AI Review

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition is a legendary RPG that immerses players in a richly detailed, vibrant world. With an AI Community Rating of 86.89%, it’s hailed as one of the best RPGs of all time. Create any character you imagine, from noble warriors to sinister assassins, and explore a vast, open world filled with quests, dungeons, and secrets. The game’s groundbreaking Radiant AI system brings NPCs to life with 24/7 schedules, making the world feel alive. The Game of the Year Edition includes the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions, adding epic quests and new lands to explore. Fans praise its story, quests, and nostalgic charm, with standout features like the immersive soundtrack and freeform gameplay. However, some note dated combat mechanics, repetitive dungeon designs, and occasional bugs. If you love classic RPGs with deep lore and exploration, Oblivion is a must-play, though modern gamers may need to overlook its aged elements.

What the community wishes

Fix broken level scaling system
The level scaling system is poorly balanced, making common enemies like skeletons disproportionately strong at higher levels, which detracts from gameplay enjoyment and progression.
Improve outdated combat mechanics
Combat feels clunky and outdated compared to modern RPGs. Improvements to fluidity, responsiveness, and variety in combat mechanics would enhance the overall experience.
Address repetitive dungeon design
Dungeons feel repetitive and lack variety in layout and enemy placement. More unique and engaging dungeon designs would improve exploration and replayability.
Update NPC models and animations
NPC models are outdated and often described as 'hideous' or 'scary.' Updating character models and animations would improve immersion and visual appeal.
Revamp speechcraft mini-game
The speechcraft mini-game is tedious and makes persuasion skills feel irrelevant. A more intuitive and engaging system for dialogue and persuasion is needed.
Fix DLC activation issues
DLC activation is confusing and requires manual steps, leading to frustration. A more streamlined and user-friendly DLC activation process is necessary.
Improve AI behavior and interactions
NPC AI is often goofy and lacks depth. More realistic and varied AI behaviors would enhance immersion and make the world feel more alive.
Optimize for modern hardware
The game struggles to run smoothly on modern hardware, requiring extensive patches. Better optimization for current systems would improve performance and accessibility.
Add more meaningful quest outcomes
Many quests lack meaningful consequences or branching outcomes. Adding more impactful choices and varied endings would increase replayability and player agency.
Enhance magic system depth
The magic system feels neutered compared to Morrowind. Expanding spell variety and customization options would make magic more engaging and versatile.
Improve voice acting quality
Voice acting often feels rushed and emotionless. Higher-quality voice performances would enhance storytelling and character immersion.
Address repetitive quest structures
Many quests follow repetitive structures, leading to monotony. More diverse and creative quest designs would keep players engaged.
Update indoor environment graphics
Indoor environments, especially caves, feel dated and unappealing. Modernizing textures and lighting in these areas would improve visual quality.
Add more faction depth and variety
Factions lack depth and meaningful progression. Expanding faction storylines and mechanics would make joining them more rewarding and immersive.
Improve character customization options
Character customization feels limited compared to modern RPGs. Adding more options for appearance, skills, and playstyles would enhance role-playing.
Fix broken quest bugs
Many quests are prone to breaking, even with fan patches. Addressing these bugs would improve the overall stability and enjoyment of the game.
Enhance world interactivity
The world feels static and lacks interactivity. Adding more dynamic elements and interactive objects would make exploration more engaging.
Improve enemy variety and AI
Enemy types and behaviors are repetitive. Introducing more diverse enemies and smarter AI would make combat more challenging and interesting.
Expand crafting system depth
Crafting systems like alchemy feel shallow. Adding more depth and complexity to crafting would make it a more rewarding gameplay element.
Modernize UI and controls
The UI and controls feel outdated and clunky. Modernizing these elements would improve accessibility and user experience.

