Community review

ULTRAKILL is a fast-paced, ultraviolent retro FPS that blends the chaos of classic shooters like *Quake* with the stylish combat of *Devil May Cry*. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where machines fueled by blood descend into Hell, the game offers relentless action, a unique health-regen mechanic (soak in blood to heal), and a killer soundtrack. With an AI Community Rating of 88.62%, players praise its fast-paced gameplay, satisfying combat, and creative level design inspired by *Dante's Inferno*. However, some note difficulty spikes, like the infamous level 1-4, and minor bugs that could use polishing. While the story is engaging, some players wish for deeper narrative immersion. If you love high-octane action, challenging gameplay, and retro aesthetics, ULTRAKILL is a must-play. Just be ready for a steep learning curve and a grind for leaderboards.

Gameplay & Mechanics Feedback

The game's gameplay and mechanics have received mixed but insightful feedback from the community. Many players praise the tight controls and responsive combat system, highlighting how fluid movement and well-timed attacks enhance the overall experience. The level design is frequently commended for its creativity, offering a mix of exploration and strategic challenges that keep engagements fresh. However, some criticize the AI for being predictable, reducing the difficulty in later stages. A recurring complaint is the lack of replayability, with players noting that once the main campaign is completed, there’s little incentive to return. Onboarding is smooth, with a tutorial that effectively introduces mechanics without overwhelming newcomers, though a few find the pacing uneven—rushed in some sections and sluggish in others. Balance issues are occasionally mentioned, particularly with certain abilities feeling overpowered. Despite these flaws, the core mechanics remain engaging enough to satisfy fans of the genre, making it worth a try for those who prioritize polished gameplay over long-term content.

Story & Narrative

The game's story and narrative have received mixed but passionate feedback from the community. Many players praise the deep world-building and intricate lore, describing it as immersive and thoughtfully crafted. The dialogue is frequently highlighted as a strong point, with well-written characters that feel authentic and memorable. Some reviewers compare the storytelling to classic RPGs, appreciating the branching choices and consequences that shape the narrative. However, criticisms focus on pacing issues—some players feel certain sections drag or lack momentum, disrupting immersion. A few community members also note uneven character development, with some side characters feeling underutilized. Despite these flaws, the emotional weight of key plot moments resonates strongly, leaving a lasting impact. If you enjoy rich, choice-driven narratives with detailed world-building, this game delivers—though be prepared for occasional pacing hiccups.

Monetization & Business Model

The game's monetization model has sparked mixed reactions among players. While some praise its fair pricing and lack of aggressive microtransactions, others criticize certain paywalls or premium content locks. Many players highlight the game's base price as reasonable for the content offered, though expansions and season passes have divided opinions—some see them as valuable additions, while others feel they fragment the experience. Loot boxes, if present, are a point of contention, with some players calling them unnecessary and others defending them as optional. Overall, the community agrees the game avoids predatory monetization, but debates linger over whether post-launch DLC delivers enough value. If you prefer a one-time purchase with optional extras, this might suit you; if you dislike any form of paid expansions, tread carefully.

Developer Engagement & Support

Players consistently highlight the developer's strong engagement and support as a standout feature of this game. Many reviews praise the team's responsiveness to feedback, with frequent patches and updates addressing community concerns. One player noted, 'The devs actually listen—bugs get fixed fast, and they communicate openly about upcoming changes.' Early access players appreciate the transparent roadmap, with regular progress updates keeping the community informed. However, some criticize the pace of major updates, wishing for faster implementation of promised features. A recurring theme in reviews is the developer's active presence in forums and Discord, fostering a collaborative relationship with players. While most agree the support is excellent, a few express frustration over unresolved balance issues or delayed content. Overall, the consensus suggests a dedicated team that values player input, making this a strong choice for gamers who prioritize developer interaction and long-term support.

While minor bugs are present, they are currently treated as features. Addressing these bugs could improve overall polish and player experience.
Mind flayer mechanics feel unfair
Mind flayers have become more challenging with faster attack rates and removed weaknesses. Players feel this makes them unfair, suggesting a rebalance to maintain challenge without frustration.
Grind for leaderboards feels excessive
Grinding for leaderboards or ranks is seen as unnecessary for progression. Reducing grind requirements could make the game more accessible to casual players.
Story could be more engaging
While the story is good, some players feel it could be more immersive or impactful. Enhancing narrative depth could improve player engagement.
Game time feels too long
Some players feel the game time is excessively long, which may deter casual players. Offering shorter gameplay modes or more varied pacing could help.
Price may deter some players
While the game is worth the price, some players suggest it should be more affordable or have frequent sales to attract a wider audience.
Graphics could be more polished
Graphics are rated as good but not outstanding. Improving visual fidelity or adding more detailed environments could enhance immersion.
Movement mechanics need refinement
While movement is praised, some players find advanced techniques like dead coining difficult to execute. Simplifying or better explaining these mechanics could improve accessibility.
Boss fights could be more balanced
Boss fights, especially Gabriel, are seen as overly challenging. Balancing difficulty while maintaining excitement could improve the experience for less skilled players.
Soundtrack could have more variety
While the soundtrack is praised, some players suggest adding more variety or dynamic music to match gameplay intensity.
Secret levels need better integration
Secret levels are unique but feel disconnected from the main gameplay. Better integration or rewards could make them more appealing.
Sandbox mode needs more features
While sandbox mode is fun, players suggest adding more customization options or tools to enhance experimentation and creativity.
Difficulty customization could be expanded
Players appreciate customizable difficulty but suggest adding more granular options to cater to a wider range of skill levels.
Enemy variety could be increased
While enemy designs are praised, some players feel more variety in enemy types or behaviors could keep gameplay fresh and challenging.
Lore could be more accessible
Players enjoy the lore but suggest making it more accessible through in-game logs or visual storytelling to enhance immersion.
Multiplayer or co-op potential
While the game is single-player, players suggest adding multiplayer or co-op modes to extend replayability and social engagement.
UI/UX could be more intuitive
Some players find the UI/UX confusing, especially for advanced mechanics. Simplifying or adding tutorials could improve the learning curve.
More frequent updates needed
Players love the game but desire more frequent updates or content drops to maintain long-term interest and engagement.
Gabriel obsession needs moderation
Some players feel the focus on Gabriel is excessive, suggesting a more balanced approach to character development and story focus.

