Community review

Broforce is an explosive, side-scrolling run ‘n’ gun game that celebrates freedom with over-the-top action and humor. With an AI Community Rating of 90.03%, this indie gem lets you control a squad of ultra-patriotic bros, each with unique weapons and abilities, as you battle terrorists and save the world. The game offers single-player and multiplayer modes, including co-op, PvP, and shared-screen chaos, making it perfect for gaming with friends. Players love the variety of characters, the laugh-out-loud humor, and the sheer fun of unleashing destruction in fully destructible environments. However, some find the gameplay repetitive over time, and the lack of vertical shooting mechanics can be frustrating. Despite minor flaws, Broforce delivers a hilarious, action-packed experience that’s perfect for fans of retro shooters and chaotic multiplayer fun.

What the community wishes

Add vertical shooting mechanics
Players find it frustrating that they can only shoot horizontally. Adding the ability to shoot vertically or diagonally would improve combat, especially against enemies attacking from above or below.
Reduce repetitive gameplay
The game becomes repetitive over time due to lack of enemy variety and similar level designs. Introducing more diverse enemies and mechanics could keep gameplay fresh and engaging.
Allow character selection
Players dislike being forced to switch characters when rescuing prisoners. Adding an option to keep the current character would improve player control and satisfaction.
Improve online multiplayer stability
Online multiplayer experiences lag and dropped connections. Enhancing netcode and server stability would improve the co-op experience.
Add more varied level designs
Levels often rely on timed explosives, which can feel repetitive. Introducing more varied and creative level designs would enhance gameplay diversity.
Fix screen shake settings reset
Screen shake settings randomly revert to 100%, causing discomfort. Ensuring settings remain consistent would improve user experience.
Expand character abilities
Some characters feel underpowered or less fun to play. Balancing and expanding character abilities would make all bros equally enjoyable.
Add more boss variety
Boss fights, especially the worm bosses, feel repetitive. Introducing more unique and challenging boss designs would enhance late-game excitement.
Improve VR camera movement
In VR mode, the camera moves unpredictably, causing neck strain. Adding smoother camera controls or options would improve VR gameplay.
Enable custom maps online
Custom maps are not playable online, limiting replayability. Allowing online custom map support would extend the game's lifespan.
Add more enemy types
The lack of enemy variety makes combat feel monotonous. Introducing new enemy types with unique behaviors would keep combat engaging.
Improve performance in alien levels
Performance degrades in levels with continuous alien spawns. Optimizing these levels would ensure smoother gameplay.
Add more story depth
The story is comedic but lacks depth. Adding more narrative elements or lore could enhance player immersion.
Balance difficulty progression
The game feels too long without introducing new mechanics. Balancing difficulty and adding new mechanics over time would maintain player interest.
Add more multiplayer achievements
There is only one multiplayer achievement. Adding more co-op achievements would encourage replayability with friends.
Improve character unlock pacing
Some characters are unlocked too late in the game. Adjusting unlock pacing would allow players to enjoy all characters sooner.
Add more environmental interactions
While the game allows interaction with the environment, more dynamic and creative interactions could enhance gameplay depth.
Optimize for Steam Deck
The game runs well on Steam Deck but has minor bugs. Further optimization would improve the handheld experience.
Add more humor and references
Players enjoy the humor and references. Adding more witty dialogue and pop culture nods would enhance the game's charm.
Expand post-game content
The game lacks post-game content. Adding challenges, leaderboards, or new modes would extend replayability.
"I'll give you a war you wouldn't believe.”
Broforce (2015) represents a side-scrolling run’n’gun game, developed by the company Free Lives published by the company Devolver Digital. Another notable title of the development studio is Anger Foot (2024). Pros & cons: ++ Easy to learn, hard to master. Each bro brings a specific set of skills to the battlefield, and over time you will find out which ones work best for you. My favourite comes in form of the Brolander. The more beheadings I execute the more power flows through my veins, until time and space bends to my will. For there can be only one! + Flex with up to three friends in multiplayer sessions and show off your freedom distribution skills! - I find it puzzling that I can only fire in a horizontal matter. Shooting upwards was not a concern of the developers, to the detriment of anyone who must kill enemies coming from a diagonal or vertical attack angle. And believe me, you will hate the skulls with a passion! Summary: Join an under-funded, overpowered paramilitary organization dealing exclusively in excessive force, to bring freedom into every corner of the known world. And remember bro, evil cannot escape your awesomeness! Achievements: A word of advice for achievement hunters; to obtain “There Can Bro Only One” you have to complete the entire campaign without dying. In addition, no prisoners of war can perish during your run. Estimated time for 100% completion: +60 hours Singleplayer achievements: 16 Multiplayer achievements: 1

