Dishonored is an immersive first-person action-adventure game that combines stealth, supernatural abilities, and a gripping revenge story. Set in the steampunk-inspired city of Dunwall, you play as Corvo, a supernatural assassin framed for murder. With a flexible combat system, you can creatively eliminate targets using a mix of gadgets, weapons, and powers like teleportation and time manipulation. The game’s AI Community Rating of 91.2% reflects its engaging gameplay, freedom of choice, and atmospheric world. Players praise its immersive story, stealth mechanics, and replayability, calling it a 'masterpiece.' However, some note inconsistencies in stealth mechanics, overpowered abilities, and a lack of escalation in the final missions. If you enjoy games that reward creativity and offer multiple playstyles, Dishonored is worth exploring. Dive into its rich narrative and discover why it’s a fan favorite among action and stealth enthusiasts.

What the community wishes

Improve stealth mechanics consistency
Stealth mechanics are inconsistent, with AI being either hyper-aware or oblivious. Directional audio is lacking, and the reliance on floating icons for AI status is immersion-breaking. Shadows should be usable for hiding, and AI should not instantly know the player's location when alerted.
Enhance directional audio for stealth
The game lacks proper directional audio, making it difficult to gauge enemy positions during stealth. Adding spatial audio cues would improve immersion and gameplay.
Balance overpowered abilities for stealth
The player's abilities make them overpowered, which contradicts the stealth experience. Balancing these abilities to make stealth more challenging and rewarding would improve gameplay.
Improve AI vertical awareness
AI enemies are vertically blind, making it too easy to snipe or hide from them. Enhancing their vertical awareness would make stealth more realistic and engaging.
Add more meaningful upgrades for stealth
90% of upgrades are useless for pure stealth runs. Adding more meaningful upgrades that enhance stealth gameplay would improve replayability and variety.
Expand story depth and escalation
The story lacks escalation, especially in the final missions, which feel anticlimactic. Adding more depth and tension to the narrative, particularly in the late game, would enhance the overall experience.
Include more varied endings
While the game has multiple endings, they could be more varied and impactful based on player choices. Expanding the consequences of decisions would increase replayability.
Add voice acting for main character
The main character, Corvo, lacks a voice, which reduces immersion. Adding voice acting for Corvo would make the experience feel more realistic and engaging.
Improve last mission pacing
The last three missions feel like a slog and lack excitement. Improving pacing and adding more dynamic elements to these missions would enhance the conclusion.
Add more side mission variety
Side missions are limited and could benefit from more variety and depth. Expanding side content with unique challenges and rewards would improve replayability.
Include additional game modes
The base game lacks additional game modes, which are only available in DLC. Adding more modes, such as survival or challenge modes, would enhance the base game experience.
Improve AI communication and behavior
AI behavior is inconsistent, with poor communication of their status. Improving AI communication and making their behavior more predictable would enhance stealth gameplay.
Add more meaningful loot
Loot is rewarding but could be more meaningful. Adding unique items or upgrades tied to exploration would encourage players to explore more.
Enhance ragdoll physics
Ragdoll physics are occasionally glitchy. Improving these physics would make combat and stealth kills feel more polished and immersive.
Expand on chaos system impact
The chaos system is forgiving but could have more visible and varied impacts on the world. Expanding its effects would make player choices feel more consequential.
Add more dynamic enemy reactions
Enemies react uniformly when alerted, sending the entire map after the player. Adding more dynamic and varied reactions would make stealth more engaging.
Include more environmental storytelling
The story is told mostly through letters and books, which can feel disconnected. Adding more environmental storytelling would make the narrative more immersive.
Improve mission stat tracking
Players often don't know if they've been spotted or killed someone until the mission ends. Adding real-time mission stat tracking would improve stealth runs.
Expand on DLC integration
The DLCs are excellent but feel somewhat separate from the main game. Better integration of DLC content into the main story would enhance continuity.
Add more varied enemy types
Enemy types are limited, making encounters predictable. Adding more varied enemy types with unique behaviors would increase challenge and variety.

