What the community wishes

Fix Ubisoft Connect authentication issues
Players face frequent authentication errors with Ubisoft Connect, preventing them from launching the game despite owning it on Steam. This issue is widespread and needs immediate resolution to improve user experience.
Simplify account creation process
The account creation process is overly complicated, with repeated captcha failures and unclear error messages. Streamlining this process would reduce frustration and improve accessibility.
Remove mandatory Ubisoft account requirement
Players are frustrated by the mandatory Ubisoft account requirement, especially for single-player modes. Allowing offline play without Ubisoft Connect would enhance accessibility and user satisfaction.
Improve Ubisoft Connect integration with Steam
The integration between Ubisoft Connect and Steam is problematic, often requiring activation codes or causing ownership verification errors. Better integration would reduce friction for players.
Enable offline play for single-player mode
Players cannot access the game without an internet connection, even for single-player mode. Adding offline play functionality would make the game more accessible, especially for travelers.
Reduce reliance on Ubisoft Connect
Players find Ubisoft Connect unnecessary and frustrating, especially when it fails to launch the game. Reducing reliance on the launcher or improving its stability would enhance the user experience.
Fix activation code errors
Players encounter activation code errors despite owning the game on Steam. Resolving these errors would prevent unnecessary frustration and improve accessibility.
Improve multiplayer invite system
The game blocks Steam multiplayer invites, forcing players to use Ubisoft Connect. Simplifying the multiplayer invite system would make co-op play more accessible and enjoyable.
Address AI cheating in gameplay
AI opponents do not follow the same rules as players, making trade and combat mechanics feel unfair. Balancing AI behavior would improve the competitive aspect of the game.
Reduce DLC paywall
The high cost of DLCs creates a significant paywall, limiting access to the full game experience. Offering more affordable or bundled DLC options would improve player satisfaction.
Improve tutorial and onboarding
The tutorial system is insufficient, leaving new players confused. Adding more comprehensive tutorials or beginner guides would help players understand the game mechanics better.
Fix Ubisoft Connect crashes
Ubisoft Connect frequently crashes, leading to error messages and game instability. Improving the launcher's stability would prevent these issues and enhance the overall experience.
Enable Steam-only multiplayer
Players are forced to use Ubisoft Connect for multiplayer, which adds unnecessary complexity. Allowing Steam-only multiplayer would simplify the process and improve user experience.
Improve account linking process
The account linking process between Steam and Ubisoft is unreliable, often leading to errors and lockouts. Streamlining this process would reduce frustration and improve accessibility.
Add more sandbox customization options
While sandbox mode is praised, players want more customization options to enhance creativity. Expanding sandbox features would increase replayability and player satisfaction.
Fix patch-related activation issues
Patches sometimes lock players out of the game, requiring activation codes. Ensuring patches do not disrupt gameplay would improve the user experience.
Improve AI trade mechanics
Trade mechanics with AI feel pointless, as they do not follow the same rules as players. Revising AI trade behavior would make the system more engaging and fair.
Reduce game launch time
Ubisoft Connect takes longer to load than the game itself, causing frustration. Optimizing the launcher's performance would improve the overall experience.
Add more land-based combat options
The game lacks land-based combat, limiting strategic options. Adding land invasions or other combat mechanics would enhance gameplay variety.
Improve Ubisoft Support responsiveness
Ubisoft Support is often unresponsive or unhelpful, leaving players stranded with issues. Improving support quality and responsiveness would enhance player trust and satisfaction.

In-depth analysis of most impactful community reviews

Positive

For the players of previous Anno titles: go for it, this is the 3.0 version of all the others. Love it. You can see and feel this game was made with love, a rarity these days I think. Newbies: not a city builder, but a supply chain game.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that this game is a significant improvement over previous Anno titles, as it feels like a refined 3.0 version of the series.
    • I love how this game was clearly made with a lot of care and passion, which is something I find rare in modern games.
    • I think new players should be aware that this is not a traditional city builder but rather a supply chain game, which might not appeal to everyone.

Positive

the game itself is fun and i honestly like it a lot HOWEVER if it were published under any other publisher it would be 10000000000 times better every single time i attempt to launch the game i have to spend so much time trying to troubleshoot the ubisoft connect launcher because it is complete and utter garbage i dont understand how they have managed to botch what used to be uplay even further but jesus christ just attempting to get into the game is genuinely the worst experiences i have ever had maybe this is just the experience ubisoft intended though: have a publisher sale where genuinely good games such as this are on sale, force players to install your absolutely terrible launcher because wahwah DRM!!!!!, game never launches, player gets screwed out of money they thought they were able to find value in thanks ubisoft

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game itself to be fun and genuinely enjoy it a lot.
    • I believe the game would be significantly better if it were published under any other publisher.
    • I experience frustration every time I attempt to launch the game due to issues with the Ubisoft Connect launcher.
    • I consider the Ubisoft Connect launcher to be complete and utter garbage.
    • I am baffled by how Ubisoft managed to make the launcher worse than its predecessor, Uplay.
    • I find the process of attempting to get into the game to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had.
    • I suspect that Ubisoft intentionally creates a poor experience by forcing players to use their terrible launcher for DRM purposes.
    • I feel that players are being screwed out of their money due to the launcher issues, despite finding value in the game itself.
    • I appreciate that genuinely good games, like this one, are often on sale through Ubisoft.
    • I am frustrated with Ubisoft for prioritizing DRM over a smooth user experience.

