AI Review

Cuphead is a visually stunning run-and-gun action game that pays homage to 1930s cartoons with its hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz soundtrack. With a focus on challenging boss battles, players take on the roles of Cuphead or Mugman in single-player or local co-op mode, battling through strange worlds to repay a debt to the devil. The game boasts a 90.64% AI Community Rating, praised for its fun gameplay, amazing music, and challenging yet rewarding difficulty. However, some players find the game hard and frustrating due to its steep learning curve and occasional randomness in boss mechanics. Despite these critiques, Cuphead is widely regarded as a masterpiece, offering a unique blend of retro aesthetics and modern gameplay. If you love action-packed challenges and nostalgic visuals, Cuphead is a must-play.

What the community wishes

Improve keyboard-only multiplayer support
The game does not support multiplayer on a single keyboard, requiring controllers. This limitation should be clearly communicated to avoid player frustration.
Reduce randomness in boss mechanics
Some boss mechanics feel unfair due to high randomness, such as unpredictable enemy jumps and platform spawns. Reducing randomness would improve counterplay and fairness.
Add more accessibility options
The game's difficulty can be overwhelming for casual players. Adding more accessibility options, such as easier modes or assist features, would make it more inclusive.
Clarify control schemes in-game
The game does not clearly explain control schemes, especially for keyboard players. Adding in-game tutorials or control scheme explanations would improve the user experience.
Expand DLC content length
The DLC is praised but considered too short. Expanding the DLC with more levels or bosses would enhance its value.
Add more save points or checkpoints
The game's difficulty can lead to frustration due to frequent retries. Adding more save points or checkpoints would reduce player burnout.
Improve tutorial for new players
New players struggle with the game's mechanics initially. A more detailed tutorial or onboarding process would help ease players into the game.
Add more weapon customization options
While weapon variety is praised, expanding customization options for weapons and abilities would add depth to gameplay.
Include a practice mode for bosses
A practice mode for bosses would allow players to learn patterns without the pressure of losing progress, improving the learning curve.
Enhance multiplayer communication features
Multiplayer lacks communication tools, making coordination difficult. Adding in-game chat or voice communication would improve co-op play.
Optimize controls for keyboard players
Keyboard controls are less intuitive compared to controllers. Improving keyboard responsiveness and customization would enhance the experience for PC players.
Add more visual cues for attacks
Some attacks are hard to predict due to unclear visual cues. Adding clearer indicators for enemy attacks would improve gameplay fairness.
Expand story content in DLC
The DLC's story is engaging but brief. Expanding narrative content would make the DLC more immersive and satisfying.
Add difficulty scaling options
The game's difficulty is polarizing. Adding scalable difficulty options would cater to both casual and hardcore players.
Include a replay feature for levels
A replay feature for completed levels would allow players to revisit and improve their performance without starting over.
Add more environmental variety
While levels are varied, more environmental diversity would enhance the game's visual and thematic appeal.
Improve boss telegraphing for attacks
Some boss attacks are hard to anticipate. Improving telegraphing for boss moves would make fights more manageable and fair.
Add more post-game content
After completing the game, there is limited content to engage with. Adding post-game challenges or modes would extend replayability.
Include a co-op leaderboard
Adding a co-op leaderboard would encourage friendly competition and replayability among multiplayer players.
Expand character customization options
While character variation is praised, more customization options for characters would add personalization and replay value.

Cuphead is one tough nut to crack for sure! This game's got me duking it out with some serious challenges, but oh boy, it's one hell of a ride. The vintage cartoon vibes and those snazzy tunes, they've got this magic that keeps me grinning, even when I'm getting schooled left and right. I've danced with defeat more times than I can count, yet it's like a never-ending carnival of fun. The Cuphead charm still has me hooked even after all those times of me biting the dust. However, let me pay tribute to the hardworking developers who went through the wringer to birth this masterpiece. I can't help but salute their sheer grit and gumption. In the case of developers’ devotion as well as artistic talent, there isn’t any dearth of respect from myself toward them. So if you haven't jumped into the Cuphead fray yet, I strongly reckon you give it a go. It's a real knockout. Trust me, you're in for one hell of a time.

