AI Review

Step into the shadows of Gotham with *Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition*, a critically acclaimed action-adventure game that lets you experience the thrill of being the Dark Knight. With an AI Community Rating of 88.16%, this remastered edition offers a gripping story, immersive atmosphere, and iconic villains like The Joker, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc. The FreeFlow™ combat system delivers brutal melee brawls, while detective tools like x-ray scanning and pheromone tracking let you solve intricate puzzles. Explore the gritty, open-world environment of Arkham Asylum, using gadgets like Batarangs and the Batclaw to navigate and take down enemies. However, some players note repetitive boss fights, clunky combat compared to sequels, and monotonous Riddler trophies. Despite these flaws, the game’s stunning graphics, engaging stealth mechanics, and intense action make it a must-play for Batman fans and newcomers alike.

What the community wishes

Boss fights are repetitive
Boss fights, especially Titan battles and Poison Ivy, feel repetitive and lack variety. The Titan Joker fight is particularly underwhelming and could benefit from more creative mechanics and unique challenges.
Combat feels clunky compared to sequels
The combat system, while groundbreaking at release, feels clunky when compared to later entries in the series. Improvements in fluidity and responsiveness would enhance the experience for players revisiting the game.
Riddler trophies are monotonous
The Riddler trophies are scattered without much thought, making collection feel like a chore. Better placement and more engaging puzzles could improve this aspect of the game.
Stealth mechanics need refinement
Stealth mechanics, while decent, lack the depth and versatility seen in later games. Expanding enemy AI and scenario design would make stealth sections more engaging.
Input drops in combat challenges
Input drops during combat challenges can frustrate players. Improving input recognition and consistency would enhance the combat experience.
Camera control issues during platforming
Camera control during platforming, jumping, and climbing can be difficult to manage, especially in tight spaces. Better camera mechanics would improve navigation and reduce frustration.
Last boss fight is underwhelming
The final boss fight with Joker feels anticlimactic and lacks the intensity expected from a finale. A more challenging and dynamic encounter would leave a stronger impression.
Flashing transitions in detective mode
The flashing transitions when switching to detective mode can be disorienting. A mod to remove this effect is recommended, but an in-game option would be a better solution.
Save file corruption issues
Some players report save file corruption, leading to unplayable states. Addressing this issue would prevent frustration and ensure a smoother experience.
Key binding and file access problems
Players encounter issues with key binding changes and blocked file access. Simplifying these processes would improve accessibility and customization options.
Gameplay feels short
The main story feels short, leaving players wanting more content. Expanding the campaign or adding more side missions could address this.
Lack of enemy variety
Enemy types are limited, making combat encounters feel repetitive over time. Introducing more enemy variants would keep combat fresh and engaging.
Grind for collectibles feels excessive
The grind for collectibles, such as Riddler trophies, feels excessive and detracts from the overall experience. Reducing the number or making them more rewarding would help.
Graphics could use modern updates
While the graphics hold up well, modern updates or remastering with current visual standards would enhance the game's appeal to new players.
Difficulty spikes in boss fights
Some boss fights have sudden difficulty spikes, making them feel unbalanced. Adjusting difficulty curves would provide a more consistent challenge.
Lack of meaningful character arcs
Character arcs feel shallow, especially compared to later games. Deeper development for key characters would enrich the story and player engagement.
Limited gadget versatility
Gadgets feel limited in their use and versatility. Expanding their functionality and integrating them more creatively into gameplay would add depth.
Repetitive stealth encounters
Stealth encounters can feel repetitive due to similar enemy behaviors and scenarios. Introducing more varied stealth mechanics and enemy AI would improve this aspect.
FPS cap limits performance
The 62 FPS cap limits performance on modern systems. Allowing players to adjust this setting in-game would improve the experience for high-refresh-rate monitors.
Labyrinth challenges are frustrating
Labyrinth challenges, such as jumping and climbing sections, can be frustrating due to poor camera control and mechanics. Refining these sections would improve overall gameplay.
Did you know Batman AA is already remastered? By fans.

Rating: 8.5/10
It's a solid game, especially if you are a fan of hand to hand combat similar to Sleeping Dogs, Mad Max, Middle Earth, etc. Graphics are good for the year of release. And Joker didn't disappoint at all. The whole game takes place in Arkham Asylum island... like a mini-open world game where the mad man tries to stop you from stopping him by using his very creative ideas lol. But before you play it, make sure to remaster the game using the following 2 guides:

Texture Pack
Cutscene Remaster
All you have to do is install Asylum Reborn and AsylumHD Texture Packs using a very simple and easy tool TFC Installer. Then unload Advance Launcher exe and Remastered Cutscenes into the game directory. Make sure to disable PhysX for higher FPS. Then you can enjoy the game.

  • Sentiments

    • I think the game is solid, especially for fans of hand-to-hand combat games like Sleeping Dogs, Mad Max, and Middle Earth.
    • I find the graphics to be good for the year of release, which adds to the overall enjoyment of the game.
    • I appreciate that the Joker character did not disappoint and added a lot of creativity to the game's storyline.
    • I like the mini-open world design of Arkham Asylum island, which makes the game feel immersive and engaging.
    • I recommend remastering the game using the provided guides to enhance the experience, which shows the game has room for improvement.
    • I find the process of installing the Asylum Reborn and AsylumHD Texture Packs using the TFC Installer to be simple and easy.
    • I suggest disabling PhysX for higher FPS, which indicates some technical limitations in the original game.
    • I believe the remastered cutscenes and texture packs significantly improve the game's visual quality.
    • I think the game's setting and the mad man's creative attempts to stop you add a unique and enjoyable challenge.
    • I feel the game is worth playing, especially after applying the recommended remastering steps.

