Batman: Arkham City GOTY is a critically acclaimed action-adventure game that immerses players in the dark, gritty streets of Gotham City. With an AI Community Rating of 88.16%, this Game of the Year Edition includes all DLC, offering seven new maps, three playable characters (Catwoman, Robin, and Nightwing), and 12 unique skins. The game builds on the success of Arkham Asylum, expanding the world fivefold and introducing a Rogues Gallery of iconic villains like The Joker, Harley Quinn, and Mr. Freeze. Players praise its immersive story, fluid combat, and stunning graphics, making it a must-play for Batman fans. However, some community feedback highlights areas for improvement, such as the excessive Riddler trophies, repetitive challenges, and occasional glitches. Despite these minor flaws, the game delivers a thrilling experience, blending stealth, exploration, and intense combat. If you enjoy action-packed adventures with deep storytelling, Batman: Arkham City GOTY is a standout choice.

What the community wishes

Reduce Riddler Trophies Count
The Riddler trophies are excessive, with over 400 being too much. Reducing the number would make collecting them less tedious and more enjoyable.
Improve Side Quest Depth
Side quests feel like an afterthought and lack depth. Expanding and making them more engaging would enhance the overall experience.
Streamline Combat Takedowns
Combat takedowns can feel clunky and are sometimes interrupted. Smoothing out these mechanics would improve combat fluidity.
Fix Minor Bugs and Glitches
Minor bugs and glitches cause occasional freezes or crashes. Addressing these issues would improve stability and user experience.
Enhance Character Switching Mechanics
Switching characters can disrupt gameplay due to differing combat styles. Better integration of character-specific mechanics would reduce confusion.
Expand Ending Cutscene
The ending feels abrupt and could benefit from a longer, more detailed cutscene to better tie the story together.
Reduce Challenge Repetitiveness
Challenges, especially Riddler's Revenge, are repetitive and monotonous. Reducing their number or increasing variety would improve engagement.
Improve Fast Travel System
The open world can feel tedious to traverse. A more efficient fast-travel system would help maintain pacing without disrupting immersion.
Balance Combat Difficulty
Combat challenges are too easy, while predator challenges can be frustrating. Balancing difficulty across all challenges would improve consistency.
Add More Enemy Variety
While there are more enemy types, further variety in enemy behavior and design would enhance combat diversity.
Improve Cinematic Resolution
Cinematics are not high resolution, which detracts from the visual experience. Upgrading these would align them with the game's overall quality.
Expand DLC Content
DLC content like Harley Quinn's Revenge is short. Expanding DLCs with more substantial content would increase replay value.
Refine Stealth Mechanics
Stealth missions can be frustrating due to variability in enemy behavior. Refining these mechanics would make them more enjoyable.
Reduce Collectible Overload
There are too many collectibles, which feels overwhelming. Reducing their number or making them more meaningful would improve the experience.
Improve Character Movement Precision
Batman sometimes doesn't move as intended during combat. Improving movement precision would enhance combat fluidity.
Enhance Side Mission Randomization
Side mission randomization can be annoying. Making these missions more structured and less random would improve their appeal.
Add More Villain Interactions
While villains are well-realized, more interactions with them would deepen the story and make the world feel more alive.
Improve Gadget Integration
Gadgets are fun but could be better integrated into combat and exploration. Enhancing their utility would make them more impactful.
Expand Open World Activities
The open world is expansive but lacks varied activities. Adding more dynamic events or side activities would increase immersion.
Refine Character-Specific Challenges
Challenges for each character feel excessive. Reducing their number or making them more unique would improve the experience.

I still find myself coming back to this game every two years or so. It reminds me of when times were simpler, and as I get older, the game feels as solid as ever! If you haven't play one of the greatest superhero games, then this is my recommendation to try. The game has great replay value (except Riddler, fuck him) and the entire franchise goes on sale often. If you're looking to sink your teeth into the world of the Dark Knight, then wait for that sale, buy 'em all, you won't regret it!