Warning - This Game is Truly a fountain of indie titles I have ever played. Cuphead is not for everyone. If you're looking for a relaxing and easy game, this is not it. However, if you're a fan of challenging games and appreciate beautiful animation, Cuphead is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared to die... a lot. While the visuals are certainly a highlight, Cuphead is also a mechanically sound game. The controls are tight and responsive, and the variety of weapons and special abilities keep the gameplay fresh. The game also features a great soundtrack that perfectly complements the visuals and gameplay. The first thing that strikes you about Cuphead is its stunning animation. The game is hand-drawn in a style reminiscent of old cartoons, with vibrant colors, fluid movement, and expressive characters. Every frame is a work of art, and the attention to detail is simply breathtaking. It was completely an unforgettable experience with this game! I would suggest you to check this one out .

    • I was impressed by the game's soundtrack, which perfectly complemented the visuals and gameplay. It added an extra layer of immersion to the overall experience.
    • I noticed that Cuphead is not for everyone, especially for those seeking a casual or easy gaming experience. The high difficulty level might be a turn-off for some players.
    • The attention to detail in the animation was breathtaking, and it made me appreciate the effort and artistry that went into creating the game.
    • I found myself dying a lot while playing Cuphead, which could be frustrating for some players. However, I saw it as part of the challenge and enjoyed overcoming it.
    • The game's mechanical soundness stood out to me, as it felt well-designed and polished. This made the challenging gameplay more rewarding.
    • I would highly recommend Cuphead to anyone who appreciates beautiful animation and challenging gameplay. It was a standout indie title for me.
    • The game's unique art style and challenging nature made it a memorable experience, but I understand that it might not appeal to all types of players.

Positive

This game will hurt your soul but when you finally beat that boss that you've been stuck at for about 2 hours, you will get a rush so good that snorting coke will feel like drinking water. 10 out of f*cking 10.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that this game is incredibly challenging, to the point where it feels like it is hurting my soul.
    • I experience an immense sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when I finally defeat a boss that I have been stuck on for hours.
    • The rush of victory after overcoming a difficult boss is so intense that it surpasses any other feeling, even comparing it to the effects of drugs.
    • I rate this game a perfect 10 out of 10, indicating that I find it to be an exceptional and highly enjoyable experience.

Negative

This game is garbage, if you are a normal player you have to work your ass off to pass a level, or you have to be an abnormal psychopath and memorize and play the game, in short if you want to be a neurotic autistic person this is the game for you.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is extremely frustrating and requires an unreasonable amount of effort to progress, which makes it unenjoyable for normal players.
    • I believe the game is designed in a way that only appeals to players who are willing to memorize and replay levels excessively, which feels abnormal and unappealing.
    • I think the game is not suitable for casual players and seems to cater only to those with obsessive or neurotic tendencies.
    • I find the game's difficulty level to be excessively high, making it feel inaccessible and unfair to most players.
    • I perceive the game as being poorly designed for a general audience, as it seems to reward only extreme dedication or memorization.
    • I feel that the game's mechanics are punishing and lack balance, which detracts from the overall experience.
    • I think the game's design encourages unhealthy or obsessive behavior, which I find concerning and off-putting.
    • I believe the game is not worth playing unless you are willing to invest an unreasonable amount of time and effort.
    • I find the game's challenges to be overly repetitive and tedious, which makes it feel like a chore rather than entertainment.
    • I feel that the game is poorly suited for anyone who values a balanced and enjoyable gaming experience.

Negative

I though I can just play with my family on 1 keyboard but it need a controler for it the game iz good it not bad I just dun like it because the game doesn't say I can only play with my family if I have a controler (for why this review come up so late because when I brought this game my sister iz still young and cannot play game this hard now she grow up and want to try this game with me and now I discover that the game doesn't allow you to play on one keyboard) -DON'T BUY IT IF YOU THINK LIKE ME

  • Sentiments

    • I thought I could play with my family on one keyboard, but the game requires a controller, which is disappointing.
    • The game is good and not bad, but I don't like it because it doesn't clearly state that a controller is needed for multiplayer.
    • I bought the game when my sister was young and couldn't play, but now that she's older and wants to play with me, I discovered the one-keyboard limitation.
    • I feel misled because the game doesn't mention that you can't play with one keyboard for multiplayer.
    • I advise others not to buy the game if they expect to play multiplayer on one keyboard.

