What the community wishes

Add colorblind mode for accessibility
The game lacks a colorblind mode, making it difficult for colorblind players to distinguish enemy shots and bouncing projectiles. Adding a simple black and white border to enemy shots would significantly improve accessibility.
Improve early-game pacing
The early game feels slow and unmotivating, with underwhelming weapons and a lack of challenge. Speeding up the pacing or improving early-game weapon variety could make runs more engaging from the start.
Balance weapon drop rates
Weapon drop rates are too low, leading to runs with underwhelming builds. Increasing the frequency of viable weapon drops could make runs feel more rewarding and less reliant on RNG.
Add easier difficulty option
The game is too difficult for casual players, discouraging those without prior experience in bullet hell or roguelike games. Adding an easier difficulty mode could make the game more accessible.
Improve co-op camera mechanics
In co-op mode, the camera follows one player, making it hard for the other player to see their character or aim. Zooming out to fit the entire room would improve the co-op experience.
Expand modding support
The modding scene addresses some of the game's missed potential. Expanding official modding support and tools could enhance replayability and community engagement.
Reduce boss bullet sponge effect
Bosses often feel like bullet sponges, especially with underwhelming weapons. Adjusting boss health or damage scaling could make fights feel more balanced and less tedious.
Add crossplay for co-op
Co-op mode lacks crossplay functionality, limiting multiplayer options. Adding crossplay support would make it easier for players to enjoy the game together across platforms.
Improve item unlock progression
Unlocking new items feels too slow and obscure, discouraging new players. Streamlining the unlock process or providing clearer progression goals could improve player retention.
Add more visual clarity
The game's visual effects can be overwhelming, especially during chaotic moments. Adding clearer visual indicators for enemy attacks and player actions would improve gameplay clarity.
Introduce save mid-run feature
Runs can be long, and players may need to pause mid-run. Adding a save-and-quit feature for mid-run progress would make the game more accommodating for players with limited time.
Expand lore and story depth
The game has some lore but lacks deeper storytelling. Expanding the narrative and integrating it more into gameplay could enhance immersion and player engagement.
Improve tutorial for new players
The learning curve is steep, and new players may feel overwhelmed. Adding a more comprehensive tutorial or beginner-friendly tips could help ease players into the game.
Balance challenge mode costs
Challenge mode requires in-game currency, which feels restrictive. Removing or reducing the cost for challenge modes would make them more accessible to players.
Add more character variety
The starting characters feel too similar, limiting replayability. Introducing more distinct abilities or playstyles for each character could add variety and depth to runs.
Optimize performance for lower-end devices
The game struggles to run smoothly on lower-end devices like Raspberry Pi. Optimizing performance for a wider range of hardware would make the game more accessible.
Increase weapon synergy variety
While the game has many weapons, some synergies feel underwhelming. Adding more unique and impactful weapon combinations could make runs feel more dynamic and exciting.
Add more post-game content
After completing the main game, there's limited post-game content. Adding more challenges, secrets, or endgame activities would extend the game's longevity.
Improve enemy attack patterns
Some enemy attack patterns feel unfair or overly punishing. Adjusting these patterns to feel more balanced and learnable would improve the overall difficulty curve.
Add more accessibility options
Beyond colorblind mode, the game could benefit from additional accessibility options, such as adjustable difficulty sliders or customizable controls, to cater to a wider audience.

Positive

I only 100% games I absolutely love. Enter the Gungeon is one of those games. Honestly, not that hard for a roguelike bullethell (speaking as somebody who has sunk nearly 1000 hours into games like Isaac), but immensely fun. I almost feel like this has a better pin on the fun/accessible balance level than games like Isaac (which, again, I have sunk nearly 1000 hours into). I am not saying the game is easy, but getting a viable run going seems like less of a crap shoot, or at least something that can be discerned pretty early into a run. I love moving in this game. I love shooting in this game. I love having fun with this game. You will almost certainly need to look up guides to 100% the game because finding some secrets requires either a lot of persistence or a lot of help. However, having fun is something anyone can do without much help (again, speaking as somebody who put almost 1000 hours into Isaac). TLDR: If you like Binding of Isaac, buy this game. If you like this game, play Binding of Isaac. If you don't like either, then we can't be friends.

