AI Review

Dive into the depths of psychological horror with SOMA, a sci-fi adventure from the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Set in the eerie underwater facility PATHOS-II, this game challenges you to survive a world where machines believe they are human, and danger lurks in every corner. With a gripping story that explores identity and consciousness, SOMA delivers a thought-provoking experience praised by the community, earning an impressive AI Community Rating of 90.37%. Players rave about its immersive atmosphere, captivating narrative, and haunting visuals, calling it a 'masterpiece' and 'must-play' for horror fans. However, some note pacing issues and a desire for more enemy variety. If you enjoy atmospheric, story-driven games with a philosophical edge, SOMA is a journey worth taking. Just remember: there’s no fighting back—only outsmarting your enemies or running for your life.

What the community wishes

Improve sneaking mechanics
The sneaking mechanics were described as mediocre. Enhancing stealth gameplay could improve immersion and tension, especially for players who prefer not to use Safe Mode.
Add more enemy variety
While the enemies are terrifying, increasing their variety and behaviors could enhance the horror experience and keep players on edge throughout the game.
Address pacing issues
The game drags in the beginning and has filler in the midsection. Streamlining these sections could maintain player engagement and improve overall pacing.
Reduce screen glitch effects
The screen glitching when monsters are close can be annoying and potentially harmful for photo-sensitive players. Reducing or adding options to disable these effects would improve accessibility.
Expand on ending resolution
The ending, while impactful, left some players wanting more. Expanding on the resolution or providing additional closure could enhance the emotional payoff.
Improve puzzle complexity
The puzzles are described as easy. Adding more complex or varied puzzles could deepen gameplay and challenge players more effectively.
Enhance Safe Mode experience
Safe Mode removes the need to sneak, but it could be improved by adding alternative mechanics or challenges to maintain tension without relying on stealth.
Add more interactive elements
The game has limited interaction with the world. Adding more interactive elements or environmental storytelling could enhance immersion and player engagement.
Optimize for lower-end PCs
Some players struggled with performance on lower-end PCs. Optimizing the game for a wider range of hardware could improve accessibility and player experience.
Expand on moral choices
The moral choices are impactful but limited. Expanding on these choices and their consequences could deepen the philosophical and emotional impact of the game.
Add more save points
The tension is high, but more frequent save points could reduce frustration for players who need breaks during intense sections.
Improve enemy AI consistency
While the enemy AI is praised, some inconsistencies were noted. Refining AI behavior could make encounters more predictable yet still terrifying.
Add post-credit content
The post-credit scene is appreciated, but adding more content or hints about the world’s fate could provide additional depth and replayability.
Expand on character backstories
Characters like Simon and Catherine are well-developed, but expanding on other crew members’ backstories could enrich the narrative and emotional impact.
Add more environmental variety
The underwater locations are impressive, but adding more environmental variety could enhance exploration and keep the setting fresh throughout the game.
Improve tutorial clarity
The beginning can be confusing for new players. Adding a clearer tutorial or guidance system could help players acclimate to the game’s mechanics and story.
Add more philosophical depth
The game’s philosophical themes are praised, but expanding on these ideas with more dialogue or narrative choices could deepen the intellectual engagement.
Reduce filler content
Some sections feel like filler. Removing or reworking these parts could tighten the narrative and improve the overall pacing of the game.
Add more dynamic sound design
The sound design is excellent, but adding more dynamic audio cues or adaptive music could enhance the atmosphere and player immersion.
Expand on Simon’s character arc
Simon’s journey is emotionally gripping, but expanding on his character arc, especially his internal struggles, could make the story even more impactful.

Positive

Despite being short, SOMA is what I'd call "a masterpiece". There aren't many games nowadays that discuss such deep and complex themes which is unfortunate. I loved the atmosphere and the mechanics of the game, it did give me a couple of jumpscares, but most importantly, it made me question everything, life, death, humanity, and my own existence. It's one of those very few games that would leave you with an empty feeling once you finish them, because of them being so good and yet so depressing. It was such an intriguing and interesting experience, that it got me hooked up from the very beginning of the gameplay. The visuals are stunning, the characters are somewhat complicated at first but you get to understand why later on. AI, science fiction, amazing graphics, story rich, horror, psychology, the whole package of what makes a perfect game is there and it's definitely worth your money and time. 10/10 recommended.