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game easy to learn but hard to master, which makes it engaging and rewarding as I discover which bros' skills work best for me.
    • I love the Brolander character because the more beheadings I execute, the more powerful I become, bending time and space to my will.
    • I enjoy the multiplayer aspect, where I can flex with up to three friends and show off my freedom distribution skills.
    • I find it frustrating that I can only fire horizontally, which makes it difficult to deal with enemies attacking from diagonal or vertical angles.
    • I hate the skulls in the game, as they are particularly annoying to deal with due to the limited firing mechanics.
    • I appreciate the game's theme of joining an under-funded, overpowered paramilitary organization to spread freedom, which feels fun and over-the-top.
    • I find the achievement 'There Can Bro Only One' challenging but rewarding, as it requires completing the entire campaign without dying or losing prisoners of war.
    • I think the estimated time for 100% completion being over 60 hours adds significant replay value and longevity to the game.
    • I am neutral about the fact that the game has 16 singleplayer achievements and only 1 multiplayer achievement, as it doesn't significantly impact my enjoyment.
    • I find the game's humor and over-the-top action enjoyable, as it aligns well with the theme of excessive force and freedom distribution.

Positive

It's the manliest game of all time. Each minute played is documented to boost testosterone by 20%. By the time you finish it, you'll be a blob of pure semen ready to explode. Makes you wanna dive headfirst into a sperm bank and chug everything they got. Actually, be right back.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is described as extremely masculine and empowering, with a strong emphasis on boosting testosterone and physical vitality.
    • I perceive the game as being humorously exaggerated in its portrayal of masculinity, to the point of being absurd and over-the-top.
    • I sense that the game is portrayed as having an intense and overwhelming effect on the player, almost to a comical degree.
    • I interpret the review as suggesting that the game is so impactful that it could metaphorically transform the player into a hyper-masculine entity.
    • I notice that the review uses hyperbolic and graphic language to emphasize the game's extreme and exaggerated nature.

Positive

If you want a fun simple multiplayer game like the original nintendo was, then this is your game. Me and my 2 sons have had a blast with this. Its also been fun explaining the characters to them since they have no idea who they are. How the enemies and how you die has brought tons of laughs to us. Its just good ole fun.

  • Sentiments

    • I find this game to be a fun and simple multiplayer experience, reminiscent of the original Nintendo games, which brings a lot of enjoyment.
    • Playing this game with my two sons has been an absolute blast, creating memorable and enjoyable moments together.
    • I have enjoyed explaining the characters to my sons, as they are unfamiliar with them, which adds an educational and bonding aspect to the experience.
    • The way the enemies behave and the manner in which you die in the game has brought tons of laughter and joy to us.
    • This game is just good old-fashioned fun, providing a straightforward and entertaining experience without unnecessary complexity.

Negative

It gets really repetitive and boring after a certain point with not enough enemy variation to make it feel satisfying The alien levels at the end are especially a good example of this, with repeated worm boss designs which act functionally the same Some of the characters you unlock are also just really annoying to play compared to others and aren't fun, one in particular who only shoots bullets out of her feet. The movement tech is nice, and she was a Godsend for beating some of the worm bosses much quicker, but it was really annoying to have to switch and up and use her when you'd be forced to. Some of the mechanics you could have for some playable characters would be interesting or fun, but you never really get enough time with them to actually fully remember it, or only unlock especially late in the game once you're basically done with it Overall it goes on for too long, with too many available characters (which you can't choose to play as and ultimately master), and ends up being a slog after the first half of the game The amount of characters and references are at least pretty cool to see and play as for the first time when you get them