  • Sentiments

    • I absolutely love Enter the Gungeon and consider it one of the games I would 100% complete, which is a rare honor for me.
    • I find Enter the Gungeon to be immensely fun, even though it is not as hard as other roguelike bullethell games I have played.
    • I feel that Enter the Gungeon strikes a better balance between fun and accessibility compared to games like Binding of Isaac.
    • I do not think the game is easy, but I appreciate that getting a viable run feels less random and more discernible early on.
    • I love the movement mechanics in Enter the Gungeon, which adds to my enjoyment of the game.
    • I love the shooting mechanics in Enter the Gungeon, which makes the gameplay very satisfying.
    • I believe that anyone can have fun with Enter the Gungeon without needing much help, even though some secrets require guides to uncover.
    • I recommend Enter the Gungeon to fans of Binding of Isaac, as I see similarities and enjoy both games immensely.
    • I acknowledge that finding some secrets in the game requires persistence or external help, which might be a challenge for some players.
    • I jokingly state that if someone does not like either Enter the Gungeon or Binding of Isaac, we cannot be friends, emphasizing my strong preference for these games.

Positive

Genuinely the best Roguelike ever made, sure there are rivals but nothing plays like Gungeon, progresses like Gungeon, or hooks you and gives you a reason to stay like Gungeon. Worst part about the game was playing it as my first Roguelike, nothing else competes. Got 100% completion after 200 hours and it was fun every second, fantastic modding scene too. Do yourself a favor, play this game. You'll have yourself wanting to kill your past so you could've played it sooner. 10/10.

  • Sentiments

    • I genuinely believe this is the best Roguelike ever made, as nothing else compares to Gungeon in terms of gameplay, progression, and engagement.
    • I feel that the worst part about the game was playing it as my first Roguelike, because it set such a high standard that nothing else could compete.
    • I achieved 100% completion after 200 hours and found every second of it to be fun and enjoyable.
    • I appreciate the fantastic modding scene, which adds even more value and replayability to the game.
    • I strongly recommend playing this game, as it is an experience that will make you wish you had discovered it sooner.
    • I rate this game a perfect 10/10, as it exceeded all my expectations and delivered an unforgettable experience.

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

  • Sentiments

    • I felt a sense of joy and connection when I started playing the game with my son, as it was the best time I had spent with him since my wife passed away.
    • I initially felt frustrated and stuck when I first started playing the game because I didn’t know what to do.
    • I was concerned and saddened by how much time my son spent playing the game, as it made it harder for me to spend time with him.
    • I felt motivated and hopeful when I decided to create a Steam account and play the game to bond with my son.
    • I experienced happiness and gratitude when my son helped me join his game, which brought us closer together.
    • I felt a renewed sense of fun and enjoyment in life, as the game reminded me that there’s fun to be had in everything.
    • I felt a deep sense of fulfillment and connection as the game helped me and my son create many happy memories together.
    • I felt a sense of relief and joy when the game not only brought us closer in-game but also encouraged us to spend time together outside the house.
    • I felt a sense of loss and loneliness before playing the game, as it was hard to find ways to connect with my son.
    • I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment in taking the initiative to play the game and rebuild my relationship with my son.

Positive

This game is a true 10/10. A masterpiece in the true sense. I keep coming back to it over and over again throughout the years. The ageless art style, the ridiculous yet deep lore, the crisp recognizable sounds, the snappy gunplay, the number of characters/guns/items/SECRETS (and symbiotic combinations of all mentioned!)... I can't name it all in one review. All in all combined I have played this game for over 200 hours for sure, and I will probably play that much more still, since I have yet to defeat the actual boss boss (no spoilers :)) and unlock everything. The game is a true work of art and a rare gem in a sea of mediocracy.

