The Walking Dead is a gripping five-part adventure horror game set in the same universe as Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic series. Play as Lee Everett, a convicted criminal seeking redemption in a world overrun by the undead. With a focus on emotional storytelling and impactful choices, the game delivers a tailored experience where your decisions shape the narrative. The AI Community Rating of 89.84% reflects its strengths: a deeply emotional story, memorable characters, and a masterpiece-level experience. Fans praise its ability to evoke strong emotions and recommend it as a must-play for story-driven gamers. However, some critique its simplistic puzzles, dated animations, and the illusion of choice, where decisions often feel less impactful than expected. Despite minor bugs and occasional pacing issues, The Walking Dead remains a standout title for its heart-wrenching narrative and immersive atmosphere. If you love games that prioritize story over action, this is a journey worth taking.

What the community wishes

Optimize for modern hardware
The game runs well but could benefit from optimizations for modern hardware to ensure smoother performance.
Fix audio cutouts in cutscenes
Audio frequently cuts out too soon before cutscenes or is completely missing, which disrupts immersion and needs to be addressed.
Address minor bugs
The game has minor bugs that persist and should be fixed to improve the overall experience.
Improve illusion of choice impact
The game creates an illusion of impactful choices, but many decisions don’t significantly alter the story. Enhancing the consequences of choices would improve replayability.
Enhance quick-time event mechanics
Quick-time events feel inconsequential as players can retry immediately after failure. Adding more weight to these events would increase tension.
Improve character logic and behavior
Some characters exhibit illogical or unjustified behavior, which detracts from the narrative. More consistent and believable character actions are needed.
Polish animation quality
The animation quality appears dated and limited by budget constraints. Improving animations would enhance the visual experience.
Add more meaningful puzzles
The puzzles are simplistic and lack challenge. Introducing more engaging and meaningful puzzles would improve gameplay depth.
Expand story branching
The game’s linearity limits the impact of choices. Adding more branching paths would make decisions feel more consequential.
Optimize pacing in early game
The early game feels slow and less engaging. Improving pacing in the initial segments would better hook players.
Enhance replayability with varied outcomes
While choices are remembered, their impact on the story is limited. Adding more varied outcomes would increase replay value.
Improve character development consistency
Some characters, like Ben, are poorly developed and make unrealistic decisions. More consistent character development is needed.
Add more interactive gameplay elements
The game leans heavily on story, with limited interactivity. Adding more engaging gameplay elements would balance the experience.
Address DLC pacing issues
The DLC '400 Days' feels rushed and lacks depth. Improving pacing and character development in the DLC would enhance its value.
Improve visual fidelity
While the comic-style graphics are unique, they could benefit from modern enhancements to improve visual appeal.
Add more impactful moral dilemmas
The moral choices are compelling but could be more nuanced. Introducing more complex dilemmas would deepen the narrative.
Expand on side characters
Side characters like Ben and Lily feel underdeveloped. Expanding their roles and motivations would enrich the story.
Add more environmental interactivity
The game’s environments are static. Adding more interactive elements would make exploration more engaging.
Improve dialogue timing
Dialogue choices sometimes feel rushed. Allowing more time for decisions would improve player immersion.
Enhance emotional impact of endings
While the endings are emotional, they could be more varied and impactful. Expanding on different endings would leave a lasting impression.

The Walking Dead: Season One by Telltale Games is a masterpiece in storytelling that stands out as one of the best narrative-driven games. You play as Lee Everett, a man with a troubled past, who unexpectedly becomes the protector of a young girl named Clementine. The bond between Lee and Clementine is beautifully developed, making each decision feel weighty and personal. The game captures the brutal reality of a world overtaken by zombies, where tough moral choices shape the story in significant ways. The choices and consequences system is outstanding – it makes you question what’s right and wrong, and each decision has emotional weight that stays with you, especially as it impacts the characters around you. The story is intense and emotional, and it manages to balance hope, fear, and loss in a way few games achieve. Although the gameplay is mostly point-and-click with some quick-time events, the real focus is on the characters and story. The graphics have a comic-book art style, paying homage to the original source material, and the soundtrack intensifies every key moment. If you enjoy powerful storytelling and making meaningful choices, The Walking Dead: Season One is a must-play. It’s not just a game; it’s an emotional journey that will leave you thinking long after the credits roll. Rating: 10/10

Negative

I thought it was amazing for its price. But then I realized that it's just a story where the player has almost no influence on anything. I thought it was a fun story, but there are aspects of the game where you go around in circles and do boring activities such as: (a) look for the key (b) choose who to give food to and similar. Depending on our choices something changes. What changes? Well, the options are basically as follows: (a) You changed who dies (b) You changed who likes you. If all my options are wrong (because im basically pointing fingers at which character i want to kill, or which character i want to have personal beef with me). I feel like a perpetual loser, and the plot is too slow to be an enjoyable story. In this respect, it is very reminiscent of the Walking Dead series. An unnecessarily prolonged boring storyline that I couldn't even handle for 10 hours.

