Resident Evil 7 Biohazard redefines survival horror with its first-person perspective, delivering a chilling experience set in a decaying southern farmhouse. Powered by Capcom’s RE Engine, the game boasts photorealistic graphics and an immersive atmosphere that keeps players on edge. With an AI Community Rating of 87.06%, fans praise its terrifying ambiance, engaging story, and immersive gameplay. However, some note frustrations like unclear puzzles, clunky movement, and repetitive enemies. Despite these flaws, Resident Evil 7 is a must-play for horror enthusiasts seeking a fresh yet nostalgic take on the iconic series.

What the community wishes

Puzzles are frustrating and unclear
Many puzzles in the game are overly frustrating and lack clarity, requiring players to rely on guides. This detracts from the immersive experience and could be improved with better design or hints.
Final boss is underwhelming QTE
The final boss fight is reduced to a quick-time event, which feels anticlimactic and lacks the depth or challenge expected from a Resident Evil game. A more engaging and interactive boss fight would improve the ending.
Ship section is tedious and boring
The ship section of the game is described as tedious and less engaging compared to other parts of the game. This section could benefit from more dynamic gameplay or a faster pace to maintain player interest.
Cutscenes cannot be skipped
The inability to skip cutscenes, especially on subsequent playthroughs, is frustrating for players. Adding a skip option would improve replayability and user experience.
Lack of enemy variety
The game relies heavily on 'Molded' enemies, which become repetitive over time. Introducing more enemy types or variations would enhance combat and keep the gameplay fresh.
Protagonist feels emotionless
Ethan Winters, the protagonist, often comes across as emotionless, which detracts from the immersion. Adding more emotional depth or reactions to his character would improve the narrative experience.
Bosses are too easy
Boss fights are described as too easy, lacking the challenge expected in a survival horror game. Increasing the difficulty or adding more complex mechanics to boss fights would make them more engaging.
Clunky movement and combat
Ethan's movement and combat mechanics feel clunky, which can make the game less enjoyable. Improving the fluidity and responsiveness of controls would enhance the overall gameplay experience.
Second half of game drops off
The second half of the game is perceived as weaker compared to the first, with less engaging content. Balancing the pacing and maintaining tension throughout the entire game would improve player satisfaction.
Lack of Resident Evil 'feel'
Some players feel the game lacks the traditional Resident Evil atmosphere and gameplay elements. Incorporating more classic RE features, such as zombies or third-person mode, could appeal to long-time fans.
Inventory management is frustrating
The limited inventory space and resource management can be frustrating, especially during intense moments. Expanding inventory options or providing more storage solutions would alleviate this issue.
DLC content overshadows main game
Some players found the DLC content more enjoyable than the main game, suggesting the base game could benefit from incorporating similar mechanics or variety to enhance the overall experience.
Graphics inconsistencies with ray tracing
The ray tracing update has some visual inconsistencies, such as odd-looking puddles. Improving the implementation of ray tracing to ensure consistent visual quality would enhance the game's graphics.
Too many jump scares
The game relies heavily on jump scares, which can feel repetitive and less impactful over time. Balancing jump scares with more psychological horror elements would improve the overall scare factor.
Lack of exploration opportunities
The game limits exploration due to constant threats, reducing the sense of discovery. Allowing more opportunities for safe exploration would enhance the player's connection to the environment.
Ending feels rushed
The ending of the game feels rushed and lacks the depth of earlier sections. Extending the conclusion or adding more narrative closure would improve the overall story experience.
Difficulty spikes are inconsistent
The game's difficulty spikes are inconsistent, with some sections being too easy and others overly challenging. Balancing the difficulty curve would create a more cohesive gameplay experience.
Lack of replayability incentives
The game lacks strong incentives for replayability, such as varied outcomes or rewards. Adding more replayability features, like alternate endings or unlockable content, would encourage multiple playthroughs.
Too much reliance on gore
The game's heavy reliance on gore can be off-putting for some players. Balancing gore with more psychological horror elements would broaden the game's appeal.
Limited weapon variety
The game offers limited weapon variety, which can make combat feel repetitive. Introducing more weapons or upgrades would add depth to the combat system.