  • Sentiments

    • I find myself coming back to this game every two years or so, which shows how much I enjoy and value it.
    • The game reminds me of simpler times, which makes it emotionally meaningful and nostalgic for me.
    • As I get older, the game still feels as solid as ever, which highlights its timeless quality and enduring appeal.
    • I consider this game one of the greatest superhero games ever made, and I highly recommend it to others.
    • The game has great replay value, which makes it a worthwhile investment for me.
    • I dislike the Riddler challenges in the game, which I find frustrating and unenjoyable.
    • The entire franchise often goes on sale, which makes it more accessible and affordable for me.
    • I recommend waiting for a sale to buy all the games in the franchise, as it’s a great deal and worth the investment.
    • I believe that anyone looking to explore the world of the Dark Knight should try this game, as it’s a fantastic experience.
    • I feel confident that buying the games won’t lead to regret, which shows my strong belief in their quality.

Negative

Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: SecuROM™ So, for that, you may want to skip it entirely. Largely fixing the control problems of Arkham Asylum on PC, Arkham City takes you and throws you into a large environment that allows you to explore and fight in many different interesting and entertaining ways. Control problems out of the way, you are largely free to play the game without concern for what is happening next, you can just go with the flow and not worry about a lack of gadgets. Of course, Arkham Asylum's silly idea of RPG elements are still around, and shouldn't be, but the developer needed to shoehorn in a reason to collect things - other than just it being an entertaining set of puzzles. Unfortunately it does have a problem with game design, Batman does not fight armies of men in hand to hand combat... He fights small groups from time to time, but it is quite rare to see Batman taking on 50 men. Yet in this game, it happens on several occasions, as though the developers wanted you to feel super badass for doing this amazing thing that Batman would think is incredibly stupid and a waste of his time. Batman does not take down armies, he would use a clever gadget to take down most of them, and then mop up the rest. The game is fun, the story is a bit contrived, but that is kind of standard for Batman stories. I could easily recommend this game to players who enjoyed Arkham Asylum and were looking for more.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game largely fixes the control problems of Arkham Asylum on PC, which is a significant improvement and makes the experience more enjoyable.
    • I appreciate that the game allows me to explore and fight in a large environment with many interesting and entertaining ways, which adds to the overall enjoyment.
    • I find it frustrating that the game still includes Arkham Asylum's RPG elements, which feel unnecessary and shoehorned in just to give a reason for collecting items.
    • I am disappointed with the game's design choice of having Batman fight large armies of men in hand-to-hand combat, which feels unrealistic and out of character for Batman.
    • I think the game is fun overall, despite some issues with the story and design choices, which makes it worth playing.
    • I feel that the story is a bit contrived, but I understand that this is somewhat standard for Batman stories, so it doesn't detract too much from the experience.
    • I would easily recommend this game to players who enjoyed Arkham Asylum and are looking for more, as it builds on the previous game's strengths.
    • I am concerned about the inclusion of 3rd-party DRM (SecuROM™), which might be a reason for some players to skip the game entirely.
    • I like that the game allows me to play without worrying too much about what happens next, as it encourages a more relaxed and immersive experience.
    • I find it odd that the developers chose to make Batman take on large groups of enemies, as it feels like a departure from the character's usual tactics and intelligence.

Negative

By far the worst of the four batman games, the story I find to be tedious and incredibly hard to suspend disbelief. Your telling me an assassin wouldn't recognize she just stabbed something made out of mud. Some doctor can kidnap a billionaire and the mayor. Its just to much. The game play is actually ok, but this games open world is mostly empty. I found the side missions to be tedious and not worth doing. The main campaigns missions were actually quite fun. In general this game simply didn't age particularly well. 4/10.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the story to be tedious and incredibly hard to suspend disbelief, especially with unrealistic scenarios like an assassin not recognizing mud or a doctor kidnapping a billionaire and the mayor.
    • I think the gameplay is actually okay, but it doesn't make up for the game's other flaws.
    • I feel the open world is mostly empty, which makes exploration and immersion less enjoyable.
    • I found the side missions to be tedious and not worth doing, which detracts from the overall experience.
    • I enjoyed the main campaign missions, as they were quite fun and engaging.
    • I believe this game didn't age particularly well, making it feel outdated compared to other games in the series.
    • I consider this to be the worst of the four Batman games, which is disappointing given the series' reputation.

