AI Review

Ravenfield is an action-packed, single-player indie shooter that brings chaotic fun to the battlefield. With its easy-to-pickup gameplay, you’ll lead the Blue team against the Reds using helicopters, tanks, and a variety of weapons, all enhanced by hilarious active ragdoll physics. The game’s sandbox-style combat allows for massive battles, limited only by your PC’s performance. With an AI Community Rating of 89.04%, players praise its modding community, fun gameplay, and creative freedom through Steam Workshop integration. However, some note repetitive AI behavior, performance issues, and a lack of built-in content. Despite these flaws, Ravenfield’s charm lies in its simplicity and endless replayability, especially with mods. If you’re a fan of tactical mayhem and customization, this game is worth a try!

What the community wishes

Improve AI behavior and tactics
The AI lacks tactical depth, often running in straight lines without taking cover, flanking, or retreating. Adding more advanced AI behaviors like cover usage, flanking, and retreating would significantly enhance gameplay.
Add more squad commands
Players want more squad commands such as requesting ammo, medic support, suppressing fire, and deeper commands like repairing vehicles or turrets to improve team coordination and immersion.
Expand level editor assets
The native level editor lacks sufficient assets, limiting creativity. Adding more built-in assets would allow players to create more diverse and interesting maps without relying on external tools.
Introduce destructible environments
Players suggest adding minor destructibility, such as grenades creating foxholes or vehicles crushing fences, to enhance realism and immersion, though this may be limited by the game engine.
Add more game modes
Players request additional game modes like hostage rescue, defend the village, and capture the flag to increase variety and replayability.
Improve sound design
The game lacks sound effects like echoing and reverberation, which would make gunfire and explosions feel more immersive and realistic, especially in different environments.
Optimize game performance
The game is poorly optimized, especially with mods, leading to performance issues. Better optimization would improve the experience, particularly for players with lower-end systems.
Enhance vehicle AI
The vehicle AI is subpar, often behaving erratically. Improving driving and combat AI for vehicles would make vehicle gameplay more engaging and realistic.
Add more base game content
Players feel the base game lacks sufficient content and polish after years of development. Adding more built-in maps, weapons, and features would reduce reliance on mods.
Improve AI accuracy balance
Enemy AI is overly accurate, even on easy difficulty, making cover ineffective. Balancing AI accuracy to make gameplay fairer and more enjoyable is a common request.
Add crosshair options
The game lacks default crosshairs, forcing players to rely on mods. Adding customizable crosshair options would improve accessibility and gameplay.
Improve mod compatibility
Some mods cause glitches or performance issues. Better mod compatibility and stability would enhance the overall modding experience.
Add more story content
Players want more story-driven missions or campaigns to add depth and variety to the game beyond sandbox gameplay.
Improve ragdoll physics
While ragdoll physics are fun, they can be inconsistent. Improving physics for more realistic and entertaining interactions would enhance immersion.
Add multiplayer support
Players suggest adding multiplayer or co-op modes to expand the game's appeal and provide new ways to play with friends.
Expand bot customization
Players want more options to customize bot behavior, difficulty, and loadouts to create more varied and challenging gameplay experiences.
Add more environmental variety
Players request more diverse environments, such as large-scale snow maps or urban settings, to increase visual and gameplay variety.
Improve UI and controls
The game has too many controls, making it overwhelming for new players. Simplifying and improving the UI and control scheme would enhance accessibility.
Add more built-in vehicles
Players want more default vehicles in the base game, reducing reliance on mods for vehicle variety and improving the out-of-the-box experience.
Address developer communication
Players feel the developer is dishonest and lacks transparency about updates and future plans. Better communication and consistent updates would build trust and engagement.

Positive

This game is pretty good. And even better with workshop support. It's practically the Garry's Mod of FPS, there are so many amazing mods (and plenty of bad ones) and it is great. It's pretty cheap as far as games go these days as well. All-in-all, a great game.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is pretty good, which gives me a positive impression overall.
    • I find the workshop support to be a significant enhancement, making the game even better.
    • I think the game is practically the Garry's Mod of FPS, which is a strong positive comparison.
    • I appreciate the abundance of amazing mods available, which adds a lot of value to the game.
    • I acknowledge that there are plenty of bad mods, but this doesn't detract significantly from my overall positive experience.
    • I consider the game to be great, which is a strong positive sentiment.
    • I find the game to be pretty cheap compared to other games these days, which is a positive aspect.
    • I conclude that the game is a great game overall, which is a strong positive sentiment.

