AI Review

Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) is a thrilling co-op action horror FPS set in a zombie apocalypse, offering an intense survival experience with friends or solo. With an AI Community Rating of 88.94%, this sequel to the award-winning Left 4 Dead takes you through five expansive campaigns across the Deep South, from Savannah to New Orleans. Armed with over 20 weapons, including melee options like chainsaws and frying pans, you’ll face hordes of infected, including terrifying Special Infected and unique 'uncommon' zombies. The AI Director 2.0 dynamically adjusts gameplay, ensuring no two playthroughs are the same. Players praise its replayability, mod support, and fun co-op gameplay, but some criticize its repetitive nature and toxic Versus mode community. Despite occasional bugs and server issues, L4D2 remains a must-play for fans of action-packed, team-based survival games.

What the community wishes

Fix persistent Source engine bugs
The game suffers from Source engine bugs, including map glitches, hitbox issues, and crashes. These are exacerbated by modding. Developers should address these legacy engine limitations to improve stability and performance.
Improve AI teammate intelligence
The AI teammates are poorly designed, especially in Versus mode. They are barely helpful and often frustrating. Adding better AI behavior or integrating community-made bot mod fixes would enhance solo play.
Allow custom install directory
Players cannot change the game's installation directory, which is inconvenient. Adding this feature would improve user flexibility and storage management.
Address modded server issues
Modded servers often have poor quality, including unnecessary AFK kicking and lag. Developers should enforce better server standards or provide tools for players to filter out low-quality servers.
Fix DDoS and server stability
The game is plagued by DDoS attacks and unstable servers, making it unplayable for many. Valve needs to address these security and server issues to restore player trust.
Add progress bookmarking in campaigns
The game does not save campaign progress between sessions, forcing players to manually track their progress. Adding a bookmarking or checkpoint system would improve the user experience.
Optimize for modern hardware
The game is not optimized for modern processors and monitors. Adding launch options and settings for Hyper-Threading and refresh rates would improve performance and compatibility.
Improve Steam Remote Play support
Steam Remote Play Together does not work with the game, limiting co-op play. Fixing this integration would enhance accessibility for remote players.
Enhance solo play experience
Solo play with bots is tedious and lacks tension. Improving AI behavior and adding more engaging mechanics for solo players would make the experience more enjoyable.
Address repetitive gameplay
The gameplay can feel repetitive, especially in single-player mode. Adding more varied objectives or dynamic events could reduce monotony and increase replayability.
Fix official server issues
Official servers often behave unpredictably, making them unplayable. Improving server stability and performance should be a priority for Valve.
Add more varied environments
Many levels are dark and oppressive, lacking visual variety. Introducing more diverse and interesting environments would enhance the game's atmosphere and appeal.
Improve Versus mode community
The Versus mode community is toxic, deterring new players. Implementing better moderation tools or incentives for positive behavior could improve the community experience.
Add mod filtering options
Players often join heavily modded servers unintentionally. Adding region and mod filtering options would help players avoid unwanted servers and improve matchmaking.
Address excessive infected spawns
Some players report excessive infected spawns, making levels unplayable. Balancing spawn rates and difficulty would improve gameplay fairness and enjoyment.
Improve story integration
The story is minimal and serves only as a backdrop. Adding more narrative depth and integration with gameplay could enhance immersion and player engagement.
Add more dynamic events
The game relies heavily on scripted events. Introducing more dynamic, player-driven events would increase replayability and unpredictability.
Optimize for Steam Deck
While the game is Steam Deck verified, some controls could be improved for better compatibility. Enhancing Steam Deck support would attract more players.
Address modded server toxicity
Modded servers often have toxic players and poor moderation. Implementing stricter server guidelines and moderation tools would improve the overall experience.
Add more customization options
Players want more customization options for gameplay and visuals. Adding more modding tools or in-game customization features would enhance player creativity and satisfaction.

