AI Review

Resident Evil 2 is a genre-defining survival horror masterpiece, rebuilt from the ground up for a modern audience. With an AI Community Rating of 89.62%, this game delivers a gripping narrative, intense action, and breathtaking visuals powered by Capcom’s RE Engine. Players step into the shoes of rookie cop Leon Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield as they navigate a zombie-infested Raccoon City. The game features separate campaigns for both characters, offering unique perspectives on the story. Fans praise its atmospheric tension, stunning graphics, and immersive gameplay, but some note issues like repetitive enemy encounters and inconsistent pacing. If you’re a fan of heart-pounding horror and intricate puzzles, Resident Evil 2 is a must-play.

What the community wishes

Improve enemy bullet sponge mechanics
Enemies take too many headshots, making combat feel unsatisfying. Adjust enemy health or damage mechanics to make combat more rewarding and less like shooting sponges.
Reduce Mr. X's repetitive annoyance
Mr. X's constant pursuit becomes more annoying than scary. Add variety to his behavior or allow players to temporarily disable him to improve pacing.
Enhance mouse control responsiveness
Mouse acceleration and smoothing make aiming and looking around frustrating. Add an option to disable these features for better control and reduced motion sickness.
Expand Raccoon City's zombie density
The city feels empty and lacks the zombie apocalypse atmosphere. Increase zombie density in outdoor areas to enhance immersion and tension.
Address timeline inconsistencies in campaigns
Leon and Claire's campaigns overlap too much, making them feel repetitive. Add more unique story elements or puzzles to differentiate their experiences.
Improve weapon sound design
Weapon sounds lack impact and realism. Enhance audio design for weapons to make combat more immersive and satisfying.
Add more variety to enemy types
The game relies heavily on zombies and Mr. X. Introduce more enemy types or variations to keep encounters fresh and challenging.
Optimize progression for modern players
Some puzzles and progression mechanics feel outdated and confusing. Streamline or modernize these elements to improve accessibility and reduce reliance on guides.
Enhance VR mod integration
The VR mod has minor bugs, like Leon's extremities appearing incorrectly. Improve VR support and fix bugs to enhance the VR experience.
Add more unique unlockable content
Unlockable mini-games and mods are fun but limited. Expand unlockable content to include more unique challenges or story-driven extras.
Improve late-game pacing and boss fights
Later levels and boss fights feel tedious. Adjust pacing and boss mechanics to maintain engagement and excitement throughout the game.
Clarify story continuity between campaigns
The continuity between A and B runs feels inconsistent. Improve story coherence between campaigns to enhance narrative immersion.
Add more dynamic enemy AI
Enemy AI, especially Mr. X, feels predictable. Introduce more dynamic and adaptive AI behaviors to increase tension and replayability.
Expand inventory management options
Inventory management can feel restrictive. Add more inventory slots or storage options to reduce frustration and improve gameplay flow.
Enhance environmental storytelling
While environments are detailed, they lack deeper storytelling. Add more environmental clues or lore to enrich the narrative and world-building.
Improve character dialogue quality
Leon's dialogue can feel cringeworthy. Refine character dialogue to make it more engaging and less immersion-breaking.
Add more variety to puzzles
Puzzles are repetitive and lack variety. Introduce more diverse and challenging puzzles to keep gameplay fresh and engaging.
Optimize game for Steam Deck
While the game runs well on Steam Deck, further optimization could improve performance and battery life for handheld players.
Expand replayability with new modes
Replayability is strong but could be enhanced. Add new game modes, such as survival or speedrun challenges, to increase long-term engagement.
Address minor graphical inconsistencies
Some graphical effects, like lighting or textures, are inconsistent. Polish these elements to maintain visual quality throughout the game.

Positive

Having played the original, I can only judge the game on its own merits - and they are plentiful. Both visuals and sounds are doing a fantastic job immersing you in a dreadful situation your characters have found themselves in, but the level, enemy, and encounter designs are what truly keep you on your toes the whole time. The puzzles are intuitive yet sometimes pretty clever, and, together with resource management and routing, they form a solid, thoughtful gameplay loop punctuated by seamless transitions between levels and locations. These environments are emaculately well done, too, although hardly original by todays standards. The Orphanage, though, will definetly stay in my mind for some time. The later levels dragged just a bit in my experience and culminated in bossfights I would consider tedious, but that didn't hinder my enjoiment much. The plot is challenging for me to say anything about, as the Resident Evil mythos is very mature and influential, so nowadays the story may feel a tad naive, but it surely is competent, and the characters, although shallow, are appealing. Resident Evil 2: Remake was a fantastic way for me to experience a classic and is a great game overall.

  • Sentiments

    • The characters, while shallow, were appealing and added to the overall experience of the game.

Positive

What can I say about this game except that it is absolute perfection from all aspects... I hope that the other Resident Evil remakes that come to us in the future will be as perfectly done as this one.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that this game is absolute perfection from all aspects, which makes it an exceptional experience.
    • I hope that future Resident Evil remakes will be as perfectly done as this one, showing my high expectations for the series.

