With an impressive AI Community Rating of 92.4%, this indie game follows Danya and his alien friend Juniper as they navigate space, repair their ship, and encounter the mysterious Brahve. Players praise the game’s stunning art, heartfelt story, and full English voice acting, but some note the story feels short, with pacing issues in the middle. Featuring 55K words, 25+ CGs, and 4 endings, The Symbiant offers 6+ hours of gameplay, though some players wish for more romantic moments and impactful choices. If you love emotional storytelling, space exploration, and LGBTQ+ representation, this game is a must-play.

What the community wishes

Increase story length and depth
The story lacks stakes and depth, with interesting conflicts introduced but not developed. The game feels short, with some players finishing in 2 hours, and the dialogue options lack significant impact. Expanding the story and making choices more meaningful would improve engagement.
Improve dialogue naturalness
Dialogue often feels stiff and overly technical, as if characters are discussing a mortgage rather than a relationship. Making conversations more natural and less like a therapy session would enhance immersion.
Add more visual storytelling
Some players feel the story relies too much on narration and dialogue. Adding more visual scenes, especially for key moments like port stops or Brahve's research, would make the world feel more alive and engaging.
Expand on side characters
While the main characters are well-developed, side characters like Juniper could benefit from more depth and screen time. Expanding their roles and interactions would add richness to the story.
Enhance replayability with impactful choices
Dialogue choices currently lack significant impact on the story. Adding more branching paths and meaningful consequences would encourage players to replay the game multiple times.
Address inconsistent character development
Danya's personality feels inconsistent depending on player choices, which detracts from the character's completeness. Ensuring consistent character development across all routes would improve the narrative.
Add more romantic moments
Players want more romantic interactions, such as kissing scenes, to strengthen the emotional connection between characters. Including more intimate moments would enhance the romantic experience.
Clarify NSFW content availability
Some players are confused about how to access the NSFW content. Providing clearer instructions or integrating the patch more seamlessly would improve user experience.
Increase CG variety
The game's CGs are beautiful but repetitive. Adding more variety and unique scenes, especially for different endings, would make the game visually more engaging.
Improve pacing in the middle
The story starts and ends strong but feels rushed in the middle. Slowing down the pacing and adding more development in the middle sections would create a more balanced narrative.
Add more world-building visuals
The game's world-building is strong but relies heavily on dialogue. Adding more visual representations of the universe, such as alien species or locations, would make the setting more immersive.
Enhance emotional depth in endings
While the endings are creative, some players feel they lack emotional depth. Adding more emotional weight and complexity to the endings would make them more memorable.
Improve scene replay functionality
The scene replay feature is hard to navigate, with ambiguous numbering. Making it easier to identify and replay specific scenes would enhance user experience.
Add more gameplay hours
The game is short, with some players finishing in under 5 hours. Adding more content or extending the story would justify the price point and satisfy players looking for longer experiences.
Balance educational tone
The game's focus on teaching consent and open-mindedness can feel preachy. Balancing the educational tone with more organic storytelling would make the message more impactful.
Fix achievement bugs
Some players encountered bugs with achievements not unlocking. Ensuring all achievements work as intended would improve the overall polish of the game.
Add more alien/monster elements
Players enjoyed the alien and monster themes but wanted more exploration of these elements. Expanding on the alien aspects, such as Brahve's species, would add uniqueness to the story.
Improve conflict resolution
Conflicts are often resolved too quickly, reducing tension. Allowing conflicts to develop and resolve more naturally would make the story more engaging.
Add more variety in music
While the soundtrack is praised, some players want more variety in the music. Adding more tracks or dynamic music changes would enhance the atmosphere.
Expand on Oatith's storyline
The Oatith route feels underdeveloped compared to other storylines. Expanding on this character's role and conflicts would add depth to the narrative.