  • Sentiments

    • I thought the game was amazing for its price, which made it seem like a good value initially.
    • I realized that the game lacks player influence, which made it feel less engaging and interactive.
    • I found the story to be fun, but the gameplay included repetitive and boring activities like looking for keys or choosing who to give food to.
    • I felt that the choices in the game only led to minor changes, such as deciding who dies or who likes you, which felt unsatisfying.
    • I felt like a perpetual loser because all the options seemed wrong, as they involved pointing fingers at characters to kill or create personal conflicts.
    • I found the plot to be too slow, which made the story less enjoyable and hard to stay engaged with.
    • I compared the game to the Walking Dead series, describing it as having an unnecessarily prolonged and boring storyline.
    • I couldn't handle playing the game for more than 10 hours due to its slow and unengaging nature.

Negative

It's a telltale game, amazing story, written well and all the rest. But it's still a telltale game. It lacks action, and this game is based only on dialogue choices and decision making. What it lacks in player action it makes up for on story. Felt like a very passive gameplay. Probably many people out there will appreciate this kind of game, but it wasn't that good for me. I felt like I watched a series of cutscenes where sometimes I had to interact, rather than playing a game.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the story to be amazing and well-written, which is a strong positive aspect of the game.
    • I appreciate that the game is a Telltale game, which typically focuses on narrative and decision-making.
    • I felt the game lacked action, which made the gameplay feel less engaging for me.
    • I noticed the game is heavily based on dialogue choices and decision-making, which may not appeal to everyone.
    • I felt the game compensated for its lack of player action with a strong and compelling story.
    • I experienced the gameplay as very passive, which made it feel less interactive and more like watching cutscenes.
    • I believe many people might appreciate this kind of game, even though it wasn't enjoyable for me personally.
    • I felt like I was watching a series of cutscenes with occasional interactions, rather than actively playing a game.

Negative

I really didn't want to give this game a negative review, it has 99% positive review and story is good, too. After all, I am a Telltale fan, I love their games, their "The Wolf Among Us" is just one of the greatest games of all time and I always recommend it whenever someone asks for recommendations. But, but not this game, currently I am watching TWD (in the end of S2), and I am in the right mood to play this game, but this just didn't click with me. First of all, it is not as advanced and interactive as TWAU, I understand this is an old game, but again, it is a Telltale game, however there is almost zero interaction and consequences in this game. You save someone, that person dies anyway, you let someone die, they survive. Everytime something trivial happens, you are forced to take someone's side, and you know what? Nothing matters in the end, because the game is predetermined. This wasn't a thing in TWAU, yes, there were some parts of the game that can 't be affected, that is realistic, because life is also like that, you can't change anything, but you can change something which is not possible in this game. So sorry, Telltale, not this time.

  • Sentiments

    • I really didn't want to give this game a negative review because it has 99% positive reviews and the story is good.
    • I am a Telltale fan and love their games, especially 'The Wolf Among Us,' which I consider one of the greatest games of all time.
    • I am in the right mood to play this game, but it just didn't click with me.
    • The game is not as advanced and interactive as 'The Wolf Among Us,' which is disappointing.
    • There is almost zero interaction and consequences in this game, which makes it feel less engaging.
    • Your choices don't matter because the game is predetermined, which is frustrating.
    • In 'The Wolf Among Us,' you could change some things, which made it feel more realistic and engaging.
    • In this game, saving someone or letting them die doesn't affect the outcome, which feels pointless.
    • You are constantly forced to take sides on trivial matters, but it doesn't impact the story.
    • Overall, I am disappointed with this game and cannot recommend it despite being a Telltale fan.

Negative

This game is a buggy fucking mess, The save system is broke, models don't load all the time, choices you make don't matter because sometimes the game straight up doesn't register the choices you make. Can't save Carley, Doug's fatass spawns in during episode 2. I saved Carley numerous times, Dougs fucking dumbass comes regardless. Broken mess, Don't buy this version.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel extremely frustrated with the game because it is described as a buggy mess, which significantly impacts the overall experience.
    • I am disappointed with the broken save system, as it prevents me from properly saving my progress and enjoying the game.
    • I find it annoying that models don't load consistently, which breaks immersion and makes the game feel unpolished.
    • I am upset that the choices I make in the game sometimes don't register, making my decisions feel meaningless and reducing the game's replay value.
    • I feel frustrated that I cannot save Carley, despite my efforts, which makes the game feel unfair and poorly designed.
    • I am irritated that Doug's character spawns in during episode 2 regardless of my actions, which feels like a glitch and undermines the game's narrative.
    • I am dissatisfied with the game's overall state, as it feels broken and unplayable, leading me to advise others not to buy this version.

Negative

Good game unfortunately the game was not saving my progress even though it showed auto save icon. I would go back to the game expecting to continue from where I left off and had to restart from another previous part of the game. No manual saves, no skip cutscenes to try to catch up where I left off. I don’t recommend this game

  • Sentiments

    • I found the game to be good overall, which indicates a positive sentiment about its quality.
    • I experienced frustration because the game was not saving my progress, even though the auto-save icon appeared.
    • I felt disappointed when I had to restart from a previous part of the game instead of continuing from where I left off.
    • I was annoyed by the lack of manual save options, which made it difficult to manage my progress.
    • I found it inconvenient that there were no options to skip cutscenes, which made catching up to my previous progress tedious.
    • I do not recommend this game due to the issues I faced with saving progress and the lack of quality-of-life features.