Positive

The game is very fun once you actually get to play it. My wife and I each bought it to play together. Let me save the approx. 40-50 minutes it took us to get started. 1. You (and your friends) will need an Ubisoft Connect account to play. Ideally sign up for this first on your browser. 2. If you are playing with friends, once you have created your accounts, add them via the browser page. Click on your account at the top right of the page and navigate to friends, and "add friend". 3. Go into your steam library to launch the game. You will likely hit a screen where you need an "activation code". If you google this, it will tell you to find a "cd key" option in the steam menu for the game, you likely won't. In this case, simply close the activation key screen as well as steam. Reopen steam, try to launch again, and it should just run without asking again for the key. 4. Once you go to play a game with a friend, you will be tempted to add them to game through their steam ID (this is an option). It will likely NOT work. Instead, add your friend to game via their Ubisoft account which should also show. If their Ubisoft account is not showing, one of you likely has an issue with the Ubisoft connect app and will need to reset it first. 5. Before playing with friends, I recommend you try the first 2 campaign missions. The tutorial system won't be great, so I also recommend watching a youtube video by RepublicOfPlay titled "The Essential Guide to Anno 1800 - Anno 1800 Beginner Guide". This will get you up to speed so you aren't so confused. Now you should be in good shape to play! We are still quite early in the game but the graphics are nice and the game requires some thinking, but not in an overly taxing 400 clicks per minute way. Overall we are having a good time. Enjoy.

  • Sentiments

    • The game is very fun once you actually get to play it, and my wife and I are having a good time playing together.
    • The process of setting up the game, including creating Ubisoft Connect accounts and adding friends, took approximately 40-50 minutes, which felt unnecessarily long and frustrating.
    • The graphics of the game are nice, which adds to the overall enjoyment of the experience.
    • The game requires some thinking, but it is not overly taxing, which makes it enjoyable without being overwhelming.
    • The tutorial system is not great, and I found it necessary to watch a YouTube guide to understand the game mechanics better.
    • Adding friends via Steam ID did not work, and we had to use Ubisoft accounts instead, which was a bit inconvenient.
    • The activation code issue during the launch was confusing, but closing and reopening Steam resolved it without needing the key.
    • I recommend trying the first two campaign missions before playing with friends to get a better grasp of the game.
    • The game is enjoyable overall, and we are having a good time despite the initial setup challenges.
    • The game's complexity is balanced well, making it engaging without requiring excessive effort or clicks.

Positive

Great game the only thing that ruins it is that awful ubisoft launcher, can't seem to play the game any more on day 2. Says another account of mine owns the game (likely when I used to play it on game pass but now own it on steam). Then I sign in to the account it suggests and wants an activation code that I don't have on steam. Urg Ubisoft you are killing your games with these silly launchers!

  • Sentiments

    • I think the game itself is great and enjoyable, which is a positive aspect of the experience.
    • I find the Ubisoft launcher to be awful and frustrating, which significantly detracts from the overall experience.
    • I am unable to play the game on the second day due to issues with the launcher, which is highly disappointing.
    • I am confused and annoyed by the launcher claiming another account owns the game, likely due to a previous Game Pass subscription.
    • I am frustrated by the launcher asking for an activation code that I do not have, as I purchased the game on Steam.
    • I believe Ubisoft is harming their games by implementing these unnecessary and problematic launchers.

Positive

I finally reach 1000+ hours playing, and it's not hard to guess that this game is really be my comfort game. I didn't expect much when I bought this but I can say it is worth it. While I'm not really play many games of similar genre before, this one is by far the best I've played. Recommended.

  • Sentiments

    • I have reached over 1000 hours of playtime, which shows how much I enjoy and value this game.
    • This game has become my comfort game, providing me with a sense of relaxation and enjoyment.
    • I didn't have high expectations when I bought the game, but it has exceeded my initial thoughts.
    • I find the game to be worth the purchase, as it has provided significant value and enjoyment.
    • Although I haven't played many games in this genre before, this one stands out as the best I've experienced.
    • I highly recommend this game to others based on my positive experience with it.

Negative

It takes longer to load ubisoft connect than to get to the main menu of the actual game that you purchased. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game (says it on my game time of review), but having to log in to another server just to play a game on steam is just silly. Also, I mostly play single player, so if I ever travel and don't have internet, I can't even load the game. So only get this if its in a heavy discount, don't pay full price.

  • Sentiments

    • I find it frustrating that Ubisoft Connect takes longer to load than the actual game's main menu, which feels unnecessary and inconvenient.
    • I enjoyed the game itself, as evidenced by my significant playtime, which shows I had a positive experience with the core gameplay.
    • I feel it is silly to have to log in to another server just to play a game on Steam, which adds unnecessary steps and frustration.
    • I am disappointed that I cannot play the game offline, especially since I mostly play single-player and may not always have internet access.
    • I recommend only purchasing the game at a heavy discount, as I do not believe it is worth paying full price given the issues I encountered.

