Doki Doki Literature Club is a free-to-play indie visual novel that blends casual gameplay with a gripping psychological horror narrative. Join the Literature Club and meet its charming members: Sayori, Natsuki, Yuri, and Monika. What starts as a cute dating sim quickly takes a dark turn, exploring themes of mental health and existential dread. With an AI Community Rating of 87.59%, players praise its emotional story, unique fourth-wall breaks, and unforgettable characters. However, some note pacing issues early on and repetitive poem mechanics. While the game’s psychological horror is a highlight, its intense themes may not suit everyone. If you’re looking for a game that defies expectations and leaves a lasting impact, Doki Doki Literature Club is a must-play—just be prepared for the unexpected.

What the community wishes

Pacing issues in early game
The game's pacing is slow in the first half, with character backstories taking too long to develop. This could be streamlined to maintain player engagement early on.
Over-reliance on poem mechanics
The constant requirement to write poems for characters feels repetitive and could be diversified with other interactive mechanics to enhance gameplay variety.
Psychological horror warnings insufficient
The game's warning about mature themes could be more explicit to better prepare players for its intense psychological horror elements.
Need for more diverse gameplay
The gameplay is described as 'mehh' and lacks depth. Introducing more interactive or varied mechanics could improve engagement.
Character routes feel unbalanced
Some character routes, like Sayori's, are praised, while others feel less developed. Balancing the depth and quality of all routes would enhance the overall experience.
Fourth-wall breaks could be expanded
The game's fourth-wall-breaking mechanics are a highlight, but they could be further expanded to create even more immersive and unique experiences.
More lore exploration needed
The game has rich lore, but some aspects remain unsolved. Adding more in-game exploration or hints could deepen the narrative experience.
Emotional impact too intense for some
The game's emotional and psychological themes are overwhelming for some players. Adding optional content warnings or support resources could help.
Need for more replayability features
While the game is replayable, adding more branching paths or hidden content could increase its replay value.
Audio and visuals could be enhanced
The audio and visuals are good but not exceptional. Improving these aspects could elevate the game's overall atmosphere and immersion.
More character interaction variety
The interactions with characters are engaging but could benefit from more variety and depth to make each playthrough feel unique.
Need for clearer difficulty scaling
The game's difficulty is inconsistent. Adding clearer difficulty scaling or options could make it more accessible to a wider audience.
More exploration of side characters
Side characters like Natsuki and Yuri could have more developed storylines to make them feel as integral as the main characters.
Need for better file manipulation hints
The file manipulation mechanics are unique but could be better explained or hinted at to avoid player confusion.
More emotional support resources
The game's heavy themes could benefit from in-game or post-game resources to help players process their emotions.
Need for more horror elements
Some players expected more horror elements. Adding subtle horror cues earlier could better set expectations.
More diverse endings needed
The game's endings feel limited. Adding more diverse or branching endings could enhance replayability and player satisfaction.
Need for better character balance
Some characters, like Sayori, overshadow others. Balancing character development and screen time could improve overall engagement.
More interactive storytelling
The storytelling is strong but could be more interactive. Adding player-driven choices with greater consequences could deepen immersion.
Need for more accessibility options
The game lacks accessibility options. Adding features like text size adjustment or colorblind modes could make it more inclusive.

this is one of the most weirdest, hard hitting and gut wrenching game ive played in a while i dont wannna spoil it too much here but i just have to say the creator of this game is such a genius, not only does this game show the struggles and hardships with SH and depression but it also captures the pain and sadness it bring with it, the game not only is a physiologic horror its also a quite sad and depressing game as well and its so pure and good at the start that u actually get used to and start getting to know the other characters well and then it starts having lots of "wait what was that" or "was that on my screen?" moments and it just blends so well, overall best horror game ive ever played 5 stars

Negative

Fuck this shit. Don't play this, unless you are a basement-dwelling, idol-girl worshipping weeb in dire need of therapy, self-love and employment - if that's the case, no amount of discouragement is going to divert you from making the dumbest choice of your life, anyway. I mean this. Do not play and stop watching stupid shit Japanese people make to suck out the money you could invest into your first car your mom wishes she was able to afford for you to jump-start your life. You can still do it even if you are 40 and still living with your mom.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel strongly that this game is not worth playing and should be avoided at all costs.
    • I believe this game is targeted at a very specific audience, which I describe negatively as 'basement-dwelling, idol-girl worshipping weebs.'
    • I think the game is a poor investment of money, especially for those who could use their funds for more important life goals, like buying a car.
    • I express frustration and disdain for the game, calling it 'stupid shit' made by Japanese creators.
    • I feel that playing this game would be a 'dumb choice' and a waste of time and resources.
    • I criticize the game's audience, suggesting they need therapy, self-love, and employment instead of playing this game.
    • I imply that the game preys on vulnerable individuals who are easily swayed by its content.
    • I mock the idea of someone still living with their mom at 40, suggesting they should focus on improving their life rather than playing this game.
    • I feel that the game is exploitative, designed to 'suck out money' from its players.
    • I discourage anyone from engaging with this game, emphasizing that it is not worth their time or money.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the game to be extremely repetitive and unenjoyable, as the phrase 'no no no' is repeated excessively throughout the review, indicating frustration or dissatisfaction.
    • Despite the overwhelming negativity, I acknowledge that the reviewer still found the game fun and funny, which suggests some redeeming qualities.