Positive

I like this game. It feels like battlefield but it is paced much faster and easy to pick up! I highy recommend this. I really like how the developer and the community react; The developer lays out the basic features (custom maps, weapons, vehicles) and the community will then create their own and this really expands the variety of combat. My more important wishlist: [*]More squad commands: Request Ammo, Medic, Suppressing Fire from nearby team-mates (Commorose function from the Battlefield series) / Deeper commands for squadmates (repair vehicles / turrets). [*] [strike] Make transport helicopter a spawn point / mobile spawnpoints. [/strike] (addressed by mods) [*] More gamemodes: Hostage rescue, [strike] King of the Hill [/strike] , Defend the village. CTF, Steal the Bacon My less important wishlisht: [*]Some minor form of destrucability (grenades/tank shells will create fox holes in the ground/Vehicles are able to crush fences/light walls) Perhaps not possible w/ engine. [*] [strike] A form of base building (being able to add fortifications and turrets at objectives/rally points). [/strike] (addressed with mods) [*] [strike] Fire Support (Artillery Barrage, Helicopter Gun-Run, CAS, Armored Convoy, Transport Request, Call reinforcements). [/strike] (addressed with mods) [*] [strike] Large scale snow-map. [/strike] (addressed with mods) [*] [strike] Add zombie outbreak to maps [/strike] [/list]

  • Sentiments

    • I like this game because it feels similar to Battlefield but is paced much faster and easier to pick up, making it highly enjoyable.
    • I highly recommend this game due to its fast-paced gameplay and accessibility.
    • I appreciate how the developer and community interact, with the developer providing basic features and the community expanding the game with custom maps, weapons, and vehicles.
    • I wish for more squad commands, such as requesting ammo, medic, or suppressing fire, to enhance teamwork and strategy.
    • I would like to see more game modes, such as hostage rescue, defend the village, and CTF, to add variety to the gameplay.
    • I think adding minor destructibility, like grenades creating foxholes or vehicles crushing fences, would improve immersion, though it might not be possible with the current engine.
    • I am satisfied that some of my wishlist items, like transport helicopters as spawn points and base building, have already been addressed by mods.
    • I feel that the addition of fire support options, such as artillery barrages and helicopter gun-runs, would enhance the tactical depth of the game.
    • I am pleased that a large-scale snow map and zombie outbreak modes have been added through mods, fulfilling some of my desires.
    • I believe the game could benefit from deeper squadmate commands, such as repairing vehicles or turrets, to improve coordination.

Positive

Ravenfield is a modular, customizable, all-engrossing military sandbox. One driven by its expansive and active modding community. A modding community that, frankly, makes this game worthwhile. At its core, this game is a FPS with bots. How many bots? As many as your hardware can handle. What time period? Depends on what mods you've downloaded. You can even create or download maps to duke it out on. My favorite set-up is to play as U.S. SWAT troops with standard American weaponry while battling 40K Mechanicus wielding deadly Imperium weaponry. These battles can range from small European towns to the beaches of Normandy. I highly recommend this game for anyone looking to mess around in a low-stakes game.

  • Sentiments

    • I find Ravenfield to be a modular, customizable, and all-engrossing military sandbox, which makes it highly engaging and enjoyable.
    • I appreciate the game's expansive and active modding community, which significantly enhances its value and replayability.
    • I think the game's core concept of being an FPS with bots is simple yet versatile, allowing for a wide range of gameplay experiences.
    • I enjoy the flexibility of being able to play with as many bots as my hardware can handle, which adds to the game's scalability.
    • I like how the game's time period and setting can be customized through mods, offering endless possibilities for unique scenarios.
    • I find the ability to create or download maps to be a great feature, as it allows for diverse and personalized battlefields.
    • I particularly enjoy playing as U.S. SWAT troops with standard American weaponry, battling against 40K Mechanicus with Imperium weaponry, as it creates an exciting and unique combat experience.
    • I appreciate the variety of battle locations, ranging from small European towns to the beaches of Normandy, which adds to the game's immersive quality.
    • I recommend Ravenfield for anyone looking for a low-stakes game to mess around in, as it provides a fun and stress-free experience.
    • I feel that the modding community is what truly makes the game worthwhile, as it continuously adds new content and keeps the game fresh.

Positive

this game is alright on its own but you absolutely need mods to make it the best experience. average game: >set the quick play to my favorite settings >start the game >choose "good mod weapon" >play >spawn on carrier bcuz archipelago is the best map (especially revisited) >get in modded chinook ch-47 or whatever >bring squad of unintelligent imbeciles called "AI" who disgrace my uniform >land in random spot >start fighting as AIs die >fire one bullet/burst >decide that my weapon is garbage so i reset for new one >keep dying until the beautiful AIs win for me >end up getting 500 kill victory somehow I love this game 1000/10

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is decent on its own, but it truly shines when mods are added to enhance the experience.
    • I find the quick play settings and customization options to be average, but they allow me to tailor the game to my preferences.
    • I enjoy using modded weapons, as they significantly improve the gameplay experience compared to the default options.
    • I love the Archipelago map, especially the revisited version, as it stands out as the best map in the game.
    • I appreciate the modded Chinook CH-47, as it adds a fun and unique element to the gameplay.
    • I am frustrated with the AI squadmates, as they are unintelligent and often fail to contribute effectively to the mission.
    • I find the default weapons to be underwhelming, often forcing me to reset and try new ones during gameplay.
    • I am amused by the irony of the AI squadmates winning the mission for me despite their incompetence.
    • I am surprised and delighted when I achieve a 500-kill victory, even though it feels somewhat undeserved.
    • Overall, I absolutely love this game and rate it 1000/10, despite its flaws and reliance on mods.