Not super long. I cleared in 4 hours with all achievements but price point is fair. Loved the plot and characters way more than I expected. The lore was thought out more so than most visual novels that focus on uhhhh "adult situations." English voice acting was pretty professional for a smaller project and art was fantastic. Shout out to the artist, seriously top notch. I'm stoked to see what this team comes up with next.

I love it. I was waiting for half a year to finally play the full version. And today was my lucky day, I guess. And for all the people who have a problem with the nsfw version or can't download it on steam: Go on itchi.io -> search The symbiant (18+) and click on it -> scroll down the page -> click on adult patch for steam and download it -> go on steam again -> open the folder from the game -> open the folder 'game' -> put the adult patch in there And here you go! Have fun with your nsfw version!

I did NOT expect the *ahem* moments to to voiced as well. MY. LORD. Give me a moment to drool over what I have just witnessed. Amazing story. Lovely main characters. I will SO be looking forward to the release of the sequel. But before that happens, I have a question for the creators: So how the heck am I supposed to allow myself to go through any ending that isn't the happy ending? I refuse to allow these space cuties to suffer in any way. How dare you give that kind of option. ;-;

  • Sentiments

    • I was pleasantly surprised by the voiced *ahem* moments, which added an unexpected layer of immersion to the game.
    • I am in awe of the amazing story, which deeply captivated me and left a lasting impression.

    • I am eagerly looking forward to the release of the sequel, as the game has left me wanting more.
    • I am conflicted about the multiple endings, as I refuse to accept any outcome that isn't the happy ending for the characters.
    • I feel strongly protective of the characters and do not want them to suffer, which makes me question the inclusion of non-happy endings.
    • I am emotionally attached to the 'space cuties' and find it difficult to imagine them experiencing any form of hardship.
    • I am impressed by the game's ability to evoke such strong emotional reactions, making it a memorable experience.

Never thought i'd be into tentacles but this game unlocked something in me. Jokes aside, wow, this game is awesome. I only reached one ending so far but I had to leave a review. The writing is one of the best I've encountered in bl games. Ost is really good, and I can find myself listening to the tracks even when i'm not playing. Danya's and Brahve's relationship feels natural and their banter is perfect. I fell in love with them in 6 hours and don't know what to do with myself now lol. Also the voice acting blew my mind. Super excited to play After Stories when it comes out!

Negative

Its... fine? The actual story has zero stakes. They keep introducing things that make me go "Oh that's interesting, that must be the outside conflict" only for it to never be brought up again or immediately resolved. The art is beautiful and the voices are great. The VAs did a really solid job of sounding believable and charming. I wish their dialogue wasn't so stiff. They talk like they just walked out of therapy directly into a sex ed video. It's very strange. I can appreciate the focus on trying to portray the relationship as very healthy and open but they sound like they're actively being judged. Was the author paranoid about being called out? That's all I could think about when I heard them use technical terms for their relationship like they were discussing a mortgage. It's kind of a slideshow of random boring chitchat before the next sex scene, so I don't think it's worth the price. I have NO IDEA where they pulled "6 hours of gameplay" from because I finished it in 2 hours. It's not compelling enough to warrent a replay. I checked the different options in the dialogue trees and they're not impactful enough for me to spend another 2 hours on it. I want to see more from this studio but I hope they remember the 'novel' part of 'visual novel'.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel the story lacks stakes and fails to develop interesting conflicts, as introduced elements are either ignored or resolved too quickly.
    • I appreciate the beautiful art and find the visuals to be a strong point of the game.
    • I think the voice acting is solid, with the VAs delivering believable and charming performances.
    • I find the dialogue to be stiff and unnatural, as if the characters are overly cautious or judged in their conversations.
    • I appreciate the effort to portray a healthy and open relationship, but the use of technical terms feels forced and awkward.
    • I feel the game is more like a slideshow of boring chitchat between sex scenes, which doesn't justify its price.
    • I am disappointed by the misleading claim of '6 hours of gameplay,' as I finished it in just 2 hours.
    • I don't find the game compelling enough to warrant a replay, as the dialogue options lack meaningful impact.
    • I am interested in seeing more from this studio but hope they focus more on the 'novel' aspect of visual novels in future projects.

