AI Review

Total War: MEDIEVAL II - Definitive Edition is a classic strategy game that immerses players in the turbulent medieval era, offering epic battles, empire management, and a sprawling campaign across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. With an AI Community Rating of 87.98%, this game is celebrated for its deep strategic gameplay, massive battles featuring up to 10,000 troops, and the inclusion of all DLCs like the Kingdoms expansion, which adds four new campaigns and over 80 hours of content. Fans praise its replayability, historical depth, and the thrill of commanding vast armies. However, some players note that the graphics feel outdated, and the camera controls can be clunky. Despite these flaws, the game remains a favorite for strategy enthusiasts, offering hundreds of hours of engaging gameplay. If you love grand strategy and don’t mind dated visuals, this is a must-play.

What the community wishes

Outdated graphics need improvement
The game's graphics are outdated, which detracts from the overall experience. A remaster or update to modern graphical standards would greatly enhance the game's appeal and immersion.
Camera controls are problematic
The camera controls are clunky and unintuitive, making it difficult to survey the battlefield or manage units effectively. Improved camera mechanics would significantly enhance gameplay.
AI needs smarter decision-making
The AI is often predictable and lacks strategic depth, making battles less challenging. Enhancing AI intelligence and adaptability would improve the overall strategic experience.
Pathfinding issues during battles
Units frequently struggle with pathfinding, leading to frustrating and unrealistic battle outcomes. Fixing pathfinding mechanics would make battles more fluid and enjoyable.
Diplomacy system feels unbalanced
The diplomacy system often feels unfair, with allies turning hostile for no reason and the Pope excommunicating players arbitrarily. A more balanced and logical diplomacy system is needed.
Mod support should be expanded
While mod support is strong, expanding official tools and resources for modders would further enhance the game's longevity and community-driven content.
Learning curve is too steep
New players may find the game difficult to learn due to its complexity. Improved tutorials and a more intuitive interface would make the game more accessible.
Battles can become repetitive
Over time, battles can feel repetitive due to limited unit variety and predictable AI. Introducing more unit diversity and dynamic battle scenarios would keep gameplay fresh.
Historical inaccuracies in campaigns
Some campaigns suffer from historical inaccuracies, which detract from the immersion. Ensuring historical authenticity in future updates or remasters would enhance the experience.
Cutscenes are outdated
The game's cutscenes are very dated and do not hold up well. Modernizing or replacing them would improve the overall presentation and storytelling.
Economy system lacks depth
The economic system is simplistic compared to newer strategy games. Adding more depth and complexity to the economy would make resource management more engaging.
Unit responsiveness needs improvement
Units often feel unresponsive during battles, leading to frustrating delays in executing commands. Improving unit responsiveness would make battles more dynamic and enjoyable.
Limited faction diversity
The game could benefit from more diverse factions with unique mechanics and units. Expanding faction diversity would add replayability and strategic depth.
Grind can feel excessive
The grind for resources and units can feel excessive at times. Balancing the grind to make progression smoother would improve the overall pacing.
Lack of modern quality-of-life features
The game lacks modern quality-of-life features such as auto-resolve improvements and better UI/UX. Adding these features would make the game more user-friendly.
Multiplayer options are limited
The multiplayer experience is limited compared to newer titles. Expanding multiplayer options and features would attract a broader audience.
Historical events need more depth
Historical events in the game feel shallow and lack impact. Adding more depth and interactivity to historical events would enhance immersion and storytelling.
Unit collision mechanics need refinement
Unit collision mechanics can feel clunky and unrealistic. Refining these mechanics would make battles more realistic and satisfying.
Campaign length can be overwhelming
The length of campaigns can feel overwhelming, especially for new players. Offering shorter, more focused campaigns would make the game more accessible.
Remaster or sequel highly requested
Many players are requesting a remaster or sequel to modernize the game while retaining its core mechanics. Addressing this demand would satisfy the community and attract new players.

Be me, England Problem: I have no money :( Solution: Invade and occupy everyone around me to get more taxes :) Problem: The pope is angry I keep killing my fellow catholics PROBLEMS: Excommunication, inquisitors, unhappy population everywhere :( Solution: Make a few priests. Send a stream of assassins to Rome. Keep killing the pope every year (as fast as they get reelected) until they run out of cardinals and my priests become the new cardinals. Make myself pope, fill out the vatican with more of my priests. Everyone is happy again :)

On my old PC with a non-Steam version, I extended the campaign to the year 2542, artificially expanding other countries into empires with massive armies. I’d then engage in wars with them purely for fun, and secure peace with a single diplomatic click, paying out enormous sums of money. That’s how much I love this game.

