Community review

Dive into the breathtaking alien ocean world of *Subnautica*, an underwater survival adventure game that blends exploration, crafting, and mystery. With an AI Community Rating of 89.88%, players praise its immersive atmosphere, stunning visuals, and unique gameplay. From sunlit coral reefs to eerie deep-sea trenches, the game offers a vast, open world teeming with life—both beautiful and dangerous. Craft equipment, build underwater habitats, and unravel the secrets of an alien planet while managing your oxygen and resources. However, some players note frustrations with bugs, particularly with vehicles clipping through terrain, and the lack of an in-game map for navigation. Despite these issues, *Subnautica* is hailed as a masterpiece for its gripping story, immersive world, and sense of wonder. If you enjoy survival games with a mix of beauty and terror, this is a must-play.

What the community wishes

Improve VR controls and support
VR controls are egregious and difficult to enjoy. The game should either improve VR support or remove the VR tag to avoid misleading players.
Add in-game map for navigation
The lack of an in-game map, especially in late-game areas with limited visibility, makes navigation frustrating. Adding a map would improve the exploration experience.
Fix clipping and vehicle bugs
Vehicles clipping through the ocean floor is a recurring issue. This bug can be devastating and requires a fix to prevent loss of progress.
Reduce back-and-forth travel time
Excessive back-and-forth traveling takes up too much time. Streamlining travel or adding faster transportation options would improve pacing.
Improve creature clipping in deep areas
Creatures in deeper areas frequently clip in and out of the map, which is annoying and immersion-breaking. This issue needs to be addressed.
Enhance base building mechanics
Base building is enjoyable but limited. Expanding customization options and functionality would make the feature more engaging.
Add more alien-like creature designs
The ocean life often feels too Earth-like. Introducing more alien and unique creature designs would enhance the game's otherworldly atmosphere.
Improve lore readability in dangerous areas
Reading lore entries in dangerous areas feels rushed due to the risk of death. Adding safe zones or pause functionality for lore would help.
Optimize chunk loading for graphics
Chunks of land often fail to load until the player is very close, which breaks immersion. Optimizing chunk loading would improve visual consistency.
Expand on Below Zero's improvements
Below Zero improved visuals but lacked the original's charm. Combining the strengths of both games in future updates or sequels would be ideal.
Add more diverse late-game content
The late-game could benefit from more diverse activities and challenges to maintain engagement after the main story is completed.
Improve coop mod stability
The Nitrox coop mod is buggy and unstable. Official support or improvements to coop functionality would enhance multiplayer experiences.
Add more intuitive progression hints
Players often struggle to know where to go or what to do next. Adding subtle hints or guidance would improve the progression experience.
Expand creature ecosystem interactions
While the ecosystem is detailed, expanding interactions between creatures and the environment would make the world feel even more alive.
Address minor bugs for polish
Minor bugs, though not game-breaking, detract from the overall experience. Polishing these issues would elevate the game's quality.
Add more horror elements in late-game
The horror elements are effective but could be expanded in late-game areas to maintain tension and fear throughout the experience.
Improve inventory management
Inventory space is often insufficient for collecting resources and scanning creatures. Expanding inventory or adding storage solutions would help.
Add more alien biomes
The game could benefit from more unique and alien biomes to enhance exploration and discovery.
Optimize performance for lower-end PCs
The game runs decently but could be better optimized for lower-end PCs to ensure a smooth experience for all players.
Add more post-story content
After completing the story, players often crave more content. Adding post-story activities or challenges would extend replayability.

Negative

Almost a 20hr playthrough ruined due to a game breaking bug which causes you to fall through the floor in one of the last alien bases in the game. Can't load back as save file is now stuck in the ground. Really pood from the devs as forums show this has been an issue since at least 2020 and it's now 2024 and this bug still exists. Game is absolutely fantastic just ruined by something so simple.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel extremely frustrated and disappointed because a game-breaking bug ruined my nearly 20-hour playthrough, causing me to fall through the floor in one of the last alien bases.
    • I am upset that my save file is now stuck in the ground, making it impossible to continue or load back to a previous state.
    • I am angry with the developers for not fixing this bug, as forums indicate it has been an issue since at least 2020 and it is now 2024.
    • I find it unacceptable that such a simple bug has persisted for years, significantly impacting the player experience.
    • Despite the bug, I genuinely believe the game is absolutely fantastic and enjoyable.
    • I feel let down by the developers for not addressing a critical issue that has been known for years.
    • I am disappointed that such a great game is marred by a preventable and long-standing bug.
    • I feel a sense of wasted effort and time due to the game-breaking bug ruining my progress.
    • I appreciate the game's quality and design, but the unresolved bug overshadows the positive aspects.
    • I am disheartened that a simple issue has not been resolved, despite the game's overall excellence.