Positive

mods galore chef's kiss of a game ea26 turned into ea27 so its even better now was literally unplayable with ea26 computer blow up last time source: believe me edit: yes i know its been a lot of time but still ea28 gave my computer anti-supermaneuverable-aircraft measures so i think its p good tbf. edit no.2: nuclear deterrence from ea29 has been achieved. ravenfield is now a nuclear capable program. edit no.3: ravenfield can now allow you to time travel. very handy.

  • Sentiments

    • The game has an abundance of mods, which enhances the experience significantly.
    • The game is described as a 'chef's kiss,' indicating it is exceptionally good.
    • The transition from EA26 to EA27 improved the game, making it better than before.
    • EA26 was described as 'literally unplayable,' highlighting a significant issue with that version.
    • The reviewer's computer 'blew up' with EA26, emphasizing the severity of the issues with that version.
    • EA28 introduced anti-supermaneuverable-aircraft measures, which the reviewer finds to be a good improvement.
    • EA29 added nuclear deterrence capabilities, which the reviewer humorously appreciates.
    • The game now allows time travel, which the reviewer finds to be a very handy feature.

Negative

[strike][h1]Potential.[/h1][/strike] Ravenfield is an ambitious FPS set around pitching large groups of AI against each other and allowing the player to join in too. There are multiple vehicles, maps and weapons available, there is also a body physics system which I really like. Sadly this game is let down on its main focus which is the AI. I really really wanted to like Ravenfield and give it a good review but the AI just isn't up to scratch. I found the vehicle AI to be okay but the infantry AI is really boring. Infantry don't take cover or use any kind of tactics instead they just run at each other on a set path, sometimes a squad or an individual will break off from the main group but on all the maps I've played there is always an area where the AI will accumulate and pointlessly massacre each other. I haven't seen the AI do any kind of actual flanking or retreating, they will always walk along a set path and keep advancing until they die. [strike]I understand that Ravenfield is only being developed by one person and when you take that into consideration what he/she has done here is amazing. But I cannot recommend this simply because I didn't really get any enjoyment out of playing against or watching the AI. Hopefully the adition of mods and more updates will make the AI and overall game much more enjoyable. Ravenfield has potential.[/strike] [b]2024 Review Update:[/b] Yeah so, after all these years, the Ravenfield AI is still absolute trash. They're just not fun to fight or well programmed, no matter how many mods you slap on. Arma 3 with AI mods is the still the best thing we've got, which is unfortunate. Ravenfield having Overwhelmingly Positive reviews is just bizarre to me and pretty undeserved for such a bare bones project propped up by modders.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the concept of Ravenfield ambitious and appreciate the inclusion of multiple vehicles, maps, weapons, and a body physics system, which I really like.
    • I am disappointed by the AI, which is the main focus of the game, as it fails to meet expectations and significantly impacts the overall experience.
    • I find the vehicle AI to be acceptable, but the infantry AI is particularly underwhelming, lacking tactics, cover usage, or meaningful behavior.
    • I observe that the infantry AI often follows set paths, accumulates in specific areas, and engages in pointless massacres without any flanking or retreating behavior.
    • I acknowledge that Ravenfield is developed by a single person, which is impressive, but this does not compensate for the lack of enjoyment I experience due to the poor AI.
    • I express hope that mods and updates could improve the AI and overall game experience, indicating a belief in the game's potential.
    • I update my review in 2024 to state that the AI remains poorly programmed and unfun to fight, even after years of development and modding.
    • I compare Ravenfield unfavorably to Arma 3 with AI mods, which I consider a superior alternative for AI-driven gameplay.
    • I find it bizarre and undeserved that Ravenfield has Overwhelmingly Positive reviews, given its bare-bones nature and reliance on modders.

