AI Review

Don’t Starve is a unique wilderness survival game blending adventure, simulation, and indie charm. With an AI Community Rating of 89.54%, it’s a fan-favorite for its dark, whimsical visuals and challenging gameplay. You play as Wilson, a Gentleman Scientist trapped in a mysterious world filled with strange creatures and dangers. Gather resources, craft tools, and survive in a randomly generated world that hates you. Fans praise its addictive gameplay, unique art style, and exploration depth, but some find the permadeath mechanics and resource grind frustrating. If you enjoy survival games with a steep learning curve and a touch of magic, Don’t Starve is worth the challenge.

What the community wishes

Improve crafting system usability
The crafting system should be updated to match Don't Starve Together, allowing players to type in what they want to craft instead of manually searching through menus.
Reduce grind for resources
The grind for resources feels excessive and discourages experimentation. Reducing resource scarcity or introducing more efficient gathering methods could improve the experience.
Add achievements for progression
Adding achievements like 'Survive 10 days' or 'Build your first fire' could provide players with clear goals and enhance motivation, especially for new players.
Balance permadeath mechanics
Permadeath can feel punishing and frustrating, especially after hours of progress. Introducing a more forgiving save system or checkpoints could make the game more accessible.
Update QoL features from DST
Quality-of-life improvements from Don't Starve Together, such as faster crafting and better search functionality, should be integrated into the single-player version.
Optimize performance for mods
The game experiences lag even with basic mods. Performance optimization, especially for modded gameplay, would greatly enhance the experience.
Add multiplayer to base game
While Don't Starve Together exists, integrating multiplayer into the base game would provide a more cohesive experience for players who enjoy both single-player and multiplayer modes.
Expand DLC content in DST
Shipwrecked and Hamlet DLCs are not available in Don't Starve Together. Adding these DLCs to the multiplayer version would enrich the content for DST players.
Improve sanity management mechanics
Sanity drains too quickly and is difficult to restore. Balancing sanity mechanics or introducing more reliable ways to manage it would improve gameplay.
Add more food source variety
Food sources are limited and often unreliable. Expanding food options and making farming more consistent would reduce frustration during survival.
Introduce more forgiving combat
Combat is punishing, especially against multiple enemies. Adding more combat options or balancing enemy difficulty would make encounters less overwhelming.
Add seasonal customization options
Allowing players to customize seasonal lengths or intensity would provide more control over the game's difficulty and pacing.
Improve tutorial for new players
The steep learning curve can deter new players. A more comprehensive tutorial or in-game guidance would help ease players into the mechanics.
Add more character backstory
Expanding on character lore and backstories would deepen the narrative and make the world feel more immersive.
Optimize world regeneration mechanics
World regeneration can feel inconsistent. Improving the mechanics to make regeneration more predictable or controllable would enhance replayability.
Add more endgame content
The game lacks meaningful endgame goals. Introducing more late-game challenges or objectives would keep players engaged after mastering survival.
Improve weather system balance
Weather effects like rain and winter can feel overly punishing. Balancing these mechanics or providing more ways to mitigate their impact would improve gameplay.
Add more creature interactions
Expanding interactions with creatures, such as taming or alliances, would add depth to the survival mechanics and exploration.
Introduce more crafting recipes
Adding more crafting recipes and hidden mechanics for items would increase the complexity and reward of the crafting system.
Improve lighting mechanics
Lighting mechanics, especially at night, can feel restrictive. Introducing more reliable or creative lighting options would enhance exploration and survival.

In-depth analysis of most impactful community reviews

Positive

Hands down, the absolute best, most addictive game I've ever played. The tension between having to explore in order to learn how to do new things and not wanting to die makes you actually care about each decision you make, and dying HURTS. Just don't look up "how to do stuff" on the internet, it will ruin the game for you. The whole point is to have to learn how to do things by yourself. And die trying. And curse a lot. And restart with great vengeance and furious anger.

  • Sentiments

    • I find this game to be the absolute best and most addictive game I've ever played, which makes me feel incredibly positive about it.
    • The tension between exploring to learn new things and avoiding death makes me care deeply about every decision I make, which I find thrilling and engaging.
    • Dying in the game feels impactful and painful, which adds a layer of intensity and emotional investment to the experience.
    • I strongly believe that looking up solutions online would ruin the game, as the core enjoyment comes from figuring things out on my own.
    • The process of learning how to do things by myself, even if it involves dying repeatedly, feels rewarding and satisfying.
    • Dying often leads to frustration and cursing, which I acknowledge as a negative but necessary part of the experience.
    • Restarting the game after dying fills me with a sense of determination and fierce motivation to succeed, which I find exhilarating.