Positive

While I am not a L4D2 fan I can recomment this game. (I will be edting this a few times) The game in general has enough options you can use, more guns more infected and SI. For a normal vanilla game L4D2 is nice, still I prefer L4D1, the gameplay, smoothnes and the time spend when Turtle Rocks was making it, in L4D2 that is not the case. L4D2 is full of bugs, and when you start modding you will notice them even more, even if you mod a server for just 4 players to make it more interesting.

  • Sentiments

    • I can recommend this game even though I am not a fan of L4D2.
    • The game offers a variety of options, including more guns, infected, and Special Infected (SI).
    • For a normal vanilla game, L4D2 is nice and enjoyable.
    • I prefer L4D1 over L4D2 due to its gameplay, smoothness, and the time spent by Turtle Rock Studios during its development.
    • L4D2 lacks the same level of polish and attention as L4D1, which affects my overall preference.
    • L4D2 is full of bugs, which can be frustrating for players.
    • Modding the game makes the bugs even more noticeable, even in small-scale server setups.

The second game I ever bought on Steam back in 2013 with my friend. We’re no longer friends and don’t talk to each other anymore, but every now and then, I launch the game and it reminds me how much fun we had back then.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel nostalgic and sentimental when I launch the game, as it reminds me of the fun times I had with my friend back in 2013.
    • I feel a sense of loss and sadness because my friend and I are no longer in contact, even though we used to share great memories.
    • I appreciate the game for being a lasting reminder of the joy and connection I once experienced with my friend.
    • I feel a bittersweet mix of emotions when playing the game, as it brings back both happy memories and the reality of a lost friendship.
    • I value the game for its ability to evoke strong emotions and memories, even though the context of those memories has changed over time.

This game is a classic on Valve games, and in the gaming industry in general, It's one of the most fun and entertaining zombie apocalypse games form all times, it's already quite old but to this day, it's a game that manages to be alive in full force. Pros: - Fun gameplay with humor chats and scenes. - Playing with friends makes the game double the fun. - Plenty of unique gamemodes that make you waste countless hours digging trough each. - An active workshop community that, to this day, continues to upload fun new content for players to enjoy. - Iconic fun and lovely characters with iconic voicelines - Amazingly well written story. - Lots of realism in terms of map designing, character designs, and much more. - Good game to pass time and relax. - Really imersive soundtracks. - Full of lil' easter eggs to other Valve games that I find are pretty awesome. Bads: - Source engine bugs can be found on various aspects, I can't really blame the developers, the source engine is really old and for the time it was made it was indeed a brilliantly constructed game engine that others couldn't replicate. • The bugs are normally map bugs, hitbox bugs and also some annoying crashes that I imagine are related to installed workshop mods but I'm still listing them here. - The Human AI is absolutely terrible, barely helpful especially on versus. My advice is to always have a bot mod fix script installed, there's various on the workshop made by the community. - Cannot change the game's install directory. (WTF???...) - Modded servers are absolute trash, can't even go Idle when i need to go AFK without it "kicking me in X seconds". All you modded server owners need to shut your trash down honestly. No one will miss your servers. • The game suffers from Source engine bugs, including map bugs, hitbox bugs, and occasional crashes, which can be frustrating.

Negative

The game is fine. but targeted ddos attacks and list of players to hold on a ddos list isn't fine. once shit like this gets taken down/fixed. I cannot recommend the game unless you want to make your own server which i would recommend look up source mod for custom server plugins or get the server plugins from the workshop. good luck hope that you wont be as unlucky as me and gotten targeted for years.(for defending myself.) I'm not racist nor do ever plan to be that's just MICROdick energy. I don't harass or troll people. but i know someone that does and is lol. get.em.gone.👉❤Señorita Magnum❤