  • Sentiments

    • The game gave me a couple of jumpscares, which added to the horror experience but was not overwhelming.
    • The game made me question profound topics like life, death, humanity, and my own existence, which left a lasting impact on me.
    • I felt an empty feeling after finishing the game, which I attribute to its emotional depth and quality.
    • I found the gameplay intriguing and interesting, which kept me hooked from the very beginning.
    • I was impressed by the stunning visuals and the way the game's graphics enhanced the overall experience.
    • The characters were somewhat complicated at first, but I eventually understood their depth and motivations.
    • I believe the game is worth both the money and time due to its combination of AI, science fiction, horror, psychology, and a rich story.

This game is a true testament to the idea that video games are just as powerful an art medium as any other when created with intention and thoughtfulness. This game will never leave my brain, it offers more philosophical insight than most books do.

Positive

I like the deep sea. The unknown, unexplored, mystical, the darkness, loneliness and horror but in Soma it was pure terror...and I loved it! Great creative and scary monster design, an intense and terrifying atmosphere, varied puzzles, impressive underwater locations and a fantastic story. In fact, the story is the real gem here. It is about questions of existence, identity, being and consciousness paired with important decisions. On the other hand, I found the sneaking to be rather mediocre, but you can also play the game in “Safe Mode”. Then you don't need to sneak and you won't die. Fully recommended!

  • Sentiments

    • I found the monster design in Soma to be incredibly creative and scary, which added to the overall intensity and terror of the game.
    • The atmosphere in Soma is intense and terrifying, which I found to be a major highlight of the game.
    • I appreciated the varied puzzles in Soma, as they added depth and engagement to the gameplay experience.
    • The underwater locations in Soma are impressive and visually stunning, which I found to be a standout feature of the game.
    • I consider the story in Soma to be the real gem of the game, as it explores profound questions about existence, identity, being, and consciousness, paired with important decisions.
    • I found the sneaking mechanics in Soma to be rather mediocre, which slightly detracted from my overall enjoyment of the game.
    • I appreciate the inclusion of 'Safe Mode' in Soma, which allows players to avoid sneaking and eliminates the risk of dying, making the game more accessible.
    • I fully recommend Soma due to its combination of terrifying atmosphere, creative monster design, impressive locations, and a thought-provoking story.

Negative

Alright. This is one of those games that I wish we would have something like a 'maybe' review option for. It's not bad to the level that I would not recommend it completely. Yet I can't say I liked it that much and leaving a positive review doesn't sit right with me either. Eh... I'm settling on negative. Sorry, I guess it lost the coin toss. Let's get to the point. The entire setting is great! I love morally questionable actions being taken and or discussed and all that. That part was fine. Just like the story pushing you forward. Not something groundbreaking to be honest, but enjoyable. The problem is the game itself. I was hoping for a horror in addition to all that I mentioned above, and SOMA tries to be that experience, but just isn't. LISTEN, THIS IS A BIG DEAL, because if the game fails at the scary monster part, then you are just stuck with a really annoying pest that won't let you progress. AND THEY WERE. Sure, not everything have to land perfectly. However, to that level? It pulls you out of the experience like nothing else. There is also a LOT of walking. I get that it was probably to build up the atmosphere, but when the scary part fails and feels like a waiting game, the pointless strolling doesn't really help. Overall I think if SOMA was a movie I would love it. As it is now? Not so much. Try it or don't. I wouldn't just put too much hope into the scary factor.

  • Sentiments

    • I wish there was a 'maybe' review option because I can't fully recommend the game, but I also can't say I liked it enough to leave a positive review.
    • The setting is great, and I love the morally questionable actions and discussions in the story.
    • The story pushes you forward and is enjoyable, though not groundbreaking.
    • The game fails at being a horror experience, which is a big deal because it ruins the intended atmosphere.
    • The scary monsters feel like annoying pests that hinder progress rather than adding to the experience.
    • There is a lot of walking, which feels pointless when the scary elements fail to deliver.
    • The walking was likely meant to build atmosphere, but it doesn't help when the horror aspect falls flat.
    • If SOMA were a movie, I would love it, but as a game, it doesn't work as well for me.
    • I wouldn't recommend putting too much hope into the scary factor of the game.

