AI Review

Resident Evil Village, the 8th major installment in the iconic Resident Evil franchise, delivers a gripping blend of survival horror and first-person action. With an AI Community Rating of 88.73%, players praise its stunning graphics, immersive story, and intense gameplay. Set years after the events of Resident Evil 7, you step into the shoes of Ethan Winters as he navigates a mysterious village filled with terrifying foes and familiar faces like Chris Redfield. The game’s detailed environments and masterful storytelling create a chilling atmosphere, though some players note the horror elements lean more toward action. While the community loves the beautiful visuals and engaging characters, criticisms include clunky combat mechanics and inconsistent pacing. If you enjoy atmospheric horror with a mix of action, Resident Evil Village is a must-play. However, if you prefer pure horror or deeper character development, it might fall short of expectations.

What the community wishes

Limited backtracking for item collection
Players are unable to backtrack to certain areas (e.g., Castle, Reservoir) after progressing, leading to missed items. A fast travel mechanic or clearer warnings about points of no return would improve the experience.
PC port UI/UX issues
The PC port has inconvenient menu navigation, poor default key bindings, and a locked FOV at 80. Improving UI/UX for mouse-and-keyboard users and adding FOV adjustments would enhance the experience.
Boss fights too easy
Some boss fights felt underwhelming on normal difficulty. Increasing challenge or adding more dynamic mechanics could make encounters more engaging.
Inconsistent horror elements
The game leans more toward action than horror, with limited scares compared to RE7. Balancing horror and action elements better could satisfy fans of both genres.
Lack of character depth
The four lords' stories feel cursory and underdeveloped. Expanding their backstories and screen time would add depth to the narrative.
Final area pacing issues
The final section feels rushed, with excessive cutscenes and a lackluster final boss fight. Improving pacing and boss mechanics would enhance the climax.
Mercenaries mode lacks challenge
Mercenaries mode is less engaging compared to previous entries. Adding more aggressive enemy AI or dynamic objectives could improve replayability.
Dialogue quality inconsistent
The dialogue is often poorly written and forgettable. Refining character interactions and dialogue would strengthen the narrative.
Inventory drag-and-drop issues
Inventory management on PC is clunky, with a poorly implemented drag-and-drop system. Streamlining this mechanic would improve usability.
Story lacks supernatural explanation
Supernatural elements are poorly explained, leaving players confused. Adding more lore or context would make the story more cohesive.
Initial village section too hard
The early village section on hardcore difficulty is excessively challenging, with too many enemies. Adjusting enemy density or player resources would improve balance.
Heisenberg's segment underdeveloped
Heisenberg's factory segment feels rushed compared to Castle Dimitrescu. Expanding this area and its lore would enhance the game's variety.
DLC content feels limited
The DLC for Rose is short and lacks depth. Adding more content or expanding her story would increase its value.
Combat mechanics feel clunky
Combat can feel unsatisfying and repetitive. Improving weapon feedback and enemy AI would make encounters more engaging.
Puzzles too simplistic
Puzzles are straightforward and lack challenge. Introducing more complex or varied puzzles would enhance gameplay variety.
Final boss fight underwhelming
The final boss fight feels like a chore rather than a climax. Redesigning the fight to be more dynamic and challenging would improve the ending.
Lack of fast travel mechanic
The absence of fast travel makes backtracking tedious. Adding a fast travel system would improve exploration and item collection.
Enemy AI lacks aggression
Enemies in Mercenaries mode don't seek out the player, reducing tension. Making enemies more aggressive would increase the mode's challenge.
Story pacing inconsistent
The story alternates between slow and rushed segments. Improving pacing and balancing action with narrative would create a smoother experience.
Limited replayability incentives
Replayability is limited to achievements and full completion. Adding new modes, challenges, or rewards would encourage multiple playthroughs.