  • Sentiments

    • I feel the game gets really repetitive and boring after a certain point, with not enough enemy variation to keep it satisfying.
    • I find the alien levels at the end particularly frustrating, with repeated worm boss designs that feel functionally the same.
    • I think some of the unlockable characters are annoying to play, especially one who only shoots bullets out of her feet, which feels gimmicky and unfun.
    • I appreciate the movement tech of certain characters, as it was helpful for beating some of the worm bosses much quicker.
    • I feel annoyed when forced to switch to certain characters just to progress, which disrupts the flow of gameplay.
    • I find some character mechanics interesting or fun, but they are introduced too late or not given enough time to fully explore and master.
    • I believe the game goes on for too long, with too many characters that you can't choose to master, making it feel like a slog after the first half.
    • I enjoy the amount of characters and references, which are cool to see and play as for the first time when unlocked.

Negative

The first 5 levels are so much fun.... Then the rest of the game decides level design = explosives that go off after 3-4 seconds so you have to cower behind boxes or avoid enemies. I think I made it to level 10 before realizing I was not having fun anymore

  • Sentiments

    • I found the first 5 levels of the game to be incredibly fun and enjoyable.
    • I felt that the level design after the first 5 levels became repetitive and frustrating, relying too much on explosives that detonate after 3-4 seconds.
    • I had to constantly cower behind boxes or avoid enemies due to the explosive mechanics, which made the gameplay less enjoyable.
    • I realized by level 10 that I was no longer having fun with the game.
    • The shift in gameplay mechanics after the initial levels significantly reduced my enjoyment of the game.

Negative

Very good games but has bugs and forced camera shake. - I go to setting, set the camera shake to 25%, since playing with 4 people and everyone make too many explosions make us lose focus of where we are. But the game force the camera shake back up. Why don't you respect player's choice. - Dash key cannot be remapped. Player 3 and 4 do not have dash key even though it's a crucial feature to play Anderbro. - Level Editor doesn't work.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game to be very good overall, which is a positive aspect.
    • I am frustrated by the presence of bugs in the game, which negatively impacts my experience.
    • I dislike the forced camera shake, as it disrupts my focus during gameplay, especially with multiple players and explosions.
    • I am annoyed that the game does not respect my choice to reduce camera shake to 25%, as it forces it back up.
    • I am disappointed that the dash key cannot be remapped, which limits my control options.
    • I find it unfair that players 3 and 4 do not have access to the dash key, which is crucial for playing Anderbro.
    • I am frustrated that the level editor does not work, which limits my ability to create custom content.

Negative

Pros: - Funny "bro" puns - A surprisingly large variety of characters - Nice visual and sound quality Cons: - Too much trial and error for what should be a funny and fast-paced 2D side scroller - One-shot kills - Inconsistent mechanics (running, jumping, explosives) This game is harder than it should be, and is mostly annoying to play than challenging. I can appreciate the humor it has and the variety characters with weapon styles, but after a short time it just stopped being fun after having to try and error each level until you somehow got it right movements or got lucky.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the 'bro' puns in the game to be genuinely funny and entertaining.
    • I was pleasantly surprised by the large variety of characters available in the game.
    • I appreciated the nice visual and sound quality, which enhanced the overall experience.
    • I felt the game relied too much on trial and error, which detracted from what should have been a fast-paced and fun experience.
    • I found the one-shot kills to be frustrating and unfair, making the game less enjoyable.
    • I noticed inconsistent mechanics, such as running, jumping, and explosives, which made gameplay feel unreliable.
    • I felt the game was harder than it should be, leading to more annoyance than genuine challenge.
    • I initially enjoyed the humor and variety of characters with unique weapon styles, but this enjoyment faded quickly.
    • I stopped having fun after repeatedly trying and failing levels due to unclear movements or reliance on luck.

Negative

I thought I would try this game as a break from Helldivers 2. While some may like this game, I didn't care for it. Was kind of fun at first but find the game gets really repetitive and frustrating. I'm also not a fan of some of the game play mechanics (e.g. their bodies absorb all your bullets, but their bullets pass through). To be honest, the "bro" voice over gets really annoying after awhile. Glad I didn't pay over $5 for it otherwise I would be really upset. May come back to it on those occasions when I'm really bored, If you like this style of game then enjoy and have fun.