Negative

While the game is well done and feels good, sounds good etc., at the end of the day it's just an easy bot slaughter game. Mods help to add some variety but there's not really any that change the game up as far as making the game more challenging or improving AI and making it more fun. It's mostly just different weapons and items to slaughter bots in different ways. The AI kind of just do the exact same things regardless of map or mods you install. Because of this, it's hard for me to recommend because it just gets very boring and repetitive really fast. After playing a few matches, downloading a bunch of mods, you just realize there's not much challenge or variety at all in the gameplay. I get it though, some people love easy bot slaughter games like this but it just doesn't stick for me.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is well done, with good visuals and sound design, which makes it enjoyable in some aspects.
    • I find the game to be too easy, as it primarily involves slaughtering bots without much challenge, which reduces my enjoyment.
    • I appreciate that mods add some variety to the game, but they don't significantly change the gameplay or make it more challenging.
    • I feel that the AI behavior is repetitive and predictable, regardless of the map or mods installed, which makes the game feel monotonous.
    • I think the game lacks meaningful variety, as most mods only offer different weapons or items to kill bots in slightly different ways.
    • I find the gameplay to become boring and repetitive very quickly, which makes it hard for me to recommend the game.
    • I understand that some players might enjoy easy bot-slaughter games like this, but it doesn't appeal to me personally.
    • I feel that the game lacks depth and challenge, which limits its long-term appeal and replayability.
    • I think the game could benefit from improved AI or mods that introduce more complexity and challenge to the gameplay.
    • I feel that the game has potential but falls short due to its repetitive nature and lack of meaningful progression.

Negative

Unpolished after all this time. Costs too much for what it is. To be fair I used to like this game & its itch.io rendition & there are cool mods for it, but it's simply annoying to play. Edit: There is no way in hell this game's reviews are legit. 96% positive? For this abandoned game? Not a chance.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is unpolished even after a significant amount of time has passed since its release.
    • I believe the game costs too much for the quality and content it provides.
    • I used to like this game and its itch.io rendition, which gives me a sense of nostalgia.
    • I think there are cool mods available for the game, which adds some value to it.
    • I find the game simply annoying to play, which makes it frustrating.
    • I am skeptical about the legitimacy of the game's reviews, as I find it hard to believe it has a 96% positive rating.
    • I feel the game has been abandoned, which contributes to my dissatisfaction with it.

Negative

Honestly, the game's AI needs a major rework. The enemy AI can spot you and accurately hit you (even on easy) from across the map. Taking cover is irrelevant, because the moment- the very nanosecond- you emerge, a guy 500 meters away will blast you with an AK (RK) 47, landing every single hit with laser accuracy.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game's AI is poorly designed and needs a major rework, as it significantly impacts the gameplay experience.
    • I find it frustrating that the enemy AI can spot and accurately hit me from across the map, even on the easiest difficulty setting.
    • I am annoyed that taking cover is irrelevant because enemies can instantly detect and shoot me the moment I emerge.
    • I am disappointed that enemies can land every single hit with laser accuracy, making the game feel unfair and unbalanced.
    • I feel that the game's difficulty is poorly balanced, as even on easy mode, the AI behaves unrealistically and punishes players excessively.

Negative

the developer isn't a bad person, but he's undeniably dishonest and naive; promising far too much and never delivering an ounce of it. the game has looked the same for 7 years. various updates come out with frivolous bulls**t that doesn't address the core flaws with the game. the added content is pure fluff, and even then its all half baked and abandoned for another manic change a few months later. rinse and repeat. hardly any decent core content and so poorly optimised, especially with mods. ive never played this game for more than 15 minutes at a time, its so dull and repetitive. not worth the price whatsoever, it's a £4 game. make no mistake the modding community is the only thing providing value to this game. I wouldn't mind if the developer was honest with the development, but he perpetually lies every few months to keep people mildly interested in the game. sleazy. it's a small physics test engine. nothing more. the game is estimated to have generated $20 mil. lets have a super low estimate and say the developer has seen $1 million, over 7 years that's $140,000 a year, not a bad fu**ing salary. even at the lowest estimate its enough to hire 2 developers to help you actually develop the game that's providing you income, no? rather than drag out non-existent development for 7 years solo, and have to lie to save face. if you struggle with a certain aspect of development, why not get help with it? i don't understand. i bought it in hopes it would develop. if anything, it's gotten worse. just abandon the game and have some self awareness. the game had promise. that promise is long long long gone.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel the developer is dishonest and naive, promising far too much and never delivering on those promises.
    • I believe the game has looked the same for 7 years, with updates that add frivolous content instead of addressing core flaws.
    • I find the added content to be pure fluff, half-baked, and quickly abandoned for other changes.
    • I think the game lacks decent core content and is poorly optimized, especially with mods.
    • I feel the game is dull and repetitive, making it unplayable for more than 15 minutes at a time.
    • I believe the game is not worth its price and should be valued at £4 at most.
    • I think the modding community is the only thing providing value to the game.
    • I feel the developer lies every few months to keep people mildly interested in the game, which I find sleazy.
    • I believe the game is nothing more than a small physics test engine, despite generating an estimated $20 million.
    • I think the developer should have hired help to improve the game instead of dragging out non-existent development for 7 years.