Positive

One of the best Resident Evil games to be released! It basically meshes together Resident Evil 4 and 7 then gives you the best of two. The whole story had me completely invested with Ethan and what was going on, in my opinion I love his character and what he brings to this universe, he's brave, resilient but also terrified of what he knows is to come. The gameplay was good but adding customization and more options to choose from to fight terrifying enemies with, I will say some boss fights did seem a little easy but that didn't take away the fun and horror from them (I'm saying this only playing on normal haha haven't tried a harder difficulty yet. (unlike RE4 Hardcore where I am stuck in the castle) The village was horrifyingly beautiful and looked amazing in 4K, RT and HDR. Also As someone who is from Eastern Europe I have to say the Village design and atmosphere is incredible! It sometimes felt like a nightmarish version of my grandmas house... I played RE4 VR, then 2,3 remake, then I played 7 and really liked the fresh start and first person camera and Village was on the pre-order right when then announced! Happy to say it delivered in every aspect of my expectations! I can only imagine what awaits us in the next chapter of this amazing franchise. I see a RE show or a movie and it makes me want to play the games...and then I play and want to watch movies again, this universe does not want to let you go! It was a game of the year for me and many others in 2021!

Positive

Resident Evil Village seamlessly blends horror with action, presenting an enthralling narrative that unfolded with an unexpected twist, leaving me thoroughly impressed. The diverse environments, ranging from the eerie village to the haunting castle, showcase some splendid visuals. Furthermore, the inclusion of familiar interfaces and gameplay mechanics is welcomed, especially for someone like me who isn't a seasoned gamer and prefers simplicity. Moreover, while initially doubting the effectiveness of the first-person perspective, I found it to genuinely amplify the horror! Suffice to say, it excels in delivering a modern and engaging experience that's truly enjoyable: Highly recommended!

Positive

I played this game while living in Moldova, near Romania. The Romanian influence here is quite strong—language, culture, and history. It was great to experience the Eastern European vibes in RE. The vampires are inspired by local legends. The locations are fantastic, and the difficulty options make the game accessible to everyone. Like!

Positive

I just recently discovered the Resident Evil series for me again. After years I replayed RE5 and then devided to try the remakes of RE2 and RE4. I then moved on to RE7 and then to Resident Evil Village. I absolutely fell in love with the game concept. Even though the game style changes from title to title I always found something that catches me. Characters, story or the overall experience. I can absolutely recommend this game. It was creepy, with nice puzzles and a great story. I wish there was more content than just the DLC for Rose. I highly recommend to play Resident Evil 7 before playing this game. My system is not up to date, with a Ryzen 3700X and a GTX1070ti everything ran just fine on 1080p. Hope this review helps someone :)

    • My system, with a Ryzen 3700X and a GTX1070ti, ran the game just fine on 1080p, which was a relief.
    • I replayed RE5 after years and then tried the remakes of RE2 and RE4, which reignited my interest in the series.
    • The game style changes from title to title, but I always found something that caught my attention.
    • I hope this review helps someone, as I wanted to share my positive experience with the game.

Positive

One of the best of its genre. RE8 not only is a great action horror game with good feeling combat, interesting exploration, and a decent story; but it also leans into the campy nature of the franchise. Ethan's stubborn "I'm over this bullshit" attitude and cheesy one liners fit right in with some of the most beloved moments of the series. They're in on the joke and they're reveling in it, while still telling a solid impactful story. Different parts of the game lean on different strengths, mixing things up a bit throughout keeping things from getting too stale or repetitive. One moment you have the classic "move around this area while avoiding a large invincible adversary" the next you get your tense escape room-esque puzzles with no way to fight back against the horror looking for you and then you get your wild over the top action shootouts and giant bosses, which all feel unique and distinct, sprinkled in. A great memorable experience that shouldn't be missed.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that RE8 is one of the best games in its genre, offering a great mix of action and horror elements.
    • I appreciate the good feeling combat, which adds to the overall enjoyment of the game.
    • I find the exploration in the game to be interesting and engaging, keeping me invested in the experience.
    • I think the story is decent, providing a solid foundation for the game's events and character development.
    • I enjoy how the game leans into the campy nature of the franchise, making it feel authentic and fun.
    • I like Ethan's stubborn attitude and cheesy one-liners, which add charm and humor to the game.
    • I appreciate the variety in gameplay, with different parts of the game focusing on unique strengths to keep things fresh.
    • I find the mix of classic horror elements, escape room-esque puzzles, and over-the-top action shootouts to be well-balanced and exciting.
    • I think the game avoids becoming stale or repetitive by constantly mixing up the gameplay mechanics.
    • I consider RE8 to be a great and memorable experience that should not be missed by fans of the genre.

