AI Review

Castle Crashers is a beloved 2D arcade adventure game that combines action, RPG elements, and chaotic multiplayer fun. With an AI Community Rating of 89.47%, this game is a fan-favorite for its vibrant graphics, intuitive combat system, and hilarious humor. Up to four players can team up locally or online to hack, slash, and smash their way through a whimsical kingdom, rescuing princesses and battling quirky enemies. The game features over 25 unlockable characters, 40+ weapons, and adorable animal companions that add unique abilities to your journey. Recent updates, like the Barbarian Makeover, introduced uncapped framerates, Ultra texture quality, and the fast-paced Back Off Barbarian mini-game. While praised for its fun multiplayer and charming art style, some players note repetitive combat mechanics and occasional difficulty spikes. Despite minor flaws, Castle Crashers remains a must-play for fans of co-op action and lighthearted adventures.

What the community wishes

Improve online multiplayer connectivity
Players report issues with private lobbies, where they cannot join friends' games despite working public servers. This significantly impacts the multiplayer experience and needs urgent attention.
Add health bars for enemies
Enemies have high HP without visible health bars, making combat feel tedious. Adding health bars would improve player feedback and combat clarity.
Reduce repetitive combat mechanics
Combat can feel repetitive over time. Introducing more varied mechanics or enemy behaviors could enhance engagement and replayability.
Address difficulty spikes in levels
Certain levels, like Lava World, are disproportionately difficult and frustrating. Balancing difficulty and enemy behavior would improve player experience.
Add more character customization options
Players suggest adding a workshop or more DLC characters to increase replayability and personalization.
Improve leveling system progression
Grinding for levels becomes monotonous, especially at higher levels. Adjusting the leveling curve or adding alternative progression methods could help.
Fix minor bugs and glitches
Minor bugs, such as occasional connectivity issues or visual glitches, detract from the experience. Addressing these would improve overall polish.
Expand story content in second half
The second half of the game feels like filler with less plot progression. Adding more story-driven content could enhance immersion.
Improve Back-Off Barbarian mini-game
The mini-game's color-coded controls can be confusing, especially with faster enemies. Simplifying or clarifying controls would improve accessibility.
Add more enemy variety
Some enemies feel overpowered or repetitive. Introducing more diverse enemy types and behaviors would keep combat fresh.
Optimize multiplayer lobby matchmaking
Finding players in multiplayer lobbies can take too long, and players often leave immediately. Improving matchmaking and retention would enhance multiplayer.
Add more post-game content
Players suggest adding more challenges or modes after completing the main story to increase replayability and longevity.
Improve single-player experience
While multiplayer is the highlight, the single-player mode feels lacking. Adding more features or incentives for solo players would balance the experience.
Add more visual feedback in combat
Combat lacks visual feedback, such as hit effects or damage numbers. Adding these would make combat feel more impactful and satisfying.
Expand weapon and pet variety
While there are many weapons and pets, players suggest adding more unique abilities or effects to increase strategic depth.
Improve platforming mechanics
Some platforming sections are frustratingly difficult. Refining controls or level design for these sections would improve gameplay flow.
Add more humor and references
Players enjoy the humor and references but suggest adding more to keep the tone consistent and entertaining throughout the game.
Optimize game for keyboard controls
While controllers are preferred, keyboard controls could be improved to make the game more accessible to all players.
Add more boss fight mechanics
Boss fights are enjoyable but could benefit from more varied mechanics or phases to increase challenge and engagement.
Increase replayability with new modes
Players suggest adding new modes, such as survival or challenge modes, to increase replayability and extend the game's lifespan.

Positive

I got this game on sale and boy was it worth it, I was obsessed over it for a few weeks. Let's start the review.
Graphics
Very wacky animated visuals with some crude visual humor here and there reminiscent of early 00s Newgrounds. Absolute SOUL!
Gameplay
An arcade styled 4-player side-scrolling beat'em up. Combat feels great and you can combo to your heart's content. Depending on your timing of certain hits you can make infinite combos. Using magic to combine with your melee attacks can do alot of damage so I usually do that. There are Animal Orbs that are hidden through out the game with each one having it's own unique perk that you gain by having that certain Animal Orb by your side. The same goes for weapons, there are alot of weapons hidden across the game. You can unlock probably every single enemy in the game as a playable character which is nice.
DLC
The DLC characters, the Blacksmith and the Pink Knight are awesome, Blacksmith is my highest level. The DLCs are both cheap (I bought them along time ago but I think they were 99 cents) and the money goes to charity.
Bonus character
You get to a new pet and a character by owning the game ''Battleblock Theater'' which is made by the developers of Castle Crashers. The character Hatty Hattington and the pet Golden whale. It's a nice gift just for owning an equally awesome game.
The Plot
The plot is pretty simple, 4 princesses get kidnapped and a magical crystal gets stolen from the king and 4 knights head out to rescue the princesses (1 if you don't have any friends) and retrieve the magic crystal.
Pros.
+Really fluid gameplay +Big roster +Alot of replay value +Really fun with friends and even without friends. +Difficulty is just right - provides you with challange later on and goes easy on you in the beginning. +Alot of unlockables.
Cons.
-Combat gets slightly repetitive.
Final Verdict