  • Sentiments

    • I believe this game is a true 10/10 and a masterpiece in every sense.
    • I keep coming back to this game over and over again throughout the years, which shows its lasting appeal.
    • I admire the ageless art style, which adds to the game's timeless quality.
    • I find the lore to be ridiculous yet deep, making the game world intriguing and engaging.
    • I appreciate the crisp and recognizable sounds, which enhance the overall gaming experience.
    • I enjoy the snappy gunplay, which makes the gameplay feel responsive and satisfying.
    • I am impressed by the number of characters, guns, items, and secrets, as well as their symbiotic combinations, which add depth and replayability.
    • I have played this game for over 200 hours and still feel motivated to play more, indicating its high replay value.
    • I consider this game a true work of art and a rare gem in a sea of mediocrity, highlighting its exceptional quality.
    • I have yet to defeat the actual boss boss and unlock everything, which keeps me engaged and eager to continue playing.

Negative

Enter the Gungeon is one of those games that looks really good from the outside. It has some detailed pixel graphics that just looks good, a killer soundtrack and it's pretty fun when the game actually picks up speed. However the more I sunk my teeth into this game, the more I've just felt disappointed. I first played Gungeon back in 2016 but it didn't really click for me, and returning to see why eight years later it makes sense for me. Any singular run takes far too long to actually get going, the early game of any run is both a slog to get through and isn't particularly challenging. In most roguelikes when I die I go "just one more run...", in Gungeon when I spawn back into the first floor I just feel unmotivated to try again. And this is where the problems with the game rears its head - there are many weapons in the game that are extremely underwhelming and take up quite a good chunk of the weapon pool, especially early on. I've had a lot of bad builds that I just didn't want to see through, and this can be attributed to enemies and especially bosses being bullet sponges. It's hard to want to follow through on a run with an underwhelming loadout, which was far too common. Now better weapons can be progressively unlocked, but with the obscurity/time it takes to continually get more unlocks is an even deeper timesink. For those that really LOVE Gungeon maybe it's not too bad, I don't know. But it's very discouraging to start out with. At the end of the day this is a flawed roguelike where there were better options even when this game came out. I feel EtG's success can be attributed to solid presentation. Once a run actually gets going it can be pretty fun, there's a ton of cool references with weapons and there are a few good things to enjoy about this game. This isn't a bad game necessarily, but it could certainly be so much better.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that Enter the Gungeon has detailed pixel graphics that look really good, which is a strong positive aspect of the game.
    • I think the soundtrack is killer and adds a lot to the overall experience of the game.
    • I find the early game of any run to be a slog to get through and not particularly challenging, which makes it less engaging.
    • I feel unmotivated to try again when I spawn back into the first floor after dying, which is a significant drawback for me.
    • I believe many weapons in the game are extremely underwhelming, especially early on, which negatively impacts the gameplay experience.
    • I think enemies and bosses being bullet sponges makes it hard to want to follow through on a run with an underwhelming loadout.
    • I feel that the obscurity and time it takes to progressively unlock better weapons is a deep timesink, which is discouraging for new players.
    • I acknowledge that once a run actually gets going, it can be pretty fun, which is a redeeming quality of the game.
    • I appreciate the ton of cool references with weapons, which adds a layer of enjoyment to the game.
    • I believe Enter the Gungeon is a flawed roguelike where there were better options even when this game came out, which is a neutral observation about its place in the genre.