In-depth analysis of most impactful community reviews

Positive

This is an iconic immersive sim game with amazing design of maps and game mechanisms. There are many options to approach any situation and determine the city and peoples' fate. The stories in both the main game and DLCs are good. There are a lot of replay value in map exploration and battles. Immersive sim games in general should be done in slow pace, as a lot of fun comes from observing carefully, plan and executive without requirement on reflex. Most part of the game are designed this way and you can play at your own pace. The only exception is the Dunwall City Trials DLC which needs fast reflex in several stages. This also means immersive sims are naturally not suitable for multi-players. Achievements in this game are well designed overall. There are many achievements on possible side stories and different play styles. Note that several achievements in the Dunwall City trials are very difficult. Headhunter, Daredevil, By My Hand Alone and Void Star are all challenging achievements that requires hours of practice and a bit of luck. Overall, it's a very recommended game for any one loves single players games.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game to be an iconic immersive sim with amazing map and game mechanism designs, offering a lot of options to approach situations and influence the city and its people.
    • I appreciate the good stories in both the main game and DLCs, which add depth and engagement to the overall experience.
    • I enjoy the high replay value in map exploration and battles, which keeps the game engaging over multiple playthroughs.
    • I like that the game is designed to be played at a slow pace, allowing for careful observation, planning, and execution without requiring fast reflexes.
    • I find the Dunwall City Trials DLC to be an exception to the slow-paced gameplay, as it requires fast reflexes in several stages, which might not appeal to everyone.
    • I believe immersive sims like this are naturally not suitable for multiplayer, which aligns with the game's design and pacing.
    • I think the achievements in the game are well-designed, with many tied to side stories and different play styles, adding to the game's depth.
    • I note that several achievements in the Dunwall City Trials are very difficult, requiring hours of practice and a bit of luck, which might be frustrating for some players.
    • I highly recommend this game to anyone who loves single-player games, as it offers a rich and immersive experience.

Positive

As well as being a beautifully realized game, Dishonored also has one of my favorite kinds of stealth, where it doesn't feel like you've messed things up when you're caught. To illustrate...

If you're caught in Dishonored, you may do the following: • Magic teleport your way out • Slash and gun your way out • Teleport to a nearby roof and drop kill your enemy • Make deadly rats appear • Windblast your enemies away, and then make rats appear • Grab the nearest oil tank, chuck it, stop time, and then shoot it in mid air • Stop time, shoot in the direction of each enemy, resume time, and watch them fall around you. And then make rats appear. If you're caught in Hitman, you may do the following: • Run n' gun your way to your target • Reload a save

  • Sentiments

    • I find Dishonored to be a beautifully realized game, which makes me appreciate its visual and artistic design.
    • I enjoy the stealth mechanics in Dishonored because it doesn't feel like a failure when I get caught, which makes the gameplay more forgiving and enjoyable.

    • I find the mechanic of stopping time, shooting enemies, and resuming time to watch them fall in Dishonored to be highly engaging and rewarding.
    • I enjoy the flexibility in Dishonored's combat system, such as using windblast to knock enemies away and then summoning rats, which feels dynamic and fun.
    • I appreciate the creative use of environmental objects in Dishonored, like grabbing an oil tank, throwing it, and shooting it mid-air, which adds a layer of strategy.
    • I find the comparison between Dishonored and Hitman interesting, as it highlights the differences in gameplay mechanics and player freedom.
    • I notice that Hitman offers fewer options when caught, such as running and gunning or reloading a save, which feels less dynamic compared to Dishonored.
    • I feel that the review emphasizes Dishonored's strengths in providing multiple solutions to challenges, which makes it stand out compared to other stealth games.

Positive

Dishonored is one of the best single player games I ever played. It came very close to the original Deux Ex for me. There are so many ways to play this game - pure stealth, pure combat or a combination of both. The game manages to take player decisions into account and change things in subtle and interesting ways. The powers and skills acquired allow different ways to approach mission objectives. UI is customizable, and the game works fine on ultra wide resolution (3440x1440). I never experienced any technical issues. It also has quick save, quick load, auto save and manual save. A true PC game. I highly recommend it.