Negative

well-drawn cgs and surprisingly decent dialogue. however, likely due to my growing insensitivity to nsfw scenes, the latter 2/3 of the story felt dull and strenuous. p.s. a warm reminder that the game's main character is not the hot blue alien but some phallic plant. if you are not a big fan of tentacles, some parts of the story could be huge turn-offs.

  • Sentiments

    • I appreciate the well-drawn CGs in the game, as they enhance the visual experience and add to the overall quality.
    • I found the dialogue to be surprisingly decent, which made the interactions more engaging and enjoyable.
    • I felt that the latter two-thirds of the story became dull and strenuous, likely due to my growing insensitivity to NSFW scenes.
    • I was reminded that the main character is not the hot blue alien but a phallic plant, which could be a turn-off for some players.
    • I noted that if someone is not a fan of tentacles, certain parts of the story might be unappealing or off-putting.

Negative

I was enjoying it until it became all about tentacle fetish stuff and forcing backwards woke mentalities (no kink shaming, no polyamory judging, ask pronouns shit) more than the actual couple in the game which was fairly early on. Really turned me off the game. That's not romantic at all. All I wanted was to watch two men fall in love with each other, fuck and appreciate each other, get off on each other. Why is that too much to ask? Why does all this creepy nonsense have to be involved? Why are people like this? Why can't I just enjoy a yaoi that is normal and respectful to what love and a respectful / loving relationship actually is? Not accepting shallow unfulfilling kinks and shit. Dayum. And I paid for this trash. Sad. I was really enjoying it at first, lovely art and all, but the direction it went it makes me feel disgusted with it to the point I cannot continue.

  • Sentiments

    • I was enjoying the game initially, appreciating the lovely art and the premise of two men falling in love.
    • I felt disappointed and turned off when the game shifted focus to tentacle fetish content and what I perceive as forced 'woke' mentalities.
    • I found the inclusion of kink-related content and pronoun discussions to be unromantic and unrelated to the core love story I wanted to experience.
    • I felt disgusted by the direction the game took, to the point where I could not continue playing.
    • I was frustrated that the game did not deliver a normal, respectful yaoi relationship, which is what I was hoping for.
    • I felt that the game's focus on shallow and unfulfilling kinks detracted from the meaningful and loving relationship I expected.
    • I regretted paying for the game, as it did not meet my expectations and left me feeling dissatisfied.
    • I was initially drawn to the game because of its art style and the promise of a romantic story between two men.
    • I felt that the game's narrative choices were creepy and unnecessary, which ruined my enjoyment.
    • I was saddened by the fact that the game, which started so promisingly, ended up being something I could not appreciate.

• Sentiments

    • I found the visual design of the game to be beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.
    • The voice acting was emotional but not overdone, which I appreciated.
    • The second half of the game, after resolving conflicts with a certain character and exploring branching endings, felt somewhat engaging, though not outstanding.
    • The bad ending, where all resources are wasted and the worst decisions are made, was surprisingly interesting and refreshing, as it deviated from the typical overly happy endings.
    • I enjoyed the occasional good jokes and self-referential humor scattered throughout the game.
    • The dynamics between unfamiliar characters felt rushed and unrealistic, as if they were forced into intimacy too quickly.
    • The main character lacked depth and presence, even in terms of sound design and written development.
    • Three out of four endings were overly sweet and lacked conflict, making them feel unrealistic and unsatisfying.
    • The setup of plot elements, like foreshadowing and dramatic tension, felt ineffective and unnecessary, as they didn’t contribute meaningfully to the story.
    • Overall, the story felt toothless and overly sweet, and the price did not justify the quality of the narrative.