I played and completely conquered the entire world as Briton, Byzantine, Poland, Spain, Holy Roman Empire, Milan, and Moors, entire world before end game year I rebought on steam and I have more than 1k hours on steam, this is my most played game of all time, including World of Warcraft, by far this is the best game ever and the mods have made it even better. I played Third Age as it was being developed, Divide and Conquer, AGO, Game of Thrones, the mods never end. Negative

I wish I could recommend this game but the way the camera controls is atrocious. This is the only game I have ever played where I am just completely turned off by the way it handles with the camera sliding down like it's on a quarter pipe skate ramp when you zoom in to look at your units. to you not being able to angle the camera to look directly down or up to survey the map. If you can get past that then go for it, I cannot. That's the only area where I will say newer Total wars have genuinely improved. TWW's camera throughout all 3 games is way better.

  • Sentiments

    • I wish I could recommend this game, but the camera controls are so bad that I cannot.
    • The camera sliding down like it's on a quarter pipe skate ramp when zooming in to look at units is extremely frustrating.
    • I am completely turned off by the way the camera handles in this game.
    • The inability to angle the camera directly down or up to survey the map is a significant drawback.
    • If you can get past the camera issues, the game might be worth playing, but I cannot overlook them.
    • Newer Total War games have genuinely improved in terms of camera controls compared to this one.
    • The camera in Total War: Warhammer (TWW) across all three games is way better than in this game.

Negative

  • Sentiments

    • I feel frustrated and impatient, demanding that the developers remaster the game already, as I believe they are motivated by financial gain.
    • I express a strong negative sentiment towards Jonathan Mckinley, despite acknowledging him as a hero, which feels contradictory and sarcastic.
    • I call for a boycott of the company CA, expressing deep dissatisfaction and anger towards their practices or products.

EB 2 hands down best historical mod. STEAM SUCKS DON'T BUY IT FROM THE STEAM STORE THO If you decide to buy it, don't buy from the Steam store............... Steams woke, don't support the WOKE VIRUS thanks.........

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that EB 2 is the best historical mod available, and it stands out as a top choice for fans of historical mods.
    • I strongly dislike Steam and advise against purchasing the game from the Steam store due to my negative feelings towards the platform.
    • I believe that Steam is 'woke' and express a strong opposition to supporting what I refer to as the 'WOKE VIRUS.'

Negative

The controls are strange and the soldiers pathfinding is as if stevie wonder is leading them into battle has some enjoyable moments like making peasant armies fight each other sometimes the units can feel very slow even when they run, when i think of a tactic i cant really pull it off because the soldiers want to go for a sunday stroll instead of taking place in a new position

  • Sentiments

    • I find the controls to be strange and unintuitive, which makes the gameplay experience frustrating.
    • The soldiers' pathfinding is extremely poor, as if they are being led by someone who cannot see, which is very frustrating.
    • There are some enjoyable moments, such as making peasant armies fight each other, which adds a fun element to the game.
    • The units often feel very slow, even when they are running, which makes the gameplay feel sluggish and unresponsive.
    • When I think of a tactic, I often cannot execute it because the soldiers move too slowly, as if they are taking a leisurely stroll instead of responding quickly.

Negative

Still awsome after all years, and it works fine on Win11 but once again peapole ale swayed by some german anti roman monk propaganda. Not only Romans are called "Byzantinees" I need to modify files to play Romans...this will not stand.

  • Sentiments

    • I am annoyed that Romans are referred to as 'Byzantines' in the game, which feels historically inaccurate and disrespectful.
    • I feel the game is still awesome even after all these years, which shows a strong positive sentiment towards its enduring quality.
    • I appreciate that the game works fine on Windows 11, indicating satisfaction with its compatibility on modern systems.
    • I am frustrated by what I perceive as German anti-Roman monk propaganda influencing the game's portrayal of Romans, which feels unfair and biased.
    • I am dissatisfied that I need to modify game files to play as Romans, which feels like an unnecessary inconvenience.
    • I strongly believe that the current portrayal of Romans in the game is unacceptable and should be changed.