Negative

Can't even launch this f***ing game. Everytime I reach the launch page, it closes and reappears over and over again, no matter how many times I click Start. If anyone sees this please post a solution.

  • Sentiments

    • I am extremely frustrated because I cannot even launch the game. It keeps closing and reopening repeatedly, making it impossible to play.
    • I feel helpless as the game's launch page keeps cycling without allowing me to start the game, no matter how many times I try.
    • I am seeking help from others who might have experienced the same issue and could provide a solution.

Negative

I'd probably have loved this game... if I had been able to play it, that is. Let me describe the process real quick: >Start game >See first cutscene >Crash to Desktop >Start game again >Enter menu >Select save state >Crash to Desktop >Search for fixes, find some >Fixes don't do shit I now have a completely unfunctional game! I love playing the menu and loading screen so much, man!

  • Sentiments

    • I feel frustrated and disappointed because I was unable to play the game due to constant crashes to the desktop.
    • I was initially excited and thought I would love the game, but my experience was ruined by technical issues.
    • I experienced repeated crashes to the desktop after starting the game and attempting to load a save state.
    • I tried searching for fixes to resolve the crashes, but none of them worked, leaving me with a non-functional game.
    • I sarcastically expressed my 'love' for playing the menu and loading screen due to the game's unplayable state.
    • I felt a sense of helplessness as the game remained completely unfunctional despite my efforts to fix it.
    • I was hopeful that the fixes I found would resolve the issues, but they did not, leading to further disappointment.
    • I described the process of attempting to play the game, which highlighted the repetitive and frustrating nature of the crashes.
    • I expressed my sarcasm and frustration by emphasizing how much I 'enjoyed' the menu and loading screens instead of actual gameplay.
    • I felt let down by the game's technical failures, which prevented me from experiencing what could have been a great game.

Negative

2/5 I did not like this game, I powered through the story and won't be continuing with the side missions. This game showed its age more than Arkham Asylum, especially with the amount of gadgets the game introduces to you. Modern games have gadget wheels for a reason and I just felt like a bumbling year one batman trying to use all the gadgets in creative ways. The gameplay had so many options that it got in its own way. I didn't like switching characters to catwoman. While it could be good in a movie, I didn't want to play as her, and her missions added nothing to the story other than her deus ex machina save of batman in the end. (Also I did not enjoy her movement through the open world, the parkour system was a massive miss for me) Story was alright, Gotham felt like Gotham, and the music was good. Kevin Conroy (RIP) & Mark Hamill knocked it out of the park like always.

  • Sentiments

    • I did not like this game and powered through the story without any intention of continuing with the side missions.
    • I felt the game showed its age more than Arkham Asylum, particularly with the overwhelming number of gadgets introduced.
    • I found the gadget system cumbersome and felt like a bumbling year one Batman trying to use all the gadgets creatively.
    • The gameplay had too many options, which ended up getting in its own way and making the experience less enjoyable.
    • I did not enjoy switching characters to Catwoman and felt her missions added little to the story.
    • I found Catwoman's movement and parkour system in the open world to be a massive miss and not enjoyable.
    • The story was alright, but it didn't stand out as particularly exceptional or memorable.
    • Gotham felt like Gotham, which was a positive aspect of the game's atmosphere and setting.
    • The music was good and added to the overall experience of the game.
    • Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill delivered outstanding performances, as always, which was a highlight of the game.