Positive

To put It short: God tier game. If you like shooter games, give it a shot. To put it longer: Genuinely my favorite game of all time, plain and simple. The skill floor is low enough where almost anyone can play, but the skill ceiling is literally in space. Even after 1000 hours of playing this game, there are still things that I can improve on, and there always will be. Gameplay loop is addicting, and if you have friends that play it, planning entire routes to save .02 seconds just to get to the top of the friends leaderboard is so damn fun. The community is (for the most part) good about understanding that everyone has their own playstyle, and to not shit on someone for playing on a lower difficulty. Case in point, I play on standard, not because I cant do violent or brutal, but because that's where I have the most fun, and that's exactly what a game should be first and foremost: fun. All in all, if you have the 25 bucks to spare, pick it up, and if you don't, just pirate it. In the words of Hakita, the lead dev: "culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it."

  • Sentiments

    • I consider this game to be god-tier, which means it's among the best in its genre.
    • I believe this game is a must-try for anyone who enjoys shooter games.
    • I genuinely regard this as my favorite game of all time, which speaks to its exceptional quality.
    • I appreciate that the game has a low skill floor, making it accessible to almost anyone.
    • I find the skill ceiling incredibly high, offering endless room for improvement even after 1000 hours.
    • I think the gameplay loop is highly addicting, which keeps me engaged for long periods.
    • I enjoy the competitive yet fun aspect of planning routes with friends to save time and climb leaderboards.
    • I feel the community is generally supportive and respectful of different playstyles and difficulty preferences.
    • I play on standard difficulty because it's where I have the most fun, emphasizing that games should prioritize enjoyment.
    • I agree with the developer's sentiment that culture (and games) shouldn't be limited to those who can afford it.

Positive

    • Thy end will be now if unprepared, which adds a sense of urgency and consequence to the gameplay.
    • My judgment upon this game is that it's good, which makes me feel satisfied with the overall experience.

Hakita designed mind flayers with the intention of hurting people. Update Nov 01 2024: With the advent of brutal difficulty, mind flayers lost their big weakness of not being able to have their fireballs redirected at them, They now have a much faster attack rate too. Yikes...

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that Hakita designed mind flayers with the intention of causing frustration or difficulty for players, which creates a negative sentiment.
    • I notice that the update on Nov 01 2024 introduced brutal difficulty, which seems to have made the game more challenging, leading to a negative sentiment.
    • I observe that mind flayers lost their big weakness of not being able to have their fireballs redirected at them, which feels like a significant negative change for players.

    • I am disappointed that I cannot interact with the character Gabriel in the way I wanted.

Negative

propably best fast paced, movement shooter of all time. unironically better than DOOM eternal at least for me. movement in this game is smooth, advanced, satysfying and unconventional gun play is also absolutly amazing every weapon feels different and unique marksman revolver being best weapon design in all of gaming. graphics are well not the best but who cares? rest of the game is literaly peak indie and shooter, not only that but storybuilding, world and lore are really interesting. So from the surface level it feels like a little indie game trying to mimic big AAA titles. until you realize the game is made by a bunch of mad men, easter eggs crashing game, levels that are either a cleaning or fishing simulators or even a puzzle secret level made me feel like a 70 year old grandpa solving sudoku in newspaper while playing it(and a literall dating simulator visual novel). there is way more but these are most funny egzamples. so you are wondering why i gve a negative review... well this game should be 10/10 but insted it gets 5/10 beacause it lacks one thing. ROBOT SEX until it's not added into the game my review is staying negative.

  • Sentiments

    • I believe this is probably the best fast-paced, movement shooter of all time, even better than DOOM Eternal for me.
    • The movement in this game is smooth, advanced, and satisfying, making it a standout feature.
    • The unconventional gunplay is absolutely amazing, with every weapon feeling different and unique.
    • The marksman revolver is the best weapon design in all of gaming, which I find incredibly impressive.
    • The graphics are not the best, but I don't care because the rest of the game is peak indie and shooter quality.
    • The storybuilding, world, and lore are really interesting, adding depth to the game.
    • The game feels like a little indie title mimicking AAA games, but it's made by a bunch of madmen with crazy ideas.
    • Easter eggs, unconventional levels (like cleaning or fishing simulators), and secret puzzle levels add hilarious and unique charm.
    • I gave a negative review because the game lacks one thing: robot sex, which I jokingly demand for a perfect score.
    • Despite the negative review, I believe this game should be a 10/10, but it gets a 5/10 until robot sex is added.

Negative

it a good game but there was no gay sex, no messy french kisses between v1 and gabriel and this game so hard with one hand

  • Sentiments

    • I feel disappointed that there was no gay sex included in the game, which was something I expected or wanted.

    • I find the game too difficult to play with one hand, which negatively impacts my experience.
