of the game has some issues here and there, nothing game breaking, but there is definitely some stuff I wish it got fixed that has mainly to do with the default startup resolution and window positioning.

  • Sentiments

    • I find this game to be an absolutely fantastic trucking simulator, offering a detailed and immersive experience of trucking across America, even if the base game covers only a limited part of the United States.
    • I appreciate the continuous updates and attention to detail in the game, which make it worth the investment despite the pricey DLCs for additional states, trucks, and cosmetics.
    • I enjoy the chill and relaxing experience of trucking around, admiring the scenery while listening to podcasts or watching videos on the side.
    • I recommend playing the game with a wheel, as it significantly enhances the overall experience and makes it even more enjoyable.
    • I acknowledge that the game may not be for everyone, as it caters to a specific audience who enjoy simulation and relaxation over action-packed gameplay.
    • I find the Linux version of the game to have some minor issues, particularly with the default startup resolution and window positioning, though these are not game-breaking.
    • I think the game can get quite expensive with all the state DLCs and additional content, which might be a barrier for some players.
    • I appreciate the effort put into expanding the game with more US states through DLCs, as it adds to the overall replayability and immersion.
    • I find the base game's limited coverage of the United States (California, Nevada, and Arizona) to be a bit restrictive, but the free DLC helps expand the experience.
    • I feel the game's longevity and continuous updates over 8 years after release demonstrate the developers' commitment to improving and maintaining the game.

Positive

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

  • Sentiments

    • I felt a sense of joy and connection when I started playing the game with my son, as it allowed us to spend quality time together after struggling to find ways to bond.
    • I was initially concerned and frustrated when my son spent 24 hours playing the game in a week, as it felt like another barrier to spending time with him.
    • I felt lost and confused when I first started playing the game, as I didn’t know what to do and had to ask my son for help.
    • I experienced a deep sense of happiness and fulfillment when playing the game with my son, as it reminded me of the fun we could have together.
    • I felt grateful for the game because it helped me reconnect with my son and brought us closer after a difficult period following my wife’s death.
    • I was pleasantly surprised by how the game not only improved our relationship at home but also encouraged us to spend time together outside the house.
    • I felt a renewed sense of hope and joy as the game reminded me that there is fun to be found in everything, even during tough times.
    • I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in taking the initiative to learn the game and join my son in something he enjoyed.
    • I felt nostalgic and emotional as the game created many happy memories for both me and my son, strengthening our bond.
    • I felt a sense of relief and satisfaction when my son helped me join his game, as it marked the beginning of our shared gaming experience.

Positive

A large chunk of my family are truck drivers and i spent many summers as a boy on the road with my grandparents. It's difficult to put into words how it makes me feel. When I'm driving the Kenworth W900 i can almost smell papaws aftershave and hear nanny telling him to switch lanes or he will miss his turn. The hum of the engine and the sight of that big back hood jutting out from the windshield snapped me back into my childhood dreams of following in their footsteps. I never thought I'd like this game and I certainly never expected a video game to make me pause and reevaluate my life, but here I am. This is more than just a game to me. It's like coming home.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel a deep emotional connection to the game because it reminds me of my childhood summers spent with my grandparents, who were truck drivers.
    • Driving the Kenworth W900 in the game evokes strong memories of my papaw, including the smell of his aftershave and the sound of my nanny's voice.
    • The game's realistic engine hum and the sight of the truck's hood bring back vivid childhood dreams of becoming a truck driver like my grandparents.
    • I never expected to enjoy this game, but it has exceeded my expectations and made me reflect on my life choices.
    • The game feels like more than just a game to me; it feels like coming home and reconnecting with my roots.
    • The game has made me pause and reevaluate my life, which is something I never anticipated from a video game.
    • I feel nostalgic and emotionally moved by the game's ability to transport me back to cherished memories of my family.
    • The game captures the essence of my childhood dreams and aspirations, making it a deeply personal experience.
    • I am surprised by how much the game resonates with me, given that I initially didn't think I would like it.
    • The game has a profound impact on me, making it a meaningful and memorable experience.

Positive

Great game I love it! Just like the real world! The only bad thing about ATS is that some drop off areas are a bit too small to drop a trailer in and sometimes depending where the drop off point is it can be really tight. SCS needs to work on expanding some of the drop off areas. Also please add more trucks into the game! :)

  • Sentiments

    • I love the game and find it to be a great experience, as it feels just like the real world.
    • I think the drop-off areas in the game are sometimes too small, making it difficult to drop a trailer in certain locations.
    • I find some drop-off points to be really tight, which can be frustrating during gameplay.
    • I believe SCS, the developers, need to work on expanding some of the drop-off areas to improve the experience.
    • I would like to see more trucks added to the game to enhance variety and enjoyment.