Negative

This game is amazing, first of all the game gave me: a permanent subsiding depression, cancer, multiple diseases, a stroke, tuberculosis, a permanent attraction to a fictional character called "Yuri", A broken finger from clicking too much in this shitty ass game, a permanent anxiety, made me even more antisocial and a broken humour... This games like dark souls 2 absolutely horrid, however none of the degenerates that play this game for 16,000 hours like Rail Gun won't understand what darksouls is or what any normal game is for a fact, the community page is full off nsfw, weird, horrid and just funny images. Still to this day I don't understand how this game is ranked higher in horror than Cry Of Fear, I lost all of my friends playing this game for 3 gruelling hours my family members are now horrified to even remotely look at me let alone call me, this game deserves to be in a dumpster fire or worse...

  • Sentiments

    • The game is described as amazing, which indicates a strong positive sentiment towards its overall quality.
    • The game is humorously blamed for causing a variety of exaggerated negative effects, such as depression, cancer, and a broken finger, which reflects a negative sentiment but in a sarcastic tone.
    • The game is compared unfavorably to Dark Souls 2, described as 'absolutely horrid,' which conveys a strong negative sentiment towards its gameplay or difficulty.
    • The community page is criticized for being full of NSFW, weird, and horrid images, indicating a negative sentiment towards the game's community.
    • The game is humorously blamed for causing a permanent attraction to a fictional character named 'Yuri,' which reflects a neutral sentiment with a humorous undertone.
    • The game is criticized for being ranked higher in horror than Cry of Fear, which conveys a negative sentiment towards its genre classification.
    • The game is blamed for causing the loss of friends and family members being horrified, which reflects a negative sentiment towards its impact on personal relationships.
    • The game is described as deserving to be in a 'dumpster fire or worse,' which conveys an extremely negative sentiment towards its overall quality.
    • The game is humorously blamed for making the player more antisocial and breaking their humor, which reflects a neutral sentiment with a humorous undertone.
    • The game is humorously blamed for causing a stroke and tuberculosis, which reflects a negative sentiment but in a sarcastic tone.

Negative

Probably just really not for me. It felt pointless and half the time it seemed like I was just stuck in a story-telling that I had no desire for. I'm in the minority here seeing as most people enjoyed it but I just never saw it as a game. All the time I kept thinking, someone could have just animated this, wrote a story about this, or the likes, and zero input was needed from me. I understand that there are many ways that the story could have progressed depending on the choices I make but it just didn't seem like that to me despite knowing all that.

  • Sentiments

    • I felt the game was pointless and lacked meaningful engagement, making it unenjoyable for me.
    • I often felt stuck in a story-telling experience that I had no desire to be part of.
    • I didn't see the game as a game but rather as something that could have been an animated story or written narrative.
    • I felt like my input was unnecessary, as the experience didn't require any meaningful interaction from me.
    • Despite knowing that the story could progress differently based on my choices, I didn't feel that impact during gameplay.
    • I recognize that I'm in the minority, as most people enjoyed the game, but it just didn't resonate with me.

Negative

While the game design is good and there are no faults with it. This game is not for everyone. In fact i suggest only those with strong wills or people with strong guts to play this to the end. For someone who struggles with mental health and has had past incidents with personal issues. This game is advertised as light hearted and while there is a small warning at the start, its not enough to warn people of what is to come. There needs to be more of a "Contains" warning on load and just visable more on the store and in game. I understand thats the design of the game but its a tough play through for those who aren't to know what happens.

  • Sentiments

    • I think the game design is good and there are no faults with it.
    • I believe this game is not for everyone and suggest only those with strong wills or guts play it to the end.
    • I feel the game is particularly challenging for someone who struggles with mental health or has had past personal issues.
    • I think the game is advertised as light-hearted, but the small warning at the start is not sufficient to prepare players for what is to come.
    • I believe there needs to be a more prominent 'Contains' warning on load, in the store, and in-game to better inform players.
    • I understand that the game's design is intentional, but it is a tough playthrough for those who are unaware of what happens.