Positive

Great fun, bit addictive. Have to delete it from my computer during uni semester. Shipwrecked DLC is my favourite. Even though it's a survival game it's quite calming and peaceful, feels like escaping the rat race to go live on a beautiful tropical island. Hamlet is great too but the amount of hours you need to put in to make your house nice and make everything work is too much for me. I am bad at video games so I like to play on easy mode, in this game you can customise how easy the easy mode is and in what ways is it easier. I mostly just give myself loads of extra berry bushes. And extra bees. Extra bees sounds bad but there are several benefits you will find out if you play this game. I love interacting with the monkeys, and building my little camp in the sand and protecting myself from the world outside.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game to be great fun and a bit addictive, to the point where I have to delete it from my computer during my university semester to avoid distraction.
    • The Shipwrecked DLC is my favorite part of the game, as it feels calming and peaceful, like escaping the rat race to live on a beautiful tropical island.
    • I enjoy the Hamlet DLC, but I feel the amount of time required to make your house nice and make everything work is too much for me.
    • I appreciate that the game allows me to customize the difficulty level, especially since I prefer playing on easy mode.
    • I like to give myself extra berry bushes and bees in easy mode, which I find beneficial and enjoyable.
    • I love interacting with the monkeys in the game, as it adds a fun and engaging element to the experience.
    • Building my little camp in the sand and protecting myself from the outside world is a satisfying and immersive aspect of the game.
    • I feel the game is calming and peaceful, which contrasts with the typical survival game experience and makes it unique.
    • I acknowledge that I am not very skilled at video games, so the customizable easy mode is a great feature for me.
    • While I enjoy the game, I find the time investment required for certain aspects, like the Hamlet DLC, to be overwhelming.

Positive

It's easy to pick up and put down- I am not good at videogames, this isn't an exception, but it's fun to play, and losing can be AWFUL but it lets me learn to take risks, and thats been helping me over all bc i play games cautiously- you can't always do that and I need to be pushed out of that zone- I like this game for that. I can take risks and Lose, but it helps me prepare for that the next time. each time I play, I can try and use how I lost last time to try and avoid that outcome. It's predictable enough, and plenty of times it still shakes you up. it's really fun!

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game easy to pick up and put down, which makes it accessible and enjoyable for someone like me who isn't good at video games.
    • The game is fun to play, and even though I'm not good at it, I still enjoy the experience.
    • Losing in the game can feel awful, but it teaches me to take risks, which is something I need to improve on.
    • The game pushes me out of my cautious playstyle, which is a positive challenge for me.
    • I appreciate that the game allows me to take risks and lose, as it helps me learn and prepare for future attempts.
    • Each time I play, I use my previous losses to avoid similar outcomes, which makes the game feel rewarding and strategic.
    • The game is predictable enough to learn from, but it still manages to surprise and challenge me at times.
    • Overall, the game is really fun and provides a satisfying learning experience.

Positive

This is a game you play constantly being on the knifes edge. Despite what you may think from other games like this, there is no real safety. You are always one mistake away from getting killed. Lets say we're talking about food, you start off getting lots of it from berry bushes, but use them once, they don't respawn berries for a long time and then you have to look further for more. Build farms, well, those are only good during farming seasons and they don't produce a lot. Fishing is good for a bit, but suddenly the frogs hate you and ten of them start guarding the fishing ponds. Bottom line, there is no one solution to food in this game. You have to use many sources of food, especially in winter. And food expires pretty damn fast. Then there's sanity. This is the demon of the game. It is constantly being drained by everything. Get wet during the rain, it goes down. Get too close to an evil flower, it goes down. Get hit by a monster, it goes down. Eat the wrong food, in the wrong condition, it goes down. And there is no really good way to make it go up. Then there's combat. You are bad at it. The character can easily be overwhelmed by too many foes at once. There are things you can do to reduce the damage a combat encounter does. Techniques you can use to navigate each enemy, but once again, it's on the knifes edge. There's items for combat, but those have limited durability and they're really hard to replace. And the game constantly harasses you. Weather it's the thing lurking in the dark waiting for your light to go out or the weekly attack from the hounds. You have to set up for a lot of things, but when you're being chased by things, it's hard to build a campfire for the night. Even if you have a campfire, more things will appear every night and try to snuff out the fire. God help you if your sanity finally drains low enough. Then all hell breaks loose.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game constantly keeps me on edge, with no real sense of safety, as one mistake can lead to death.
    • I find the food system challenging and frustrating, as resources like berry bushes and farms are unreliable, and food expires quickly.
    • I think the sanity mechanic is overly punishing, as it drains constantly from various actions and is difficult to restore.
    • I feel that combat is difficult and unbalanced, as the character is easily overwhelmed and combat items are hard to replace.
    • I find the game's constant harassment from threats like darkness and hound attacks to be stressful and overwhelming.
    • I appreciate the game's complexity and the need to use multiple strategies for survival, such as managing food sources and combat techniques.
    • I think the game's mechanics, like the limited durability of items and seasonal challenges, add depth and realism to the survival experience.
    • I feel that the game's atmosphere is intense and immersive, with threats like lurking darkness and sanity-induced chaos creating a sense of dread.
    • I find the game's difficulty to be a double-edged sword, as it is rewarding to overcome challenges but often feels unfair or punishing.
    • I think the game's design encourages strategic thinking and adaptability, which makes it engaging despite its frustrations.