Negative

>Buy game on steam >Launch thru steam >Ubisoft launcher tells me the copy isn't authentic. Thank you Ubisoft, very cool!

  • Sentiments

    • I purchased the game on Steam, expecting a smooth experience, but encountered an issue with the Ubisoft launcher.
    • I launched the game through Steam, but the Ubisoft launcher flagged my copy as inauthentic, which was frustrating.
    • I felt annoyed and disappointed when the Ubisoft launcher claimed my game copy wasn't authentic despite purchasing it legitimately.
    • I sarcastically thanked Ubisoft for the inconvenience, highlighting my dissatisfaction with the situation.

Negative

Try to launch game. Need ubisoft account. Try to create account. Try to do captcha on tiny dialog box which can't be resized. (steam integration?) Captcha fails even though everything is right. Finally get it right. Click Create Account. Page refreshes and captcha again??? (account API call 500) Give up and use browser. Same thing on Firefox. Same thing on Chrome. Tried to log in with XBOX. Guess what? It just links your account, you still have to create account. (not SSO) Try again, now simply says "account creation failed" Easy refund, not touching any ubisoft game ever again. I heard bad reputation for their newer games but they can't even get something as simple as account creation flow working properly. What a gigantic joke.

  • Sentiments

    • I tried to launch the game but was immediately frustrated by the requirement to create a Ubisoft account, which felt unnecessary and inconvenient.
    • I struggled with the captcha on a tiny, non-resizable dialog box, which made the process unnecessarily difficult and frustrating.
    • The captcha failed multiple times even though I entered everything correctly, adding to my frustration and wasting my time.
    • After finally getting the captcha right, the page refreshed and asked for the captcha again, which felt like a broken and poorly designed system.
    • I tried using different browsers like Firefox and Chrome, but the same issues persisted, making me feel like the problem was systemic and not just a one-time error.
    • I attempted to log in with my XBOX account, only to find out it didn't support single sign-on and still required me to create a Ubisoft account, which was disappointing.
    • After multiple attempts, the account creation simply failed without any clear reason, leaving me feeling completely defeated and annoyed.
    • I decided to refund the game and vowed never to touch a Ubisoft game again, as this experience was overwhelmingly negative and frustrating.
    • I had heard about Ubisoft's bad reputation for their newer games, but this experience confirmed my worst expectations, making me lose trust in their products.
    • The entire account creation process felt like a gigantic joke, as something so simple was made unnecessarily complicated and broken.

Negative

Game itself is 5/5, but Ubisoft does everything in their power to make trying to run the game a pain in the ass. Everything other game on Steam, you buy, download, click play, and the game starts. Not Anno1800. I had to rename config files, download some bs Ubisoft launcher, and create a Ubisoft account. It still doesn't start properly sometimes. Screw Ubisoft. Good game though.

  • Sentiments

    • I think the game itself is excellent and deserves a perfect score of 5/5.
    • I find Ubisoft's approach to running the game extremely frustrating and inconvenient.
    • I dislike having to rename config files just to get the game to work properly.
    • I am annoyed by the requirement to download and use the Ubisoft launcher.
    • I find it bothersome to create a Ubisoft account just to play the game.
    • I am frustrated that the game sometimes still doesn't start properly despite all the effort.
    • I have a strong negative opinion about Ubisoft due to these issues.
    • I acknowledge that the game itself is good despite the technical issues.

Negative

Ok here's what will happen to this game if you lose access to the Ubisoft account; When launching Ubisoft will ask you for an activation key. You don't have one since you bought on steam. Trying to create a new Ubisoft account and launching in steam gives an "activation error" on launching. Basically this is entirely launched via the Ubisoft games launcher even if you buy on Steam. Unlike steam you probably don't use Ubisoft for much so when you inevitably forget the log in details you'll be locked out even though you own the game on steam.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel frustrated that the game requires an Ubisoft account to play, even when purchased on Steam, as it adds unnecessary complexity.
    • I am concerned that losing access to my Ubisoft account will lock me out of the game, despite owning it on Steam.
    • I find it inconvenient that the game launches through the Ubisoft launcher instead of directly through Steam.
    • I am annoyed that creating a new Ubisoft account does not resolve the activation error, making it seem like a flawed system.
    • I feel disappointed that the game's accessibility is tied to a third-party account I rarely use, which increases the risk of losing access.
    • I think it's problematic that the game's ownership on Steam doesn't guarantee access without additional account dependencies.
    • I find the activation error message confusing and unhelpful, as it doesn't provide a clear solution to the problem.
    • I feel that the reliance on the Ubisoft launcher undermines the convenience of purchasing the game on Steam.
    • I am worried about the potential for being locked out of the game due to forgotten Ubisoft account details, despite owning it legitimately.
    • I believe the game's dependency on Ubisoft's system creates unnecessary barriers for players who prefer Steam.