Since starting this game, I have been pinned to the wall by a screwdriver, had my hand chopped off about 2 or 3 times, killed the same man three times, gone through domestic violence, been forced into a family dinner by cannibals and seen a cleaner's worst nightmare. 10/10, what I imagine living in Louisiana is like.

Positive

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was a bit of a letdown in terms of puzzles, though there was one standout sequence towards the end. However, the level design, lore, and overall gameplay experience was solid and engaging. While it did get a little too grotesque for my tastes, I realize that's more of a personal preference than a genuine critique, considering the nature of these games. I also explored the DLCs: "End of Zoe" and "Not a Hero", both taking an hour to complete. The former offered satisfying, punchy combat as Joe Baker with a touch of humor, while the latter took a much darker approach, delivering a more intense, story-driven extension to the main narrative. The game was worth the time, but unfortunately I must say it's my least favorite Resident Evil title as of this moment.

    • The level design, lore, and overall gameplay experience were solid and engaging, which I appreciated.
    • The game got a little too grotesque for my tastes, but I acknowledge that this is more of a personal preference than a genuine critique.

    • The DLC 'Not a Hero' took a darker approach, delivering a more intense, story-driven extension to the main narrative, which I found compelling.
    • Overall, the game was worth the time I invested in it, despite some shortcomings.
    • Unfortunately, I must say that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is my least favorite Resident Evil title as of this moment.

Negative

So, first off, this is an objectively good video game but for some reason I cannot find myself liking it. I've played the remakes of Resident Evil 2,3, and 4 but i really cannot vibe with this game. Ethan feels very clunky to play at some points and I get why, but it makes the game a lot less fun for me. I didn't beat the game so my review might mean nothing. Maybe I'll like Re8

  • Sentiments

    • I acknowledge that this is an objectively good video game, but I personally cannot find myself liking it.
    • I have played the remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, but I cannot vibe with this game.
    • Ethan feels very clunky to play at some points, which makes the game a lot less fun for me.
    • I understand why Ethan feels clunky, but it still detracts from my enjoyment of the game.
    • I didn't beat the game, so my review might not hold much weight.
    • I am hopeful that I might like Resident Evil 8 in the future.

Negative

  • Sentiments

    • I was hesitant to try this game for a long time, and it turns out my hesitation was justified because it is probably the worst Resident Evil game I have ever played.
    • The game does not capture the atmosphere of the franchise at all, which is disappointing.
    • I do not want to continue playing this game because it fails to meet my expectations.
    • The game might be okay if you want to get scared occasionally, but the scares are too infrequent, happening only every 40 minutes.
    • Overall, the game bores me and feels like a chore to play.
    • The game is not just boring but also irritating and unpleasant to play.

Negative

I don't like body horror games. I don't really like horror games in general to be honest. This was not what I was hoping for after RE2 and 3 remake and the originals of 4, 5 and 6. I didn't grow up with the original RE1, 2 and 3. Resident Evil is not a pure horror game series for me and this felt kinda wrong. The RE series falls more in line with Dead Space or even Dead Rising or Dying Light for me. My biggest problem is the story. In every other Resident Evil game, we are fighting against Zombies made by Umbrella. The story felt grounded und kinda realistic. RE7s main antagonist (story, not gameplaywise) is a
little evil girl with dark magical powers.
Yes, we have seen this overused trope countless times. Its not realistic. Its not Resident Evil. This game feels more like FEAR. They even changed the perspective to first person to make the body horror work, but that just further shows how distinct this game is from the other Resident Evils. For what they set out to do, its an okay experience - except for this annoying stuff: - annoying blood stains on HUD at minimal damage - weird boss telling ("Am I doing that right? Does he take damage? Is this even a boss fight?") - UI is snappy but sounds are to aggressive and everything feels slow compared to RE2 and RE3 remakes - every door in this game is opened by pressing your face against it (tip: press f + f) - the sounds of the molded are just disgusting and annoying - there is one part where they respawn indefinetly and waste your time. Without info. Just this part. - call it how you want, but enemies spawning behind me every few minutes is BS for me - can't record with GeForce - tab in and out takes forever - activated HDR even if I say no in the settings - i miss my rocket launcher Some Reviewers say "this game saved the Resident Evil franchise". In my book, this isn't even a Resident Evil.