9.6/10
• Sentiments

    • I was obsessed with this game for a few weeks after getting it on sale, and it was absolutely worth it.
    • The graphics are very wacky and animated, with crude visual humor reminiscent of early 00s Newgrounds, which I found full of soul.
    • The gameplay is an arcade-style 4-player side-scrolling beat'em up, and the combat feels great with the ability to combo endlessly.
    • I love using magic combined with melee attacks to deal a lot of damage, which adds depth to the combat.
    • There are many hidden Animal Orbs and weapons throughout the game, each with unique perks, which I found exciting to discover.
    • The DLC characters, the Blacksmith and the Pink Knight, are awesome, and I appreciate that the DLCs are cheap and support charity.
    • Owning 'Battleblock Theater' unlocks a bonus character and pet, which I thought was a nice gift for fans of the developers.
    • The plot is simple but enjoyable, with four knights rescuing princesses and retrieving a magic crystal.
    • The combat can get slightly repetitive over time, which is a minor downside to an otherwise great game.
    • I gave the game a 9.6/10 because of its fluid gameplay, big roster, replay value, and fun factor, both solo and with friends.

Negative

Gameplay is fun but it's a 50-50 toss-up of whether the multiplayer invite works or not; it frequently results in "Game no longer available" and we won't be able to play, even if the lobby is open to everyone online. Really frustrating to deal with considering I bought the game to play with my friends.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the gameplay to be fun and enjoyable, which is a positive aspect of the game.
    • I am frustrated with the multiplayer invite system, as it frequently fails to work, resulting in 'Game no longer available' errors.
    • I am disappointed that even when the lobby is open to everyone online, I am unable to join and play with my friends.
    • I feel that the multiplayer issues are particularly frustrating because I bought the game specifically to play with my friends.
    • I experience a 50-50 chance of the multiplayer invite working, which makes the system unreliable and inconsistent.

Negative

My friends and I have not been able to get the online multiplayer to work. We can join public servers but we cannot join each other's games. We got it to work once but that was it. Hopefully this can be fixed but until then this game is no fun.

  • Sentiments

    • I am frustrated that the online multiplayer does not work properly, as my friends and I cannot join each other's games.
    • I feel disappointed because we were only able to get the multiplayer to work once, and it has not worked since.
    • I am hopeful that the issue with the multiplayer will be fixed in the future.
    • I find the game to be no fun at the moment due to the multiplayer issues.
    • I am able to join public servers, but this does not resolve the issue of playing with my friends.

Negative

This game is not working when trying to play on a private lobby. It just keeps saying "Game No Longer Available." I thought it was my Wifi, but I can join public servers with no issues, my friends can too. So we cannot play together which is not fun. Do not recommend. I hope they can improve thier private servers. We were able to play once, but we have tried a bunch of times after that, and it has not worked.

  • Sentiments

    • I am frustrated because the game is not working when trying to play on a private lobby, and it keeps saying 'Game No Longer Available.'
    • I thought the issue was with my Wifi, but I can join public servers with no issues, which makes the problem even more confusing.
    • My friends can also join public servers, but we cannot play together, which is not fun and ruins the experience.
    • I do not recommend this game because of the persistent issues with private servers.
    • I hope the developers can improve their private servers to fix this problem.
    • We were able to play together once, but every attempt after that has failed, which is disappointing.

Negative

I almost broke my keyboard in primal, unfathomable, godlike, rage playing the stupid freaking volleyball minigame these stupid npcs and their gold medal olympic team are the WORST WORST IN THE LEAGUE I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE FOR GODS SAKE I BROKE MY MIC AND I CANT EVEN STAND IT UP STRAIGHT ANYMORE SCREW THE PRINCESSES LET MARIO THAT ITALIAN PLUMBER SAVE THEM IM GOING ON A VACATION TO MIAMI AND IM RUNNING INTO THE SWAMPS AND NO ONE IS EVER SEEING ME AGAIN. good game though ngl.

  • Sentiments

    • I experienced extreme frustration and rage while playing the volleyball minigame, to the point where I almost broke my keyboard.
    • I found the NPCs in the volleyball minigame to be incredibly difficult and frustrating, comparing them to a gold medal Olympic team.
    • I expressed intense anger and frustration, stating that I couldn't take it anymore and even broke my microphone.
    • I sarcastically suggested that Mario, the Italian plumber, should save the princesses instead of me, indicating my frustration with the game's challenges.
    • I declared my intention to go on a vacation to Miami and run into the swamps, humorously expressing my desire to escape the game's frustrations.
    • Despite my frustrations, I acknowledged that the game is good, showing a positive sentiment overall.

Negative

The aspect ratio doesn't adjust correctly, so I have to look at the 1/4 of my screen the game opens in to play, and I have never once had someone else connect to an online game I set as "game with anyone" instead of "game with friends", no matter how stinking long I wait. I mean that the half hour steam shows I have played was a half hour straight of the game open waiting for another player. The game is, not exaggerating, unplayable.

  • Sentiments

    • I am extremely frustrated that the aspect ratio doesn't adjust correctly, forcing me to play the game in a small portion of my screen.
    • I have never been able to connect with another player in an online game set as 'game with anyone,' no matter how long I wait.
    • I spent half an hour waiting for another player to join, which was the entirety of my playtime according to Steam.
    • The game is unplayable in its current state, which is not an exaggeration.