Negative

I can't say that i'm a fan of it. Game is really polished and rich in content, with decent enough gameplay. Just a few problems. The game is insanely hard, runs are fairly long and drop rates for items is really low. So I just keep dying without feeling like I have made any sort of interesting character build. Many other difficult rougelikes are much easier than this. I just dont have the patience for it. Yes, it is a skill issue. But tbh there should be a slightly easier mode. I just dont have the skill and dedication required. My obsession is FPS RPG hybrids, not stuff like this. If you have played alot of games similar to this, and is very experienced in this type of gameplay, you should definitely get this game. You wont be bothered by the afforementioned issues as you will power through everything with sheer skill alone.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is really polished and rich in content, which makes it enjoyable and well-made.
    • I think the gameplay is decent enough, which makes it somewhat satisfying to play.
    • I find the game insanely hard, which makes it frustrating and discouraging to play.
    • I feel that the runs are fairly long, which makes the game feel tedious and time-consuming.
    • I think the drop rates for items are really low, which makes progression feel unrewarding and slow.
    • I keep dying without feeling like I have made any sort of interesting character build, which makes the game feel unrewarding and repetitive.
    • I believe many other difficult roguelikes are much easier than this, which makes this game feel unnecessarily punishing.
    • I don't have the patience for the game, which makes it feel like it's not suited for my playstyle or preferences.
    • I think there should be a slightly easier mode, as the current difficulty feels inaccessible for players like me.
    • I feel that if you are experienced in this type of gameplay, you will enjoy the game and power through its challenges with skill.

Negative

Desperately needs a colorblind mode. Upon further review, this game kinda sucks without a colorblind mode. I can't tell who's shots are who's with some of the challenge modifiers and several items provide bouncing shots that make it impossible for me to discern what's happening and what I need to dodge. Adding a simple black and white border to enemy shots would easily fix this issue.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game desperately needs a colorblind mode, as it significantly impacts my ability to play effectively.
    • I find the game frustrating without a colorblind mode, as I cannot distinguish between different players' shots.
    • I struggle to understand what is happening during gameplay due to the lack of visual clarity for colorblind players.
    • I believe adding a simple black and white border to enemy shots would greatly improve the game's accessibility.
    • I find some challenge modifiers and bouncing shots impossible to navigate due to the lack of colorblind support.
    • I feel that the game's design overlooks the needs of colorblind players, making it less enjoyable for me.

Negative

Enter the Gungeon just ain't for me. Combining having health related issues with my hands and the difficulty to be found within this game, this simply isn't a fun title for someone like myself. I do love the aesthetic, music and general vibe though. It's the gameplay that isn't appealing to myself.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game's aesthetic, music, and general vibe to be enjoyable and appealing.
    • The gameplay of Enter the Gungeon is not appealing to me due to its difficulty and my health-related hand issues.
    • The combination of my health issues and the game's difficulty makes it an unfun experience for me.
    • I appreciate the overall atmosphere and style of the game, even though I don't enjoy playing it.
    • The difficulty level of the game is a significant barrier for me, making it hard to enjoy.

Negative

A fun game to waste time on, but as far as RNG based games go it's not the best. Intentionally hard mechanics such as: certain active items not working against bosses, high prices for items while making currency drops very low etc. This would not be an issue if the runs would be fun, but they simply aren't. There is rarely a time where the boring slog runs are balanced out by OP runs. You might get a gun that does something slightly different than the other guns, but probably not. More likely you get another passive item that does nothing tangible and end the game because the role mechanic wasn't as tight as it's led to believe. A fun game to buy on sale and play for a little bit though.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game fun to waste time on, which is a positive aspect of the experience.
    • I feel that the game is not the best among RNG-based games, which is a negative sentiment.
    • I am frustrated by intentionally hard mechanics, such as certain active items not working against bosses, which feels unfair.
    • I dislike the high prices for items combined with low currency drops, making progression feel unbalanced.
    • I find the runs in the game to be boring and not fun, which is a major downside.
    • I rarely experience runs that feel overpowered or exciting, which makes the gameplay monotonous.
    • I feel that the guns and items often lack meaningful variety or impact, which reduces the enjoyment.
    • I think the game is worth buying on sale and playing for a short time, which is a neutral sentiment.
    • I believe the role mechanic is not as tight or effective as it is advertised, which is disappointing.
    • I find the game to be a fun, short-term experience, but not something I would play extensively.