Negative

3 out of 5. Pretty as hell and the story was good, but dang is it barely scary at all. I feel like Capcom just wants to make an action-FPS series at this point. RE7 was terrifying, but outside of the second boss section this one didn't really do it for me. I'm not great at shooters, but I spent the whole game absolutely strapped from head to toe in ammo, explosives, and heals, all while on the hardest available difficulty at purchase. Bonus points off for terrible mouse and keyboard controls in the UI, and an FOV that feels insanely small for a game with so much action. If they're not going to be survival horror games anymore I kinda wish they would just stop calling it Resident Evil and re-brand the series into something else.

  • Sentiments

    • I think the game is visually stunning and has a good story, which are strong positive aspects.
    • I feel the game is not scary enough, especially compared to its predecessor, RE7, which was terrifying.
    • I believe Capcom is shifting the series towards an action-FPS style, which I find disappointing for a survival horror franchise.
    • I found the second boss section to be the only part of the game that felt genuinely scary.
    • I struggled with the mouse and keyboard controls in the UI, which I found to be terrible and frustrating.
    • I felt the FOV was too small for a game with so much action, which negatively impacted my experience.
    • I appreciate the abundance of ammo, explosives, and heals, even on the hardest difficulty, but it made the game feel less challenging.
    • I wish Capcom would rebrand the series if they are moving away from survival horror, as it no longer feels like Resident Evil.

Negative

Huge disappointment and probably the worst mainline RE game. The story is completely ridiculous (not in a good way like in previous RE titles). If you're wondering how they explain all the bullshit supernatural elements, they don't, it's just an afterthought note or two at the end of the game, which doesn't really give much context to all the monsters anyway. Similarly to RE7, half the game consists of cutscenes, but when you finally get to play, it's mostly a walking simulator with lackluster combat mechanics and puzzles. RE8 is only good for about 2 hours around the middle of the game, because you actually get to run around the village and use your key items to get some loot. Utilizing the merchant/selling treasure is definitely this game's strongest point. Unfortunately this doesn't last long and soon you're thrown into another snoozefest area, after which the game basically ends with more cutscenes, a pointless shooting gallery section, even more cutscenes, and finally a chore of a final boss fight. The mercenaries mode is lackluster as well compared to the one in RE5, 6 and RE4 remake. The only challenge here is finding all the enemies to get all kills on any given map, because they don't seek you out for some reason. In my opinion it's just not a good Resident Evil game. If you're not a fan of the series and bought it on sale it's probably fine, but I can't say I enjoyed most of my time with it. I gotta say that the graphics were really impressive, for all its faults the game is visually stunning.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the story to be completely ridiculous and poorly explained, with supernatural elements feeling like an afterthought rather than a meaningful part of the narrative.
    • I was disappointed by the excessive amount of cutscenes, which made the game feel more like a movie than an interactive experience.
    • The gameplay felt like a walking simulator with lackluster combat mechanics and puzzles, which I found unengaging and boring.
    • I enjoyed the middle section of the game for about 2 hours, where I could explore the village, use key items, and interact with the merchant system, which I found to be the strongest aspect of the game.
    • I was frustrated by the repetitive and uninteresting areas that followed the enjoyable village section, which made the game feel like a chore to play.
    • The final boss fight felt like a tedious and uninspired chore, which left me feeling unsatisfied with the game's conclusion.
    • I found the Mercenaries mode to be lackluster compared to previous entries in the series, with the only challenge being finding enemies rather than engaging in dynamic combat.
    • I believe this is the worst mainline Resident Evil game, as it failed to meet my expectations as a fan of the series.
    • I appreciated the game's impressive graphics, which were visually stunning despite the many flaws in gameplay and story.
    • I think the game might be acceptable for someone who is not a fan of the series and bought it on sale, but I personally did not enjoy most of my time with it.

