This isn't just another horror game — it's a masterpiece with an amazing atmosphere, captivating story, and voice actors who brought the characters to life with incredible depth and emotion. The fact that I can never experience this game again for the first time is agonizing. Truly an unforgettable game.
Please play this game. You will never forget it. it's one of those games that you stare up at the ceiling at night thinking about. It's a game that will always stick with you, and the themes within it are becoming more and more relevant by the day. Take a gamble on this masterpiece worth far more than what you pay for it, and you will not regret it.
Despite being short, SOMA is what I'd call "a masterpiece". There aren't many games nowadays that discuss such deep and complex themes which is unfortunate. I loved the atmosphere and the mechanics of the game, it did give me a couple of jumpscares, but most importantly, it made me question everything, life, death, humanity, and my own existence. It's one of those very few games that would leave you with an empty feeling once you finish them, because of them being so good and yet so depressing. It was such an intriguing and interesting experience, that it got me hooked up from the very beginning of the gameplay. The visuals are stunning, the characters are somewhat complicated at first but you get to understand why later on. AI, science fiction, amazing graphics, story rich, horror, psychology, the whole package of what makes a perfect game is there and it's definitely worth your money and time. 10/10 recommended.
This game is a true testament to the idea that video games are just as powerful an art medium as any other when created with intention and thoughtfulness. This game will never leave my brain, it offers more philosophical insight than most books do.
I like the deep sea. The unknown, unexplored, mystical, the darkness, loneliness and horror but in Soma it was pure terror...and I loved it! Great creative and scary monster design, an intense and terrifying atmosphere, varied puzzles, impressive underwater locations and a fantastic story. In fact, the story is the real gem here. It is about questions of existence, identity, being and consciousness paired with important decisions. On the other hand, I found the sneaking to be rather mediocre, but you can also play the game in “Safe Mode”. Then you don't need to sneak and you won't die. Fully recommended!
Alright. This is one of those games that I wish we would have something like a 'maybe' review option for. It's not bad to the level that I would not recommend it completely. Yet I can't say I liked it that much and leaving a positive review doesn't sit right with me either. Eh... I'm settling on negative. Sorry, I guess it lost the coin toss. Let's get to the point. The entire setting is great! I love morally questionable actions being taken and or discussed and all that. That part was fine. Just like the story pushing you forward. Not something groundbreaking to be honest, but enjoyable. The problem is the game itself. I was hoping for a horror in addition to all that I mentioned above, and SOMA tries to be that experience, but just isn't. LISTEN, THIS IS A BIG DEAL, because if the game fails at the scary monster part, then you are just stuck with a really annoying pest that won't let you progress. AND THEY WERE. Sure, not everything have to land perfectly. However, to that level? It pulls you out of the experience like nothing else. There is also a LOT of walking. I get that it was probably to build up the atmosphere, but when the scary part fails and feels like a waiting game, the pointless strolling doesn't really help. Overall I think if SOMA was a movie I would love it. As it is now? Not so much. Try it or don't. I wouldn't just put too much hope into the scary factor.
SOMA has one of the most thought-provoking video game stories that I have ever encountered. I also liked that the underwater sections looked cool, and I really appreciate that the developers did not try to fill the game with cheap jumpscares, but instead they tried to build a tense atmosphere. Unfortunately, there wasn't really much else that I liked about this game: -The whole game was basically a boring walking simulator with a few monsters appearing from time to time. -The monsters weren't scary and it was super easy to avoid/bypass them. The game provides no challenge at all. -It took away from the immersion that the character models on computer screens were drawn. -The use of the mouse for opening doors, drawers, hatches etc. was very clunky. I would give SOMA a very good rating if it would be a movie. But, for me, a good game needs to have good playability, and I really didn't enjoy the gameplay of SOMA at all.
Rather visually dated walking simulator with badly illuminated areas. Majority of the game you can't see anything. I didn't encounter anything scary, tense or disturbing. Plot drags out and there's just so much walking, by the end I didn't get what did I even play. I wouldn't call it a time wasted, but that's basically it. Some areas under water looked cool though.
You'll only like the story if you're open to the idea of transhumanism. As for someone who completely despise the idea and thinks anyone working on such things should be zero'd, this game trying to spoon feed me the idea was cringe inducing. The stealth sections in this game everyone seems to hate, but for me it was the only enjoyable part. If i could give this a neutral vote I would.
I've tried so hard to get into this game, the frame rate feels like its locked in 50fps even when i tried all the other frame rate settings in the game options up to apparently 240fps, and i even tried with a controller but its still juddery, it looks like a decent game and maybe i could have enjoyed it but i need frames that actually feel over 50fps to get into it, not for me sorry, 7900X3D, 4090, 1440p, 64GB RAM i even tried to unlock the frame rate but no way to do so...