Negative

SOMA has one of the most thought-provoking video game stories that I have ever encountered. I also liked that the underwater sections looked cool, and I really appreciate that the developers did not try to fill the game with cheap jumpscares, but instead they tried to build a tense atmosphere. Unfortunately, there wasn't really much else that I liked about this game: -The whole game was basically a boring walking simulator with a few monsters appearing from time to time. -The monsters weren't scary and it was super easy to avoid/bypass them. The game provides no challenge at all. -It took away from the immersion that the character models on computer screens were drawn. -The use of the mouse for opening doors, drawers, hatches etc. was very clunky. I would give SOMA a very good rating if it would be a movie. But, for me, a good game needs to have good playability, and I really didn't enjoy the gameplay of SOMA at all.

  • Sentiments

    • I found SOMA's story to be one of the most thought-provoking I have ever encountered in a video game.
    • I appreciated that the underwater sections looked visually impressive and added to the game's atmosphere.
    • I liked that the developers avoided cheap jumpscares and instead focused on building a tense atmosphere.
    • I felt the game was mostly a boring walking simulator with only occasional monster appearances.
    • I found the monsters to be unscary and too easy to avoid, which made the game lack challenge.
    • I was disappointed that the character models on computer screens were drawn, which broke immersion for me.
    • I thought the mouse controls for opening doors, drawers, and hatches were clunky and frustrating to use.
    • I believe SOMA would have been better as a movie rather than a game, as the story was its strongest aspect.
    • I did not enjoy the gameplay of SOMA at all, which made it hard for me to rate it highly as a game.

Negative

Rather visually dated walking simulator with badly illuminated areas. Majority of the game you can't see anything. I didn't encounter anything scary, tense or disturbing. Plot drags out and there's just so much walking, by the end I didn't get what did I even play. I wouldn't call it a time wasted, but that's basically it. Some areas under water looked cool though.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the game to be visually dated, which detracted from the overall experience.
    • The game has badly illuminated areas, making it difficult to see anything for the majority of the gameplay.
    • I did not encounter anything scary, tense, or disturbing, which was disappointing given the game's potential.
    • The plot drags out and feels unnecessarily prolonged, which made the experience less engaging.
    • There is an excessive amount of walking, which made the gameplay feel monotonous and tedious.
    • By the end of the game, I was left confused and unsure of what I had even played.
    • I wouldn't call the experience a complete waste of time, but it didn't leave a strong positive impression either.
    • Some underwater areas looked visually cool, which was a brief highlight in an otherwise lackluster experience.

Negative

You'll only like the story if you're open to the idea of transhumanism. As for someone who completely despise the idea and thinks anyone working on such things should be zero'd, this game trying to spoon feed me the idea was cringe inducing. The stealth sections in this game everyone seems to hate, but for me it was the only enjoyable part. If i could give this a neutral vote I would.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the story's focus on transhumanism to be cringe-inducing because I despise the idea and believe those working on it should be stopped.
    • The stealth sections in the game were the only enjoyable part for me, unlike others who seem to hate them.
    • I would give this game a neutral vote if possible, as my overall experience was neither strongly positive nor negative.

Negative

I've tried so hard to get into this game, the frame rate feels like its locked in 50fps even when i tried all the other frame rate settings in the game options up to apparently 240fps, and i even tried with a controller but its still juddery, it looks like a decent game and maybe i could have enjoyed it but i need frames that actually feel over 50fps to get into it, not for me sorry, 7900X3D, 4090, 1440p, 64GB RAM i even tried to unlock the frame rate but no way to do so...

  • Sentiments

    • I tried very hard to get into this game, but the frame rate feels locked at 50fps, which is frustrating and makes the experience unpleasant.
    • I attempted to adjust the frame rate settings up to 240fps, but the game still feels juddery and unresponsive.
    • I even tried using a controller, but the juddering issue persisted, which further detracted from the gameplay experience.
    • The game looks decent and has potential, but the technical issues prevent me from enjoying it.
    • I need a frame rate that feels consistently above 50fps to fully engage with the game, but this requirement is not met.
    • Despite having a high-end PC setup (7900X3D, 4090, 1440p, 64GB RAM), the game's performance issues remain unresolved.
    • I tried to unlock the frame rate, but there was no way to do so, which added to my frustration.
    • The game is not for me due to its technical shortcomings, which overshadow its potential.
