Don’t Starve is a unique wilderness survival game blending adventure, simulation, and indie charm. With an AI Community Rating of 89.54%, it’s a fan-favorite for its dark, whimsical visuals and challenging gameplay. You play as Wilson, a Gentleman Scientist trapped in a mysterious world filled with strange creatures and dangers. Gather resources, craft tools, and survive in a randomly generated world that hates you. Fans praise its addictive gameplay, unique art style, and exploration depth, but some find the permadeath mechanics and resource grind frustrating. If you enjoy survival games with a steep learning curve and a touch of magic, Don’t Starve is worth the challenge.
Hands down, the absolute best, most addictive game I've ever played. The tension between having to explore in order to learn how to do new things and not wanting to die makes you actually care about each decision you make, and dying HURTS. Just don't look up "how to do stuff" on the internet, it will ruin the game for you. The whole point is to have to learn how to do things by yourself. And die trying. And curse a lot. And restart with great vengeance and furious anger.

Great fun, bit addictive. Have to delete it from my computer during uni semester. Shipwrecked DLC is my favourite. Even though it's a survival game it's quite calming and peaceful, feels like escaping the rat race to go live on a beautiful tropical island. Hamlet is great too but the amount of hours you need to put in to make your house nice and make everything work is too much for me. I am bad at video games so I like to play on easy mode, in this game you can customise how easy the easy mode is and in what ways is it easier. I mostly just give myself loads of extra berry bushes. And extra bees. Extra bees sounds bad but there are several benefits you will find out if you play this game. I love interacting with the monkeys, and building my little camp in the sand and protecting myself from the world outside.
It's easy to pick up and put down- I am not good at videogames, this isn't an exception, but it's fun to play, and losing can be AWFUL but it lets me learn to take risks, and thats been helping me over all bc i play games cautiously- you can't always do that and I need to be pushed out of that zone- I like this game for that. I can take risks and Lose, but it helps me prepare for that the next time. each time I play, I can try and use how I lost last time to try and avoid that outcome. It's predictable enough, and plenty of times it still shakes you up. it's really fun!
This is a game you play constantly being on the knifes edge. Despite what you may think from other games like this, there is no real safety. You are always one mistake away from getting killed. Lets say we're talking about food, you start off getting lots of it from berry bushes, but use them once, they don't respawn berries for a long time and then you have to look further for more. Build farms, well, those are only good during farming seasons and they don't produce a lot. Fishing is good for a bit, but suddenly the frogs hate you and ten of them start guarding the fishing ponds. Bottom line, there is no one solution to food in this game. You have to use many sources of food, especially in winter. And food expires pretty damn fast. Then there's sanity. This is the demon of the game. It is constantly being drained by everything. Get wet during the rain, it goes down. Get too close to an evil flower, it goes down. Get hit by a monster, it goes down. Eat the wrong food, in the wrong condition, it goes down. And there is no really good way to make it go up. Then there's combat. You are bad at it. The character can easily be overwhelmed by too many foes at once. There are things you can do to reduce the damage a combat encounter does. Techniques you can use to navigate each enemy, but once again, it's on the knifes edge. There's items for combat, but those have limited durability and they're really hard to replace. And the game constantly harasses you. Weather it's the thing lurking in the dark waiting for your light to go out or the weekly attack from the hounds. You have to set up for a lot of things, but when you're being chased by things, it's hard to build a campfire for the night. Even if you have a campfire, more things will appear every night and try to snuff out the fire. God help you if your sanity finally drains low enough. Then all hell breaks loose.
I'm going to break the mold a little bit and leave an honestly-negative review. I really enjoy challenging open-world (ish) survival RPGs, but this title, while endearing and interesting, was just far too annoying. Mildly punishing, sure, and I know that it requires a careful, time-learned balance to increase survivability, but...all of the various cycles and gameplay mechanics just felt tedious and I had a hard time determining what should keep me engaged. I am fairly critical of cartoon or cut-out graphics, but these were actually quite enjoyable - I genuinely appreciated the art style and design. I also appreciate it when the world is "out to get me" as it provides a level of challenge that warrants respect for the mechanics; however, some games (like this one) forget to give players something/enough to pull them inward and onward. Potentially fun alone - or even the version that allows multiplayer (I've tried both) - Don't Starve ultimately fell too flat and frustrating for my preferences; your mileage will likely vary. According to the development team and the community, it appears to be a wonderful and complete survival title, and I think I can somewhat appreciate why and/or how; perhaps this review is merely one more reminder that that even well-loved titles like this one won't be enjoyable to everyone.
This game is impossible to play without consulting wiki all the time, it is designed like that. There is also permadeath (can be disabled by mods though). It gets tedious and boring pretty quick unless you spend countless hours learning how to be more efficient. It has some great concepts, and it could be easily 10/10 game for me because i love survival games, but it is just too much of a hassle to learn it.
There's many fun elements to this game but the "uncompromising" elements means you just keep having to restart over and over again, which feels like a waste of time. This would be a lot of funner if it was more balanced, rather than small mistakes resulting in death / starting over / losing hours of progress. It's just not a game I'd want to invest a significant amount of time in, knowing that at any moment I have to start over from scratch.
I love the artwork, the vibe of the world, and the thoughtfulness that was put into creating this game. But sadly that isn't enough for me. The grind for resources, frequency of unfortunate events in the world, and the permadeath make me very cautious to try new things. The consequence of not surviving and then having to replay hours of the game, are just too much for me. I will have to check if this can be fixed with mods, but until then I cannot recommend this game.
I really wanted to like this game, but I just can't stand death simulators. It could have been so cool if it didn't have perma death. There is also the problem that this game is not friendly to older players - waaaay too much clicking. Your hands and wrists will be screaming in pain. I liked the art and mechanics, but the game-play is just too unforgiving.