The GOATed Elder Scrolls game. This game has not aged well visually but it is a classic nonetheless. This game is better than Skyrim by a longshot. You don't even need mods to make this game interesting even after playing it 100 times. By azura by azura by azura

    • I notice the repeated phrase 'By azura by azura by azura,' which seems to be a nostalgic or humorous reference, but its sentiment is neutral as it doesn't convey a clear opinion.

Negative

Literally only leaving a review because Steam is being dumb on this one, and its a negative review so hopefully people will read it. This comes with the Deluxe Edition DLC. Both the community and Steam support will say it doesnt and try to get you to buy the Deluxe edition (Its $20 and you have to DELETE THIS VERSION OF THE GAME from your steam library completely before you are allowed to buy it) instead. You do not have to. To activate the 9 Deluxe DLCs, all you need to do is this. When you first start the launcher for the first time, after setting the graphics settings, click on Data Files. In there you will see a list of the installed DLCs. If you start the game now, none of them will work (This is why its assumed that the regular Game of the Year edition didnt come with the DLCs) but also in that list at the very bottom will be an entry labeled Oblivion.esm with its checkbox empty. Once you activate that check box and start the game, poof, all of a sudden you will be given notifications of all of the DLCs being active in your game and will function normally. If you are a Steam Deck user like myself, you may not see the box so instead just double click on Oblivion.esm and it will activate and the box will appear. There, I just saved you 20 bucks and/or a trip to some dubious download/key site all to obtain 9 DLC packs that USED to be free before Bethesda tried to charge for them here on Steam.

  • Sentiments

    • I am frustrated with Steam's handling of the Deluxe Edition DLC, as it incorrectly claims the DLC is not included, forcing users to jump through unnecessary hoops.
    • I feel annoyed that Steam support and the community are misleading users into thinking they need to purchase the Deluxe Edition separately.
    • I am relieved to have found a workaround to activate the DLCs without spending an extra $20, saving money and avoiding dubious download sites.
    • I am disappointed that Bethesda is now charging for DLCs that were previously free, which feels like a cash grab.
    • I appreciate the detailed steps provided to activate the DLCs, which are helpful for users like myself who want to avoid unnecessary purchases.
    • I am frustrated that the game launcher does not clearly indicate the DLCs are included, leading to confusion and wasted time.
    • I feel satisfied that I was able to resolve the issue and enjoy the full game experience without additional costs.
    • I am concerned about the lack of clarity and transparency from both Steam and Bethesda regarding the DLCs, which creates a poor user experience.
    • I am grateful for the community-driven solutions that help users navigate these issues, even when official support fails.
    • I feel frustrated that Steam requires users to delete the game entirely before allowing them to purchase the Deluxe Edition, which is an unnecessary hassle.

Negative

I have to give a negative review after many years. I purchased the original iteration of the GOTY edition which included all of the downloadable content, but coming back to play after some time I find that they have removed the add-on dlc from the GOTY edition leaving just Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine and now they are requiring me to purchase the GOTY Deluxe edition to regain access to content that I have already purchased.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel disappointed and frustrated because the downloadable content I originally purchased with the GOTY edition has been removed, and I now need to buy the GOTY Deluxe edition to regain access to it.
    • I am unhappy with the decision to remove add-on DLC from the GOTY edition, leaving only Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine.
    • I feel misled as I now have to repurchase content that I already owned and paid for.
    • I am dissatisfied with the company's approach to handling previously purchased content.
    • I am giving a negative review after many years of being a customer, which shows how strongly I feel about this issue.
    • I feel that the removal of DLC from the GOTY edition is unfair to long-time customers like myself.
    • I am frustrated that the GOTY Deluxe edition is now required to access content I already owned.
    • I feel that the company is prioritizing profit over customer satisfaction by forcing repurchases.
    • I am unhappy with the lack of transparency regarding the changes to the GOTY edition.
    • I feel that this situation has negatively impacted my trust in the company and their products.