Negative

It's been so long since I played this but here's what I remember. The beginning was great, but I started disliking the game as it went on. I just remember hating the combat and the enemies. Thinking about this and RE6, I think I actually remember liking RE6 more.

  • Sentiments

    • I remember the beginning of the game being great, which left a positive impression on me initially.
    • As I continued playing, I started disliking the game more and more, which made the overall experience less enjoyable.
    • I distinctly remember hating the combat system, which significantly impacted my enjoyment of the game.
    • The enemies in the game were frustrating and added to my negative experience with the game.
    • When I compare this game to RE6, I actually remember liking RE6 more, which highlights my disappointment with this game.

Negative

The game has negative mouse acceleration and smoothing. And no, you can't turn it off. Mouse movements are completely random. Aiming and looking around is extremely annoying and gives me motion sickness.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the negative mouse acceleration and smoothing in the game to be extremely frustrating, especially since there is no option to turn it off.
    • The mouse movements feel completely random, which makes the gameplay experience very unpleasant.
    • Aiming and looking around in the game is extremely annoying and has caused me to experience motion sickness.

Negative

Such a disappointment, how do you regress from a game made 20 years before? It barely even stands as a good survival horror by itself (though better than most walking sims). They made some strange sacrifices in the name of "realism" (obviously the key piece missing from the RE franchise) now we just have a very safe horror game with little enemy variety, little scare factor, characters as bland and generic as you could get them with Leon being potentially braindead ("I have to talk to the chief first"!?) weird attempts to have the characters flirt and Sherry moving on from her life-long trauma in about 5 seconds and wants to be adopted (very realistic) you could say the original had one-note characters but at least they made sense and had a point, characters like Annette are just changed for no reason so we can have a more cynical outlook on the game (I know people are really into that nowadays), like fuck her motherly qualities right? Let's just make her a workaholic and make the Claire the motherly figure!? The amount of content missing is absurd, not even gonna talk about the A and B scenarios since enough has been said about that. We have less puzzles, no interwoven narrative, boring boss fights, lack of interesting environments outside the station, I could go on. All this has done is pave the way for more remakes and more creative bankruptcy.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel disappointed by the game, as it seems to regress from a version made 20 years ago, failing to stand out as a good survival horror game on its own.
    • I find the game to be a very safe horror experience with little enemy variety and scare factor, which makes it less engaging.
    • I think the characters are bland and generic, with Leon's behavior feeling particularly unrealistic and poorly written.
    • I am frustrated by the forced attempts at character flirting, which feel out of place and unnatural in the game's context.
    • I find Sherry's rapid recovery from trauma and desire to be adopted unrealistic and poorly handled in the narrative.
    • I dislike the unnecessary changes to characters like Annette, which remove her motherly qualities and replace them with a more cynical portrayal.
    • I am disappointed by the lack of content, including fewer puzzles, boring boss fights, and uninteresting environments outside the police station.
    • I feel the game lacks an interwoven narrative, which was a strong point in the original version, making the remake feel incomplete.
    • I am concerned that this remake paves the way for more remakes and creative bankruptcy in the franchise.
    • I acknowledge that the game is better than most walking sims, but this is not enough to redeem its many flaws.

Negative

good game but finished less than 3 hours number of zombies were not much Mr X was like some idiot AI not scary one timeline of Leon and Claire does not make sense both do same puzzle same thing 90% are same sound of weapons are not well i expected better from you capcom city is empty of zombie i don't feel i am in raccoon city we wait for resident evil 5 and 6 remake don't disappoint us this time

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is good overall, but it was disappointing that I finished it in less than 3 hours.
    • I was disappointed by the low number of zombies in the game, which made it feel less immersive.
    • I found Mr. X to be poorly designed, as the AI felt unintelligent and not scary at all.
    • I was confused by the timeline of Leon and Claire, as their stories felt repetitive with 90% of the puzzles and actions being the same.
    • I was unimpressed by the sound design of the weapons, which did not meet my expectations.
    • I expected better quality from Capcom, as the game did not live up to my hopes.
    • I felt that the city was empty of zombies, which made it hard to believe I was in Raccoon City.
    • I am looking forward to the remakes of Resident Evil 5 and 6, hoping they will be better.
    • I hope Capcom does not disappoint us with the next remakes, as this game fell short of expectations.

Negative

Maybe modern gaming has rotted by brain, but I have no patience for this game. Almost 3 hours in and I can't get out of the damn police station. I was pretty stoked to get this on sale, with the "overwhelmingly positive" rating. But this just isn't for me.

  • Sentiments

    • I have no patience for this game, as modern gaming may have affected my expectations.
    • I am frustrated after almost 3 hours of gameplay and still cannot progress out of the police station.
    • I was initially excited to purchase this game due to its 'overwhelmingly positive' rating and sale price.
    • The game does not meet my personal preferences or expectations, despite its high ratings.