  • Sentiments

    • I don't like body horror games or horror games in general, and this game didn't meet my expectations after enjoying the RE2 and 3 remakes and the originals of 4, 5, and 6.
    • The story in RE7 feels unrealistic and unlike Resident Evil, with an overused trope of a little evil girl with dark magical powers, which doesn't align with the grounded and realistic tone of previous games.
    • The change to a first-person perspective makes the game feel distinct from other Resident Evil titles, but it doesn't resonate with me as a fan of the series.
    • The game has several annoying design choices, such as blood stains on the HUD at minimal damage, unclear boss fight mechanics, and overly aggressive UI sounds.
    • The enemies, like the molded, have disgusting and annoying sounds, and their spawning mechanics, especially when they respawn indefinitely, feel frustrating and time-wasting.
    • Technical issues like the inability to record with GeForce, slow tab-in and tab-out times, and HDR activation despite settings being turned off further detract from the experience.
    • I miss the rocket launcher and other elements that made previous Resident Evil games enjoyable for me.
    • For what the game set out to do, it's an okay experience, but it doesn't feel like a true Resident Evil game to me.
    • Some reviewers claim this game saved the Resident Evil franchise, but in my opinion, it doesn't even qualify as a Resident Evil game.
    • The game's distinct approach, including its body horror and first-person perspective, might appeal to others, but it doesn't align with my preferences or expectations for the series.

Negative

This game has absolutely nothing with Resident Evil franchise. The only thing is has from Resident Evil is the title. That's it. It's a completely different genre. It's a survival horror, you know games like "Outlast". If you like running, escaping and hiding all the time and unable to fight back, this game is for you. Personally I hate such games. I like when I fight back and I don't like hiding games. This game sucks compared to previous Resident Evil games.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that this game has absolutely nothing to do with the Resident Evil franchise, which is disappointing.
    • I think the only connection to Resident Evil is the title, which feels misleading.
    • I believe the game is a completely different genre, focusing on survival horror rather than the traditional Resident Evil style.
    • I dislike the gameplay mechanics of running, escaping, and hiding all the time, as it doesn't align with my preferences.
    • I prefer games where I can fight back, and this game doesn't offer that, which I find frustrating.
    • I think this game is more suited for fans of games like 'Outlast,' but it doesn't appeal to me personally.
    • I feel that this game sucks compared to previous Resident Evil games, which I enjoyed more.

Negative

I am a relatively experienced resident evil player and can say for certain that this game is NOT a return to form, it takes basic aspects from classic resident evil and makes it much less innovative and interesting, the game's atmosphere is generic and the game is slow, having so many sections where you just hold forward through an uninteresting story. Now, all that could be passable, if it was not for the first person camera angle, no classic survival horror game has ever been in first person and for good reason. It is pretty much impossible to know enemy position when in first person, because you can not look at the enemy while running away because you can only sprint in the direction you're looking (why?) and this is a pretty big problem when you take into account that you must avoid Jack for this area of the game and in his boss fight, he is extremely fast, tanky, and is fought in a small arena.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the game is not a return to form for the Resident Evil series, as it fails to capture the innovation and interest of the classic games.
    • I find the game's atmosphere to be generic and lacking the unique tension that classic Resident Evil games are known for.
    • I think the game is slow-paced, with many sections where you simply hold forward through an uninteresting story, which feels tedious.
    • I believe the first-person camera angle is a poor choice for a survival horror game, as it makes it difficult to track enemy positions while running away.
    • I find it frustrating that you can only sprint in the direction you're looking, which complicates avoiding enemies like Jack.
    • I feel that Jack, as a boss, is overly fast, tanky, and difficult to deal with, especially in the small arena where the fight takes place.
    • I think the game takes basic aspects from classic Resident Evil but fails to make them innovative or engaging.
    • I find the story uninteresting, which detracts from the overall experience of the game.
    • I feel that the game's design choices, such as the first-person perspective, detract from the survival horror experience.
    • I believe the game's pacing and mechanics make it less enjoyable compared to the classic entries in the series.