Negative
I hope lord dagon take this game into the oblivion
morrowind is 10000000 better than this crap. at the 1st level you can kill basic enemies with 3 or 4 arrow shot and at the level 45 with best gear I shot a skeleton hero near 150 times in order to kill it despite the fact this enemy is a common enemy and it gets worst when you think about the more powerful enemies, remember how hard it was to get a daedric armor set in morrowind, now all the outlaws bask in daedric and glass armors and weapons, quests are way boring, story is trash compared to the morrorwind, NPC models are hideous and scary(except sheogorath's model which in my opinion is best model in the game), every thing in this game has problem

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that Morrowind is significantly better than this game, as this game fails to meet my expectations in comparison.
    • I am frustrated with the game's difficulty scaling, as basic enemies are too easy to kill at low levels but become excessively hard at higher levels.
    • I find it absurd that common enemies like skeleton heroes require an excessive number of hits to defeat, even with the best gear.
    • I am disappointed with the abundance of high-tier gear like Daedric and Glass armor, which feels less rewarding compared to Morrowind.
    • I think the quests in this game are boring and lack the depth and engagement I experienced in Morrowind.
    • I believe the story is inferior to Morrowind's, as it fails to captivate or impress me.
    • I find the NPC models in this game to be hideous and scary, which detracts from my overall experience.
    • I appreciate Sheogorath's model, as I consider it the best in the game and a rare highlight.
    • I feel that everything in this game has problems, which makes it a deeply flawed experience.

Negative

The story is good and the gameplay is good too, but I cannot recommend the game on two things. The speechcraft mini-game is a chore to deal with, and I'm glad no other game has ever used it because it makes leveling up your charisma/persuasion/intimidation ability useless because it's more about mastering the speechcraft mini-game than anything else. I'm not sure if it's an issue of compatibility with newer versions/updates of Windows or Oblivion uses a buggier version of Gamebryo than Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but I bought the GOTY edition so I can enjoy all of the quests the game has to offer, and despite installing fan patches and such to help fix bugs. I eventually got to a point in the game where most of the quests broke.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the story of the game to be good, which adds to the overall enjoyment of the experience.
    • I think the gameplay is good, which makes the game engaging and fun to play.
    • I cannot recommend the game due to two major issues, which significantly detract from the overall experience.
    • I find the speechcraft mini-game to be a chore, as it feels tedious and poorly designed.
    • I believe the speechcraft mini-game makes leveling up charisma, persuasion, and intimidation abilities feel useless, as it focuses more on mastering the mini-game than actual skill progression.
    • I am glad no other game has used the speechcraft mini-game, as it seems like a flawed mechanic that doesn't enhance gameplay.
    • I suspect there may be compatibility issues with newer versions of Windows or a buggier version of Gamebryo used in Oblivion, which affects the game's performance.
    • I bought the GOTY edition to enjoy all the quests, but I encountered significant issues with quests breaking, which ruined the experience.
    • I installed fan patches to fix bugs, but they were not enough to resolve the quest-breaking issues, which left me frustrated.
    • I reached a point in the game where most quests broke, making it nearly unplayable and disappointing.

Negative

Be mindful of which version you buy. Purchased the standard GOTY edition instead of the Deluxe by mistake, and Steam refused to issue a refund. It would be one thing if you could upgrade to the Deluxe edition at a reduced price, but in order to gain access to the Deluxe edition's DLC content you would need to purchase the game at full price again.

  • Sentiments

    • I am frustrated that I mistakenly purchased the standard GOTY edition instead of the Deluxe edition, and Steam refused to issue a refund.
    • I feel disappointed that there is no option to upgrade to the Deluxe edition at a reduced price.
    • I am unhappy that to gain access to the Deluxe edition's DLC content, I would need to purchase the game again at full price.
    • I am dissatisfied with the lack of flexibility in Steam's refund policy regarding this purchase.
    • I feel misled by the lack of clear options or warnings when purchasing the wrong edition of the game.