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game itself is fine, but the issues with targeted DDoS attacks and the existence of a DDoS list are unacceptable.
    • I cannot recommend the game in its current state due to the ongoing issues with DDoS attacks and player targeting.
    • I suggest creating your own server and using custom server plugins from SourceMod or the workshop to avoid these problems.
    • I hope others are not as unlucky as I have been, being targeted for years simply for defending myself.
    • I want to clarify that I am not racist and do not engage in harassment or trolling, but I know someone who does.
    • I find the behavior of those who engage in harassment and trolling to be immature and reflective of 'MICROdick energy.'
    • I express frustration with the lack of action to address the DDoS issues, which has made the game unplayable for me.
    • I recommend looking into custom server solutions as a workaround to enjoy the game without interference.
    • I feel that the game has potential, but the toxic behavior of certain players ruins the experience.
    • I wish others good luck in avoiding the issues I faced and hope they can enjoy the game without similar problems.

Negative

Valve, enough is enough. Please fix this game, and the rest of your catalog. Hackers ruining the experience is one horrible thing, but those bot hosters have proved to be dangerous and unhinged individuals. When community members finally tried to do your work for you, they have been doxed, impersonated, threatened, and even swatted. I don't care if we never get a content update again, or even that new game ya'll have been cooking up, the already existing playerbases for team fortress 2, counter strike 2, and left for dead 2 deserve better. And they certainly deserve more than a tweet saying you hear them. You did not. It breaks my heart to say all this, but your inaction to keep your customers safe has lead us to this moment. If by some miracle this gets fixed, I will happily change this review.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel frustrated and disappointed with Valve for not addressing the issues in their games, particularly the rampant hacking and bot hosting that is ruining the experience for players.
    • I am deeply concerned about the safety of the community members who have tried to fix the issues themselves, as they have been doxed, impersonated, threatened, and even swatted.
    • I believe that Valve's inaction in protecting their customers has led to a dangerous and toxic environment within their games.
    • I feel heartbroken that Valve has not taken meaningful action to address these issues, despite the community's pleas for help.
    • I am disappointed that Valve's response to these serious issues has been limited to a tweet, which feels insufficient and dismissive.
    • I believe that the existing playerbases for Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 deserve better treatment and support from Valve.
    • I am willing to change my review if Valve miraculously fixes these issues, showing that I still hold some hope for improvement.
    • I feel that Valve's focus on new content or games is less important than addressing the current problems that are harming their existing games and communities.
    • I am frustrated that Valve has not prioritized the safety and well-being of their players, which should be their top concern.
    • I feel that Valve's lack of action has led to a loss of trust and respect from their playerbase, which is deeply concerning.

Negative

until someone fixes the hundreds of common infected spawning and the relentless beatings my thoughts are as follows, this game now sucks, stuck in the saferoom for 40 minutes!! no progress and barley beat no mercy with any sanity left, they completely ruined the game, whatever the devs did

  • Sentiments

    • I feel extremely frustrated with the game due to the hundreds of common infected spawning, which makes progression nearly impossible.
    • I am annoyed by the relentless beatings from enemies, which have made the game feel unfair and unenjoyable.
    • I think the game now sucks because of the changes made by the developers, which have ruined the experience for me.
    • I am stuck in the saferoom for 40 minutes, which feels like a waste of time and has halted my progress entirely.
    • I barely managed to beat No Mercy, and it left me feeling drained and without any sanity left.
    • I believe the developers have completely ruined the game with whatever changes they implemented.

Negative

Not a fan of how when I play the story, make progress, close the game, and then come back later, it doesn't bookmark where I was. It just expects me to remember and find it in the level select. Also, Steam Remote Play Together just straight up does not work with this game, but that might be Steam's fault, idk.

  • Sentiments

    • I am frustrated that the game does not bookmark my progress in the story mode, forcing me to remember and find my place in the level select every time I return to the game.
    • I am disappointed that Steam Remote Play Together does not work with this game, though I am unsure if the issue is with the game or Steam itself.
