AI Review

Call of Juarez Gunslinger is a thrilling action-packed homage to Wild West tales, blending intense gunplay with a captivating story. As a ruthless bounty hunter, you’ll face legendary outlaws like Billy the Kid and Jesse James in epic duels and shootouts. The game’s unique narrative, told through an unreliable narrator, keeps players engaged, while its stunning Western landscapes and satisfying gun mechanics deliver a visually immersive experience. With an AI Community Rating of 89.11%, players praise its fun gameplay, beautiful visuals, and engaging story. However, some note the game’s short length, repetitive encounters, and frustrating dueling mechanics as drawbacks. If you’re a fan of fast-paced action and Wild West lore, this game offers a solid, albeit brief, adventure worth exploring.

What the community wishes

Game is too short
The game is incredibly short, leaving players wanting more content or a longer campaign to fully enjoy the experience.
Repetitive gameplay
The gameplay can feel repetitive due to a lack of enemy variety and basic AI, which reduces long-term engagement.
Duel mechanics frustrating
The dueling mechanics are overly difficult and frustrating, with aim drift and awkward bullet dodging, detracting from the overall experience.
Linear gameplay limits exploration
The linear nature of the game limits exploration and replayability, which could be improved with more open-world elements or varied mission structures.
Lack of meaningful replay value
Replaying the game on higher difficulties doesn't offer significant new content or rewards, reducing the incentive for multiple playthroughs.
Enemy AI too basic
The enemy AI lacks complexity, making encounters predictable and less challenging, which could be improved with smarter AI behaviors.
Outdated graphics and lighting
The game's graphics and lighting feel outdated, making it difficult to distinguish enemies and reducing visual clarity during combat.
Controller aim assist missing
The lack of aim assist for controllers makes aiming difficult, especially during fast-paced combat, which could be improved for better accessibility.
Bullet registration issues
There are occasional issues with bullet registration, where shots don't hit as expected, which can frustrate players during critical moments.
Skill tree lacks depth
The skill tree offers limited depth and doesn't significantly alter gameplay, which could be expanded to provide more meaningful customization options.
More enemy variety needed
The game lacks enemy variety, leading to repetitive encounters. Adding more diverse enemy types could enhance gameplay diversity.
Arcade mode could be expanded
The arcade mode is fun but could benefit from more levels, challenges, or unique mechanics to increase replayability and engagement.
Story ends too abruptly
The story feels rushed and ends abruptly, leaving players wanting more narrative depth or a more satisfying conclusion.
More environmental variety needed
The game could benefit from more varied environments to keep the visual and gameplay experience fresh throughout the campaign.
Platforming mechanics are buggy
The platforming sections in the game are buggy and poorly implemented, which detracts from the overall polish and enjoyment.
More meaningful collectibles
While collectibles provide historical context, they could be more integrated into gameplay or offer tangible rewards to enhance their value.
Difficulty spikes in duels
The duels have inconsistent difficulty spikes, which can frustrate players. Balancing these encounters better would improve the overall experience.
More narrative twists and depth
While the unreliable narrator is a great concept, adding more narrative twists or deeper storytelling could further enhance the game's appeal.
Expand skill system options
The skill system is solid but could be expanded with more diverse abilities or playstyles to increase player choice and replayability.
Improve replayability with new content
Adding new content, such as side missions, alternate endings, or additional modes, could significantly improve the game's replayability.

Masterclass "modern" FPS game - it's oozing with personality, my only complaint with the game is that it's incredibly short... You can still replay it a bit (since it's arcade-y). I can easily tell you that this is one of the best western game on PC.

Positive

Alongside Red Dead Redemption, Call of Juarez is one of the few Wild West shooters I would recommend. You play as a bounty hunter who tells the story of his hunt for the most legendary outlaws of the Wild West, including Jesse James and the Dalton Brothers. In doing so, the levels change depending on what the narrator has to say, which is a creative approach and adds a humorous touch as well. Besides that, Call of Juarez offers fast revolver action, duels, bullet time and an arcade mode. All in all, it's a fun Wild West shooter and can also be interesting for those who aren't very interested in Wild West stuff, like me.

    • I feel that the game's narrative structure, where the story is told by a bounty hunter, adds depth and personality to the experience.
    • I believe the game's ability to appeal to players who aren't very interested in Wild West themes is a testament to its broad appeal and quality.

Positive

Clever adaptation of Western tropes to a linear cover shooter. The levels allow for different approaches, but never make it unclear where to go next. The narrative is playfull and the overall lighthearted tone is appreciated in a sea of dour and dreary shooters. Overall a dense, enjoyable experience.

