I've barely scratched the surface of this thing, but I was quickly able to get acquainted enough to make animated art for a little game I'm working on. Super straightforward and user friendly, just needed a few Google searches once in a while. I especially like that the raw aseprite files are very small, so storing them in version control is no big deal! We're talking < 1 kb of data for most of what I've needed so far! Can't wait to experiment more!
I have many, many years of experience with Photoshop and using Photoshop for pixelart. Within a day or two I was already more productive and having more fun with Aseprite for pixelart creation than I ever was with Photoshop. Aseprite is simply THE tool for the task.
So, it looks like I have a lot of hours, but a large part of is just that i leave it open. Still, a fair few bit is genuine use. It's really the gold standard for pixelart animation. Through the thousands of hours, i've found use for pretty much every tool. All super useful, and a bunch of plugins available too. If the 20$ pricetag is a bit too much, check out graphicsgale, but you really don't need anything other than this. It's great. Also has constant updates, most of which are useful.
I'm here to buy dev a coffee. Spent 200+ hrs taking a bite: it's powerful and light enough [b]AND OPEN-SOURCED[/b] (let's not talk about the royal pain in compilation). A handy army knife which helps you directly dive into the world of pixel art without any bloating issues - launch and paint whenever you want (also possible to shoehorn it into your unity/godot workflows).
From the perspective of a game developer, Aseprite for pixel art is essential for a few reasons. - It is lightweight and has almost no overhead, unlike full-featured programs like photoshop. You can switch between creating art and developing almost instantly. - It is highly customizable, with extremely good hotkey options. Saves me a ton of time. - It has incredible animation and layer systems. - It has been around for a long time, so everything is well documented in any form you need to learn If you are a game developer making pixel art, this program can save you hours every week if you customize it to your workflow. Absolutely worth every dollar!
Currently Aseprite can't handle mice with high polling rates (8000Hz or 4000Hz). I had to compile about 10 versions of Aseprite to find the issue, but it was introduced in version v1.3.8. v1.3.8 added a fix for tablets and stylus devices which sets the cursor position each time your stylus gets moved. This was done to make it work when streaming with OBS. The issue with the way it got implemented is that it now gets executed 8000 or 4000 each second depending on your mouse polling rate. The code can't keep up and then significantly reduces the cursor speed (about 2x slower). The workaround for this now is to toggle the following option off: Edit -> Preferences -> Tablet -> Windows 8/10 Pointer API (Windows Ink) -> Unselect "Set cursor position from stylus location"
Aseprite need a major overall with there front windows options!!! I can not for my life read the options in order to save or even use it! Hey, dev who made Aseprite If you see this and say you'll fix this icon front problem. my screen is 4K and it would be nice to read it! Make a patch because i cannot recommend Aseprite from steam or github without the options windows get bigger and better Icon!!! if somebody knows how to make those option bigger please teach me!
i regret buying this. it feels like an very poorly made version of paint. net, maybe because i used it too much regardless, if you are used to a certain program for pixel art, please stick with it, its not really worth spending your money on something you cant use...
I love how this program works and it's tools. HOWEVER I was getting major lag on the UI, brushes and tools. I use a Huion Kamvas 16 and the pen was lagging to use in the program, but mouse worked fine. But I'm not using my mouse when I have a £300-£500 piece of equipment intended for art. Had to refund cause no fixes I saw online were working. Edit: Will be trying again as I redownloaded the trial and potentially found a fix that worked there. If It works when I rebuy it I will change my review.
Very overrated better off using a free pixel art programm features like rotating or moving an image break the image and when rotating an image it dosent even have gridsnapping like Hammer (source engine) has.