Negative

i would give this game a good review but it seems that my savefile is now broken and unplayable locking me in a small room which you cant escape even a restart to the checkpoint doesnt work i never expected to see this in a game like this

  • Sentiments

    • I would give this game a good review, indicating that I initially had a positive impression of the game.
    • My savefile is now broken and unplayable, which is extremely frustrating and disappointing.
    • I am locked in a small room with no way to escape, which feels like a major design flaw.
    • Even restarting to the checkpoint doesn't work, which adds to my frustration and sense of helplessness.
    • I never expected to encounter such a severe issue in a game like this, which has lowered my overall opinion of it.

Negative

Unpopular opinion here but while the game does do things well I didn't care for it much because: -The entire game is in shades of dark grey and it gets really grading over time to see almost no color -Most of the combat can be done just by repeatedly left clicking and pointing your mouse vaguely in the right direction. (this isn't an issue with how hard the game was if I wanted it to be harder I would have turned up the difficulty more with the lack of depth which is especially annoying as the game is pretty long). -A decent portion of the game is just walking from point A to point B through areas you've already seen (this includes the detective mode gimmick which the game just kinda drops halfway through). -The stealth sections of the game were by far my favorite part, but there weren't nearly enough -The story is pretty boring and there's also a couple sections where the story makes you (as batman) make really dumb decisions -Finally not really a knock against the game itself but if you're thinking of buying this in 2024 keep in mind it came out in 2009 and while its aged pretty well it still definitly feels like an older game In conclusion there's a ton of good here that you can read about in basically every other review of this game however I wouldn't put it in a category with games like Portal where no matter what genres you typically play and no matter how old the game is you'll still enjoy it. So if the things I just listed sound like they would be a big deal for you I would probably go find another game.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the game's visual design to be monotonous and tiring due to its heavy use of dark grey shades, which made the experience less enjoyable over time.
    • The combat system felt shallow and repetitive, as it mostly required left-clicking and pointing the mouse in the right direction, lacking depth despite the game's length.
    • A significant portion of the game involved repetitive traversal through familiar areas, which felt tedious and uninspired.
    • The detective mode gimmick, which initially seemed interesting, was abandoned halfway through the game, making it feel underutilized.
    • I thoroughly enjoyed the stealth sections of the game, but they were too few in number, leaving me wanting more of that gameplay style.
    • The story was unengaging and, at times, forced Batman to make decisions that felt out of character and poorly thought out.
    • While the game has aged well since its 2009 release, it still feels like an older game, which might be a consideration for players in 2024.
    • Despite its flaws, the game has many good qualities that are widely praised in other reviews, though it doesn't reach the timeless appeal of games like Portal.
    • If the issues I mentioned, such as repetitive combat and traversal, are deal-breakers for you, I would recommend looking for a different game.

Negative

Batman is a self-righteous coward and that's what makes this game so tedious. He thinks that by not killing criminals, he doesn't stoop to their level. And he wonders why the baddies keep getting back up even though he puts them down over and over again for the past 80 years. He is a thin and empty shell of a muscle bound caricature who can't grow up and past the deaths of his parents and seeks vengeance on even those who have nothing to do with his broken childhood. He expects the law to bend to his will, and the police to obey his every whim and want, even when their lives are at stake. Batman is a wimp who hides behind his mask because he is a child who doesn't dare to face the world and fight its wrongs with confidence. As I've always said:
If Jackie Estacado were Batman, there would be no crime in Gotham City.
• Sentiments

    • I find Batman to be a self-righteous coward, which makes the game tedious and unenjoyable.
    • I believe Batman's refusal to kill criminals is hypocritical and ineffective, as it allows them to keep returning.
    • I think Batman is a thin and empty shell of a character, lacking depth and growth.
    • I feel Batman is stuck in his past, unable to move beyond the trauma of his parents' deaths.
    • I see Batman as someone who expects the law and police to cater to his whims, which feels unrealistic and frustrating.
    • I consider Batman a wimp who hides behind his mask, avoiding facing the world with confidence.
    • I find Batman's character to be a caricature, lacking the complexity needed to make the game engaging.
    • I believe the game would be better if Batman were more like Jackie Estacado, who would eliminate crime effectively.
    • I think the game's portrayal of Batman as a child unable to grow up diminishes its appeal.
    • I feel the game's narrative fails to make Batman's motivations compelling or relatable.

Negative

    • I am upset because the game's issues prevent me from enjoying it as intended.

Negative

the most overrated pile of dogshit i've ever played. the amount of people hyping this game up makes me feel literally insane because there's no chance everybody is talking about the same game as me. the only decently fun parts were the scarecrow sections and the bane fight but even those were so tedious and janky that it was barely enjoyable. truly ass.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that this game is the most overrated pile of dogshit I've ever played, which makes me extremely frustrated and disappointed.
    • I feel insane because the amount of people hyping this game up doesn't align with my experience, making me question if we're even talking about the same game.
    • I found the scarecrow sections to be decently fun, which provided a brief moment of enjoyment amidst my overall dissatisfaction.
    • I thought the Bane fight was somewhat enjoyable, but even that was marred by tedious and janky mechanics.
    • I found the scarecrow sections and Bane fight to be tedious and janky, which significantly reduced my enjoyment of those parts.
    • I feel that the game is truly ass, which sums up my overwhelmingly negative opinion of it.