Positive

It's a western-themed first-person shooter (FPS) with strong storytelling, including a surprising twist at the end. The voice acting is great which really brings the characters to life and the pistol duel mechanics are both simple and a bit challenging adding an interesting layer to the gameplay. The arcade-style gameplay is interesting, but the game is relatively short. 8/10

Negative

- old wild west bullet sponges + QTE simulator - if you think duels in RDR2 are lame, wait till you see this game. - the game gives you the illusion of having three different combat paths, but in reality dual revolver gun blazing is the only way. For precise shooting, forget about it, your vision keeps getting blurred by enemy shots. For shotgun-play, only if you can survive getting close to them. - the game makes your bullets miss with a certain rate, even if the enemies are dead straight under your cross hair - forget about this junk if you play with a controller, non-existent aim assist - outdated engine comes with terrible distinguishability due to washed out graphics and cartoonish lighting, they see where you are all the time and hit you with miraculous accuracy, but it's hard for you to see them.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game's combat system is frustrating because it forces me to rely on dual revolver gun blazing, as other combat paths like precise shooting and shotgun-play are ineffective due to blurred vision and difficulty in surviving close-range encounters.
    • I find the duels in this game to be even worse than those in RDR2, which I already consider lame, making the experience disappointing.
    • I am annoyed by the game's mechanic that makes bullets miss at a certain rate, even when enemies are directly under my crosshair, which feels unfair and poorly designed.
    • I think the game is unplayable with a controller due to the non-existent aim assist, which makes aiming extremely difficult and frustrating.
    • I am disappointed by the outdated engine, which results in washed-out graphics and cartoonish lighting, making it hard to distinguish enemies while they can see and hit me with miraculous accuracy.
    • I feel that the game gives the illusion of having three different combat paths, but in reality, it limits me to only one viable option, which is dual revolver gun blazing.
    • I find the enemy accuracy to be unrealistically high, which makes the gameplay feel unbalanced and unfair.
    • I think the game's visuals are outdated, with poor distinguishability due to the washed-out graphics and cartoonish lighting, which detracts from the overall experience.
    • I feel that the game's mechanics, such as the forced bullet miss rate and lack of aim assist, make it feel like a chore to play rather than an enjoyable experience.
    • I am frustrated by the game's lack of polish, as it combines outdated visuals with frustrating mechanics, making it feel like a poorly designed product.

Negative

On the upside, the story is a wild ride of fun and the gunplay is responsive. The art style is probably not for everyone but I thought everything looked great and helped sell the narrative, which again, is great. The music and voice acting are well done. Honestly this game got really dang close to being everything it wanted to be. Except dueling. At the start of a duel you suddenly drink five bottles of whiskey and lose ten nights of sleep so your hands and aim keep drifting around. You also have to dodge bullets with about as much grace as a hippo. The duels tanked my enjoyment of the game. I'd honestly pay twice as much for the game if there was a skip duels option.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the story to be a wild ride of fun, which greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the game.
    • The gunplay felt responsive and satisfying, contributing positively to the overall experience.
    • I thought the art style looked great and helped sell the narrative, even though it might not appeal to everyone.
    • The music and voice acting were well done, adding to the immersive quality of the game.
    • The game came really close to being everything it wanted to be, which I found impressive.
    • The dueling mechanics were frustrating, as they made my hands and aim feel like they were drifting uncontrollably.
    • Dodging bullets during duels felt clumsy and lacked grace, which significantly detracted from my enjoyment.
    • The duels tanked my overall enjoyment of the game, despite other strong aspects.
    • I would pay twice as much for the game if there was an option to skip the duels, highlighting how much they impacted my experience.

Negative

Pros • Arcade shooting gallery-style game, pretty fun for short periods of time. Cons • The game takes control over your camera all the time, and it is impossible to know when you're in control again. Throws you off the flow. • Hard to see the enemies without "concentration mode". • You are railroaded all the time. Deviate from the path, and it's back to the checkpoint. That's fun. • Control in duels is totally different than the main game. Why? • Narrator won't shut the hell up. I get that this is the game's gimmick, but it got old after like 20 minutes.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the arcade shooting gallery-style gameplay to be pretty fun, especially for short periods of time.
    • I feel frustrated that the game takes control over my camera constantly, making it impossible to know when I regain control, which disrupts the flow.
    • I struggle to see enemies clearly without using 'concentration mode,' which feels like a limitation.
    • I dislike being railroaded all the time; deviating from the path results in being sent back to the checkpoint, which feels restrictive and unfun.
    • I find it confusing and inconsistent that the control scheme in duels is totally different from the main game.
    • I find the narrator's constant commentary annoying; while it's the game's gimmick, it gets old very quickly, within about 20 minutes.

Negative

Not worthy of the Call of Juarez name. Not only has it nothing to do with it, it's inferior in every way. Style, tone, story, writing, mechanics, everything dumbed down and has Ubisoft stink all over it. The worst Western game since Custer's Revenge!

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is not worthy of the Call of Juarez name, as it lacks any meaningful connection to the series.
    • I believe the game is inferior in every way compared to its predecessors, including style, tone, story, and writing.
    • I think the mechanics of the game have been dumbed down, which significantly reduces its quality.
    • I sense that the game has a 'Ubisoft stink' all over it, implying a lack of originality and poor execution.
    • I consider this to be the worst Western game since Custer's Revenge, which is a strong criticism of its overall quality.

Negative

Not really a bad game, the clunky movement and unsatisfying gunplay just show its age. However i really enjoyed the way the story was integrated into the gameplay itself. I think a remastered version could polish up all the unfun parts of the game.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is not really bad, but it has some noticeable flaws that detract from the overall experience.
    • I find the movement in the game to be clunky, which negatively impacts the gameplay.
    • I think the gunplay is unsatisfying, which makes the combat feel less enjoyable.
    • I believe the game shows its age, particularly in its mechanics and design.
    • I really enjoyed how the story was integrated into the gameplay, which added depth to the experience.
    • I feel that a remastered version could improve the game by polishing its less enjoyable aspects.