Negative

As someone who finished dozens of soulslikes/roguelikes/bullethells this is just sometimes plain unfair and I hate games like these (you get shot in bad way + some jumping enemy with random vector of jump + random platforms you have to jump on spawn in such a way you bound to get hit or you fall and get hit anyways). I don't mind redoing boss fights over and over but I strongly dislike high randomness to the point of not having counterplay besides hindsight "well you had to jump that way 3 seconds ago without knowing what will spawn next and if you chose wrong you're cooked". Art is phenomenal and I'll finish this game because I'm already past half point and it's not terrible or anything just not really for person like me.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game sometimes plain unfair, especially with mechanics like getting shot in a bad way, jumping enemies with random vectors, and randomly spawning platforms that make it hard to avoid damage.
    • I strongly dislike the high randomness in the game, as it feels like there's no counterplay besides hindsight, which makes the experience frustrating.
    • I don't mind redoing boss fights over and over, as I enjoy the challenge and persistence required in such games.
    • I appreciate the phenomenal art in the game, which stands out as a positive aspect despite my frustrations with the gameplay.
    • I will finish the game because I'm already past the halfway point, and while it's not terrible, it's not really suited for someone like me.
    • I feel that the game's mechanics, such as random enemy jumps and platform spawns, are designed in a way that feels punishing rather than rewarding.
    • I dislike the lack of predictability in the game, as it forces me to make decisions without knowing what will happen next, which feels unfair.
    • I acknowledge that the game is not terrible overall, but it doesn't align with my personal preferences for gameplay.
    • I find the game's difficulty to be a mix of challenge and frustration, with some elements feeling more unfair than others.
    • I recognize that the game has redeeming qualities, such as its art style, which keeps me motivated to complete it despite my frustrations.

Negative

Difficult, colorful and....that's about it. Pretty much that's all the pros I find. There are alot of ways to make a game challenging, yet cuphead feels lazy and purposefully difficult by giving you random out of context and out of narrative obstacles and challenges that you head into blindly and can't expect / anticipate ultimately forcing you to go through areas insane amount of times repeating the same fights in order for you to get used to the RNG mechanics which are there only to make the game purposefully difficult in the most pointless way possible. The game is mostly boss fights, which I like. However, unlike Souls Games, I didn't feel a drop of happiness and accomplishment finishing a boss fight in cuphead as I felt extremely annoyed that the effort I've put in was pointless and a waste of time. Challenges are not worth it. Game looks amazing, character design, aesthetics, theme - just great, but that alone is not enough to make me like the game...

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game difficult and colorful, but these are the only positive aspects I can identify.
    • I feel the game is purposefully difficult in a lazy way, with random and out-of-context obstacles that make progression frustrating.
    • I dislike the RNG mechanics, which force me to repeat fights multiple times without any meaningful anticipation or strategy.
    • I appreciate that the game is mostly boss fights, which I generally enjoy in games.
    • I feel no sense of accomplishment or happiness after finishing a boss fight, unlike in Souls Games, which makes the effort feel pointless.
    • I find the challenges in the game not worth the effort, as they feel unrewarding and frustrating.
    • I think the game looks amazing, with great character design, aesthetics, and theme.
    • I believe the visual appeal alone is not enough to make me like the game, as the gameplay experience overshadows it.

Negative

Cuphead is very good looking game. The art style is very unique, the animation is funny and the music is great. HOWEVER, this is NOT a fair game. I tried to pass every boss in easy level…and I still could not beat the game. Some of the levels, and each level is a boos fight, require you to try 300, 400, 500 or even more times to beat the boss. The game is just too difficult, unbalanced, and upsetting. The first 4 or 5 bosses are very simple, but other bosses are freaking impossible. For example the clown, the dog before the devil's casino and many others. I don't want to spend 2 or 3 months of my life just pass a game with 15 levels.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the art style of Cuphead to be very unique and visually appealing, which makes the game stand out.
    • I appreciate the funny and well-executed animation in the game, which adds to its charm.
    • I think the music in Cuphead is great and enhances the overall experience of the game.
    • I feel that Cuphead is not a fair game, as even on easy difficulty, it is extremely challenging to progress.
    • I find the game to be too difficult and unbalanced, which makes it frustrating to play.
    • I am upset by the fact that some bosses require hundreds of attempts to defeat, which feels excessive and discouraging.
    • I notice that the first few bosses are simple, but later bosses become impossibly difficult, which feels inconsistent.
    • I am frustrated by specific bosses like the clown and the dog before the devil's casino, which feel unfairly challenging.
    • I do not want to spend months of my life trying to complete a game with only 15 levels, as it feels like a waste of time.
    • I feel that the game's difficulty overshadows its positive aspects, making it less enjoyable overall.