Negative

It's so rare that I get so close to the end of a game and then just stop playing because I have no interest in the finale or continuing with its boring gameplay. I actually liked RE7 and of course am a fan of the earlier games, but something about Village just feels so clunky and boring to me. The combat is very unsatisfying and the story is so unforgettable I literally couldn't tell you what it was actually about other than Ethan loses baby, go find baby. The dialogue is some of the worst I've heard in an RE title and RE titles don't tend to have great dialogue to begin with. I'd say, if you haven't picked this up already, just spend the money on the RE4 remake or, better yet (if you haven't played it), the RE2 remake. The overwhelmingly positive reviews confound me.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel disappointed because I got close to the end of the game but stopped playing due to a lack of interest in the finale and its boring gameplay.
    • I liked RE7 and am a fan of the earlier games, but Village feels clunky and boring to me.
    • The combat in Village is very unsatisfying, which makes the gameplay less enjoyable.
    • The story is so forgettable that I can only recall the basic premise of Ethan losing his baby and trying to find it.
    • The dialogue is some of the worst I've heard in an RE title, which is disappointing since RE titles don't typically have great dialogue to begin with.
    • I recommend spending money on the RE4 remake or the RE2 remake instead of Village, especially if you haven't played them yet.
    • The overwhelmingly positive reviews for Village confound me, as my experience with the game was largely negative.

Negative

what a disapointment in porting with only 2hrs of gameplay an a further 3 hrs of trying to get the game to stop deleting my save files yes you heard me deletes your save files ,i have given up an asked for refund shame on you capcom for releasing a game with this game destroying bug. it should be romoved from steam sales till this is fixed an heck im a huge resi fan its why i sunk so much time looking on forums for a fix but sorry guys there isnt one

  • Sentiments

    • I feel extremely disappointed with the porting of the game, as it only offers 2 hours of gameplay, which is far below my expectations.
    • I am frustrated and annoyed that the game deletes my save files, which has caused me to lose progress multiple times.
    • I spent an additional 3 hours trying to fix the issue of save files being deleted, which was a waste of my time and effort.
    • I feel let down by Capcom for releasing a game with such a game-breaking bug, which has ruined my experience.
    • I believe the game should be removed from Steam sales until the save file deletion bug is fixed, as it is unacceptable in its current state.
    • Despite being a huge Resident Evil fan, I have given up on trying to fix the issue and have requested a refund, which makes me feel disheartened.
    • I feel ashamed of Capcom for releasing a game with such a critical flaw, as it tarnishes their reputation.
    • I spent a significant amount of time searching forums for a fix, but unfortunately, there is no solution available, which adds to my frustration.
    • I feel that the game is unplayable in its current state due to the save file deletion issue, which is a major letdown.
    • I am deeply disappointed as a fan of the series, as this experience has soured my opinion of the game and the developer.

Negative

This game sucks. Its fun enough the first time you play, but the ending drags, and thinking back, its not at all an experience you want to have again. I had crashes late into the game, the level design locks you out of certain areas without fair warning, and the sluggish nature of the guns and movement made this a decent, but overall not recommendable experience.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the game to be fun enough the first time I played it, which gave me a positive initial impression.
    • I felt that the ending of the game dragged on, which negatively impacted my overall experience.
    • I realized that the game is not an experience I would want to have again, which left me with a negative sentiment.
    • I experienced crashes late into the game, which was frustrating and detracted from my enjoyment.
    • I noticed that the level design locks players out of certain areas without fair warning, which felt unfair and frustrating.
    • I found the guns and movement to be sluggish, which made the gameplay feel less enjoyable and responsive.
    • I consider the game to be decent overall, but not recommendable due to its flaws.