Negative

I bought this game only to play in VR and quickly realized that this game has zero support for VR aside from being able to see it with a headset on. This is intentionally misleading to me, and the developers should either take the VR tag off or fix it. I do not recommend this title if you wanted it for VR like I did.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel misled by the game's VR support, as it only allows viewing with a headset on and lacks proper VR functionality.
    • I believe the developers should either remove the VR tag or improve the VR support to meet expectations.
    • I do not recommend this game to anyone who is specifically looking for a VR experience, as it does not deliver on that promise.
    • I bought this game solely for VR and was disappointed by the lack of meaningful VR features.
    • I find the VR implementation to be intentionally misleading, which has negatively impacted my experience.

Negative

Overrated tosh. Not scary. Grindy. Directionless. Too much RNG. Poor QoL that requires modding to make it playable (I had to mod in proper inventory management, hotkeys, and an actual map). You're supposed to explore for the joy of it, but exploration is A) disorienting and B) constantly stymied by you lacking some resource or upgrade, which then means you have to wander around the ocean floor hoping to find the RNG recipe in one of the places that your current resource/upgrade threshold is capable of reaching. It's deeply unrewarding to play this way, constantly getting turned around and lost, so you end up using Google every time there's something you need to find, which defeats the purpose of the game's design. This is game is stupendously overrated nonsense.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the game to be overrated and not living up to its hype, which makes me feel disappointed.
    • I do not find the game scary at all, which is a significant letdown given its genre.
    • I feel the game is too grindy, making it tedious and unrewarding to play.
    • I find the game directionless, lacking clear guidance or purpose, which frustrates me.
    • I think there is too much reliance on RNG, which makes progression feel unfair and frustrating.
    • I believe the quality of life features are poor, requiring mods to make the game playable, which is a major inconvenience.
    • I find exploration disorienting and unrewarding, as it often leads to getting lost or stuck due to lacking resources or upgrades.
    • I feel forced to use Google to find necessary items or locations, which defeats the purpose of the game's design and breaks immersion.
    • I think the game's design is deeply flawed, making it feel unrewarding and frustrating to play.
    • I consider the game to be overrated nonsense, which leaves me with a strong negative impression overall.

Negative

After about 50 hrs, my file got corrupted and was frozen on save screen. I had high hopes for this game, i really enjoyed it, but after all my 50 hrs down the drain, i don't recommend this game due to this bug. After a while, things start to disappear on the map, fishes, corals, then lava pools etc., thats when I cant save the game anymore

  • Sentiments

    • I had high hopes for this game and really enjoyed it initially, which made the experience positive at first.
    • After about 50 hours of gameplay, my save file got corrupted and froze on the save screen, which was extremely frustrating and disappointing.
    • Losing all 50 hours of progress due to a bug made me feel like my time and effort were wasted.
    • I no longer recommend this game because of the game-breaking bug that ruined my experience.
    • Over time, things like fishes, corals, and lava pools started disappearing from the map, which was confusing and concerning.
    • The game became unplayable when I could no longer save my progress, which was a major issue.
    • The initial enjoyment of the game was overshadowed by the technical issues I encountered later.

Negative

I enjoyed playing the game itself, despite some technical issues like textures popping in very late, some repetitive mechanics and some janky animations. I would recommend it, but the game erased a whole, long session's worth of my progress when quitting, saying I saved "5 minutes ago", but when loading the next day, it returned me to where I was 6+ hours ago. While I wanted to see the end, I don't have it in me to grind the same stuff again.

  • Sentiments

    • I enjoyed playing the game itself, which indicates a positive experience with the core gameplay.
    • I encountered technical issues like textures popping in very late, which was frustrating and impacted my experience.
    • Some mechanics felt repetitive, which made parts of the game less engaging.
    • I noticed some janky animations, which detracted from the overall polish of the game.
    • I would recommend the game despite its flaws, showing a generally positive overall impression.
    • The game erased a long session's worth of progress, which was extremely frustrating and demotivating.
    • The save system falsely indicated I saved 5 minutes ago, but it loaded a save from 6+ hours earlier, causing significant frustration.
    • I wanted to see the end of the game, indicating a strong interest in the story or content.
    • I don't have it in me to grind the same stuff again, showing a loss of motivation due to the progress loss.