Can you feel the new day rising Climbing up the east horizon? They can't hold us Now we'll fight through Each and every one will start new. -"Honor For All", by late Daniel Licht. Dishonored, a phenomenal game made by Arkane Studio on Unreal Engine. The game follows you, Corvo Attano, as you take down your enemies with powers from the Outsider. Dishonored offers you several choices within the levels through which you can complete your objectives. The level design accommodates for Corvo's Blink ability and lets the player make full use of it. However, Dishonored also has a solid gun gameplay, letting you back-alley-brawl your way to victory. Possess people, Blink everywhere, unleash Whirlwinds, summon Devouring Swarms and use Agility and Adrenaline to their full potential. Nothing is off-limits in Dishonored. The soundtrack is phenomenal, with ''Honor for All'' by the Licht Brothers being my all-time favorite. Absolute god-tier song. R.I.P. Daniel Licht. All in all, out of all Dishonored games, this is the snappiest, fastest and most affordable one. If you want to start playing the series, I highly recommend you start here.

    • I find the gun gameplay in Dishonored to be solid and enjoyable, offering a satisfying combat experience.
    • I am impressed by the variety of powers available, such as Possession, Blink, Whirlwind, and Devouring Swarm, which make the gameplay dynamic and engaging.

    • I feel a sense of nostalgia and admiration for Daniel Licht's work, as 'Honor for All' is my all-time favorite song from the game.
    • I believe Dishonored is the snappiest, fastest, and most affordable entry in the series, making it a great starting point for new players.

ZeniMax joining the "slapping EULAs onto old games" trend with an updated agreement that: "includes my express consent to ZeniMax’s use of Anti-Cheat Tools as described herein", and claims; "The Game is a Service offered by ZeniMax and is only playable online." Acquire Dishonored elsewhere, Steam is happy to let these companies bloat their old games with malicious DRM.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel frustrated and disappointed that ZeniMax is joining the trend of adding restrictive EULAs to old games, which feels unnecessary and invasive.
    • I am concerned about the updated agreement requiring my express consent to ZeniMax’s use of Anti-Cheat Tools, as it feels like an overreach of control.
    • I find it problematic that the game is now described as a service only playable online, which limits accessibility and ownership.
    • I feel distrustful of ZeniMax’s motives for adding malicious DRM to old games, as it seems more about control than improving the player experience.
    • I appreciate that Steam allows users to acquire Dishonored elsewhere, providing an alternative to dealing with these restrictive updates.
    • I feel critical of companies like ZeniMax for bloating old games with unnecessary and potentially harmful DRM measures.
    • I am skeptical about the long-term impact of these changes on the gaming community and the preservation of older games.
    • I feel a sense of loss for the original experience of the game, which is now altered by these new restrictions.
    • I am annoyed by the trend of retroactively imposing new terms on games that were previously free of such limitations.
    • I feel a lack of trust in ZeniMax’s approach to handling older games, as it prioritizes control over user satisfaction.

It's alright. The tools for low chaos playthrough are extremely limited while high chaos playthrough has several times the options, making the former more of a slog than a fun experience at times. I.e. Game offers tons of ways to kill people either directly or indirectly, yet even outside your weapons and tools there are extremely limited ways to do non-lethal takedowns. It's quite telling when only one tool from your weapons and only one power is more or less "required" to have a full kit. Lore has some nice elements to it, but the story itself is pointlessly predictable. The characters, aside from a side character, do not exactly render much of an impression.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the tools for low chaos playthrough are extremely limited, making it more of a slog than a fun experience at times.
    • I notice that high chaos playthrough has several times the options compared to low chaos, which feels unbalanced.
    • I find it frustrating that the game offers tons of ways to kill people but has extremely limited options for non-lethal takedowns.
    • I think it's quite telling that only one tool and one power are more or less required to have a full kit for non-lethal playthroughs.
    • I appreciate that the lore has some nice elements to it, which adds depth to the game.
    • I feel that the story itself is pointlessly predictable, which reduces my engagement with the narrative.
    • I find that the characters, aside from a side character, do not leave much of an impression, making them forgettable.