Negative

I'm going to break the mold a little bit and leave an honestly-negative review. I really enjoy challenging open-world (ish) survival RPGs, but this title, while endearing and interesting, was just far too annoying. Mildly punishing, sure, and I know that it requires a careful, time-learned balance to increase survivability, but...all of the various cycles and gameplay mechanics just felt tedious and I had a hard time determining what should keep me engaged. I am fairly critical of cartoon or cut-out graphics, but these were actually quite enjoyable - I genuinely appreciated the art style and design. I also appreciate it when the world is "out to get me" as it provides a level of challenge that warrants respect for the mechanics; however, some games (like this one) forget to give players something/enough to pull them inward and onward. Potentially fun alone - or even the version that allows multiplayer (I've tried both) - Don't Starve ultimately fell too flat and frustrating for my preferences; your mileage will likely vary. According to the development team and the community, it appears to be a wonderful and complete survival title, and I think I can somewhat appreciate why and/or how; perhaps this review is merely one more reminder that that even well-loved titles like this one won't be enjoyable to everyone.

This game is impossible to play without consulting wiki all the time, it is designed like that. There is also permadeath (can be disabled by mods though). It gets tedious and boring pretty quick unless you spend countless hours learning how to be more efficient. It has some great concepts, and it could be easily 10/10 game for me because i love survival games, but it is just too much of a hassle to learn it.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game impossible to play without constantly consulting a wiki, which feels like a design flaw.
    • The game includes permadeath, which can be frustrating, though it can be disabled with mods.
    • I feel the game becomes tedious and boring quickly unless I invest countless hours to learn how to be more efficient.
    • I appreciate the game's great concepts and potential, as it aligns with my love for survival games.
    • I believe the game could easily be a 10/10 for me if it weren't for the excessive hassle of learning its mechanics.

Negative

There's many fun elements to this game but the "uncompromising" elements means you just keep having to restart over and over again, which feels like a waste of time. This would be a lot of funner if it was more balanced, rather than small mistakes resulting in death / starting over / losing hours of progress. It's just not a game I'd want to invest a significant amount of time in, knowing that at any moment I have to start over from scratch.

  • Sentiments

    • I find many fun elements in this game, which makes it enjoyable to play.
    • The 'uncompromising' elements of the game feel frustrating because they force me to restart repeatedly.
    • Restarting over and over again feels like a waste of time, which diminishes my enjoyment.
    • I believe the game would be more fun if it were more balanced and forgiving.
    • Small mistakes leading to death or losing hours of progress feel unfair and discouraging.
    • I don't want to invest significant time in the game because of the constant risk of starting over from scratch.

Negative

I love the artwork, the vibe of the world, and the thoughtfulness that was put into creating this game. But sadly that isn't enough for me. The grind for resources, frequency of unfortunate events in the world, and the permadeath make me very cautious to try new things. The consequence of not surviving and then having to replay hours of the game, are just too much for me. I will have to check if this can be fixed with mods, but until then I cannot recommend this game.

  • Sentiments

    • I love the artwork in the game, which adds a lot of visual appeal and enhances the overall experience.
    • I appreciate the vibe of the world, which feels immersive and well-crafted.
    • I admire the thoughtfulness that went into creating the game, as it shows a lot of care and attention to detail.
    • I find the grind for resources to be tedious and frustrating, which detracts from my enjoyment of the game.
    • I dislike the frequency of unfortunate events in the world, as they make the gameplay feel overly punishing.
    • I am very cautious to try new things due to the permadeath mechanic, which adds a lot of pressure and fear of failure.
    • I find the consequence of not surviving and having to replay hours of the game to be too much of a burden.
    • I am considering checking if mods can fix some of the issues I have with the game, as I want to enjoy it more.
    • I cannot recommend the game in its current state due to the frustrating mechanics and high stakes.

Negative

I really wanted to like this game, but I just can't stand death simulators. It could have been so cool if it didn't have perma death. There is also the problem that this game is not friendly to older players - waaaay too much clicking. Your hands and wrists will be screaming in pain. I liked the art and mechanics, but the game-play is just too unforgiving.