2020 - Fun at first, years ago. This game just feels old and tired every time i launch it now. Their commitment to old looking graphics, copy paste assets, invisible walls everywhere, clipping issues, forced sleep zones that don't match reality, and the idiotic, seriously idiotic AI which you are forced to always deal with, just cant get me to buy any more states. When you look forward to how much more "content" will be released I don't see hope of core gameplay improvements to make the game any more fun, that just doesn't seem to be the business model here. They have a "good enough" model. It's been almost 5 years and they only released a few states with the same bushes and trees and weeds and a lot of the same between occasional landmarks hidden from close scrutiny by invisible walls and distant viewpoints. i just don't get it. I want this game to be better, that's why I complain. ---------- 2024 - 4 years later, and I'm still so saddened by the state of this game. I suspect they give up before getting to NY, otherwise that's like 8 more years of this same old tired low res assets repeating. The fanboys of this game are really doing a dis-service to the rest of us that have also invested and are not feeling a return. Like, just have higher standards.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game was fun at first, but over time it has become old and tired, making it less enjoyable to play.
    • I am frustrated with the game's commitment to outdated graphics and the repeated use of copy-paste assets, which makes the experience feel stale.
    • I find the invisible walls and clipping issues in the game to be highly annoying and immersion-breaking.
    • I am disappointed with the forced sleep zones that don't align with reality, which feels like a poor design choice.
    • I am extremely frustrated with the idiotic AI that I am forced to deal with, as it ruins the gameplay experience.
    • I feel hopeless about the future of the game, as I don't see any core gameplay improvements being made to make it more fun.
    • I am dissatisfied with the 'good enough' business model of the game, as it doesn't strive for meaningful improvements.
    • I am disappointed that after almost 5 years, the game has only released a few states with repetitive assets and little innovation.
    • I feel saddened by the state of the game even 4 years later, as it still lacks meaningful progress or improvements.
    • I believe the fanboys of the game are doing a disservice by not holding the developers to higher standards, which affects the overall quality.

Negative

My game lags WAY too much after the 1.50 update. Before I never had lag. Lowered the graphics settings, Lag. Updated drivers, Lag. Been experiencing Lag with and without mods. I Lag so much that I can't complete deliveries, without rear-ending someone! I Shouldn't have these issues on a decent system. Specs, RX6900XT, 7 5800X3D, 32GB Ram

  • Sentiments

    • I am extremely frustrated with the excessive lag in the game after the 1.50 update, which was not present before.
    • I have tried lowering the graphics settings to reduce lag, but it did not help at all.
    • I updated my drivers in an attempt to fix the lag, but the issue persists.
    • I experience lag both with and without mods, which makes the game unplayable.
    • The lag is so severe that I cannot complete deliveries without rear-ending someone, which is highly frustrating.
    • I believe I should not have these issues on a decent system like mine, which adds to my frustration.
    • I provided my system specs (RX6900XT, 7 5800X3D, 32GB Ram) to emphasize that my hardware should handle the game without issues.

Negative

Unplayable as of the last (1.53) update. No, "unplayable" is an understatement: the game will not only crash on an hourly basis but will also completely crash and lock your system up along with it, forcing you to hard-reboot. Development oversight resulting in frequent, severe memory leaks. Devs haven't responded to numerous threads, no fix in sight... stay away from this if nothing else to keep your PC from potential damage.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game completely unplayable after the latest update (1.53), as it crashes frequently and locks up my entire system, requiring a hard reboot.
    • I am frustrated by the severe memory leaks caused by what I perceive as a development oversight, which significantly impacts the game's performance.
    • I am disappointed that the developers have not responded to numerous threads addressing these issues, leaving no fix in sight.
    • I strongly advise others to stay away from this game to avoid potential damage to their PC due to its unstable state.
    • I feel that the term 'unplayable' is an understatement, as the game's issues go beyond mere crashes and affect the entire system.

Negative

I'll be totally honest, I don't know if I was promised all the States as free DLC at the time when I bought, but that is what I believed I was buying. But to us normals, it appeared to be that we were getting, you know, all of America eventually and for our initial buy in. I feel I got jerked around. The sim itself is good, and I can't knock it. It's not a triple 'A' big studio game, but its very good, the trucks feel reasonably weighty the A.I. is as stupid as any other open world driving sim, the visuals are sometimes really stunning. So the engine is fine, and thats not my gripe. My gripe is I thought I bought America, and now I find out I'm going to get micropurchased to America... If the idiots who market this stuff seriously think I (or any significant percentage of the world) are going to pay $12 for each of the remaining 45 continental states, they are out of their freakin minds... A mere $540 bucks to drive anywhere in the U.S? Guys, I can do that in my real car for less money and see the real stuff.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel misled because I believed I was buying a game that included all of America as free DLC, but now it seems like I will have to pay for additional states.
    • The simulation itself is good, and I can't criticize it. It's not a triple-A big studio game, but it's very good.
    • The trucks feel reasonably weighty, which adds to the realism of the game.
    • The A.I. is as stupid as any other open-world driving sim, which is a common issue in this genre.
    • The visuals are sometimes really stunning, which enhances the overall experience.
    • I feel like I got jerked around because I thought I was buying America, but now I find out I have to pay for additional states.
    • I think the idea of paying $12 for each of the remaining 45 continental states is ridiculous and unrealistic.
    • The total cost of $540 to drive anywhere in the U.S. in the game is absurd, especially when I can do that in real life for less money.
    • The game engine is fine, and that's not my main issue with the game.
    • I believe the marketing team is out of their minds if they think people will pay such high prices for additional content.

Negative

Every time there is an update, the game crashes on my system. Tells me game change detected. 2 months ago I stated using MODS for the first time. After the current update, it's showing the MODS are the problem. Check the MODS and they are all green showing they work. The problem are the auto saves. This is the second time after update the auto saves crash my system, and I'll have to start the game all over again. When it works, beautiful game. That's it. I'm done with this one. I'm probably the only 1 having issues with this game...

  • Sentiments

    • Every time there is an update, the game crashes on my system, which is extremely frustrating and disruptive to my gameplay experience.
    • The game frequently shows a 'game change detected' message, which feels unnecessary and adds to the frustration.
    • I started using MODS for the first time 2 months ago, and now the game is blaming the MODS for the crashes, even though they are all marked as working.
    • The auto saves are causing my system to crash after updates, forcing me to start the game all over again, which is incredibly annoying.
    • When the game works, it is a beautiful and enjoyable experience, which makes the technical issues even more disappointing.
    • I feel like I might be the only one experiencing these issues, which adds to my frustration and sense of isolation.
    • I am done with this game because of the persistent technical problems, which have ruined my overall experience.