Negative

The chaos system being tied to endings means you're locked in one of two styles: 1. Have fun and get the bad ending 2. Play through mediocre stealth with like 2 options but get the good ending. Blink is too OP and negates if not outright undermine entire systems that you'd have to worry about if you're doing a stealth run. My kneejerk reaction was *I should stop using it and try the other stuff* but there's also an issue where you'll have to use to make progress cause the other options don't offer non lethal variants (you either blink and shut down a watch tower or you hack it in which case it kills everything that moves) It also had constant bugs that I'm surprised have not been fixed even after so much time (prevalent in the challenge maps)

  • Sentiments

    • I feel frustrated that the chaos system ties endings to gameplay styles, forcing me to choose between having fun and getting a bad ending or enduring mediocre stealth for a good ending.
    • I find the stealth mechanics limiting, with only two options available, which makes the gameplay feel repetitive and uninspired.
    • I think Blink is overpowered, as it undermines other systems and makes stealth runs less challenging or engaging.
    • I feel conflicted about using Blink because, while it feels too strong, it is often necessary for progress due to the lack of non-lethal alternatives.
    • I am disappointed that hacking watch towers results in lethal outcomes, which limits my options for non-lethal playthroughs.
    • I am surprised and frustrated by the constant bugs in the game, especially in the challenge maps, which have not been fixed despite the game being out for a long time.
    • I feel that the game's mechanics, particularly Blink, discourage experimentation with other abilities, which reduces the overall depth of gameplay.
    • I find the lack of non-lethal options for certain mechanics, like disabling watch towers, to be a significant drawback in the game's design.
    • I feel that the game's stealth system could be more engaging if it offered more variety and meaningful choices beyond relying on Blink.
    • I am disappointed that the game's bugs persist, especially in challenge maps, which detracts from the overall experience.

Negative

I played this on console years ago and really enjoyed it. But the game is basically unplayable on a high end PC for me. The framerates appear fine at around 100 fps but the camera is unbearably laggy. I am not typically obsessive about framerates but this is impossible to look at. I couldn't even tolerate the intro sequence.

    • I couldn't even tolerate the intro sequence, which shows how bad the experience was from the very beginning.

Negative

I don't really find the game play that fun or interesting. It's fun for the first few hours but gets really boring and repetitive after a while. Still for a mere 4 bucks on sale it's a enjoyable 4 hours. EDIT: So now having finished the game, turns out using any of the various weapons you are given gets you the bad ending. Basically 90% of your inventory is steel and gun powder based and you have a hand dedicated to holding a sword but using any of it means that everyone calls you a horrible person and hates you. It honestly plays more fun to go full Doom Slayer on random guards than it does to hide in a bush for 30 minutes because each to you step out you get spotted by a guard AND OH MY GOD ITS BEEN 30 MINUTES IN THIS BUSH BUT I CAN'T SHOOT THE GUARD OR ELSE I GET THE BAD ENDING. I shot the guard.

  • Sentiments

    • I don't find the gameplay particularly fun or interesting, as it feels repetitive and boring after the initial few hours.
    • The game is enjoyable for the first few hours, making it worth the low price of 4 bucks on sale.
    • Using weapons or engaging in combat leads to a bad ending, which feels frustrating and restrictive.
    • The game's mechanics encourage stealth, but hiding for long periods feels tedious and unrewarding.
    • The game's inventory system is mostly filled with steel and gunpowder-based items, which feels misleading given the restrictions on their use.
    • Going full combat mode (like Doom Slayer) is more fun than adhering to the stealth mechanics, but it results in negative consequences.
    • The game's narrative punishes players for using weapons, which feels unfair and contradictory to the gameplay options provided.
    • The frustration of being spotted after hiding for 30 minutes highlights the game's flawed stealth mechanics.
    • Despite its flaws, the game provides 4 hours of enjoyment, making it a decent purchase at a discounted price.
    • The decision to shoot the guard reflects the player's frustration with the game's restrictive mechanics.
