Wallpaper Engine is a unique and versatile tool that transforms your desktop into a dynamic canvas of live wallpapers. With an impressive AI Community Rating of 91.13%, this casual indie game allows you to animate your desktop with 3D and 2D animations, videos, websites, and even interactive applications. Whether you're customizing wallpapers with your favorite colors or creating your own designs using the built-in editor, Wallpaper Engine offers endless possibilities. The Steam Workshop hosts over a million free wallpapers, with new uploads daily, ensuring you’ll always find something fresh. Plus, the free Android companion app lets you take your favorite wallpapers on the go. While praised for its creativity and ease of use, some users report performance issues, such as high GPU usage and occasional crashes, particularly on lower-end systems. Despite these drawbacks, Wallpaper Engine remains a must-have for gamers and creatives looking to personalize their digital space.

What the community wishes

High GPU usage causes performance issues
Some users report GPU usage spiking to 90%, causing lag, crashes, and slow performance, especially when running certain games like Unity-based titles or Path of Exile. This issue persists across multiple systems and needs optimization.
Family sharing disabled, causing frustration
Users are upset that family sharing has been disabled, preventing them from using Wallpaper Engine on secondary PCs. This decision is seen as greedy and has led to negative feedback.
Monitor compatibility issues after updates
Some users experience monitor signal loss when Wallpaper Engine starts, particularly with ASUS TUF monitors. This issue arises after updates and persists despite driver updates and troubleshooting.
Mature content filtering needs improvement
The inclusion of mature (18+) wallpapers is criticized as unnecessary and unpleasant. While there is an option to filter them out, users suggest better moderation or clearer filtering options.
Crashes on startup occasionally
Some users report occasional crashes during startup, requiring them to reopen the application. This issue disrupts the user experience and needs addressing.
Manual wallpaper management is cumbersome
Users find it frustrating that wallpapers from one PC are automatically downloaded on another, requiring manual removal. A more intuitive syncing or management system is needed.
Achievements and trading cards unnecessary
Users find achievements and trading cards for a wallpaper app pointless and distracting. They suggest removing or making them optional.
Workshop content quality varies widely
While there is a wide variety of wallpapers, users note that finding high-quality content requires extensive filtering and sifting through low-quality or irrelevant options.
Lack of advanced customization options
Some users feel the app is limited to visual aesthetics and lacks deeper functionality or advanced customization options for power users.
Audio-responsive wallpapers need better optimization
While audio-responsive wallpapers are praised, users report performance issues and suggest better optimization for smoother functionality.
Inconsistent performance across monitors
Users report inconsistent performance when using multiple monitors, with some monitors failing to display wallpapers correctly or cutting signals.
Workshop content moderation is lacking
Users suggest better moderation of Workshop content to reduce low-quality or irrelevant wallpapers and improve the overall browsing experience.
No clear solution for signal loss
Users experience signal loss on specific monitors when Wallpaper Engine starts, and no clear solution is provided despite troubleshooting efforts.
Limited functionality for non-gaming users
Users who are not into heavy customization feel the app offers limited value, suggesting more features for casual or non-gaming users.
Lack of clear documentation for issues
Users report a lack of clear documentation or support for troubleshooting issues like monitor signal loss, leading to frustration.
Workshop search filters need improvement
Users find the Workshop search filters insufficient for narrowing down high-quality wallpapers, suggesting more refined filtering options.
Performance issues on lower-end systems
While the app is generally lightweight, some wallpapers can be taxing on lower-end systems, requiring better optimization for broader compatibility.
Lack of cross-platform syncing options
Users want better syncing options between devices to avoid manual management of wallpapers across multiple PCs.
Inconsistent behavior after updates
Users report inconsistent behavior, such as monitor signal loss, after updates, suggesting better testing and stability improvements.
More intuitive user interface needed
Some users find the interface less intuitive, especially for advanced features, and suggest a more user-friendly design.

Positive

I've been using Wallpaper Engine for YEARS across multiple PC builds and wholeheartedly believe this is one of the best PC personalization/customization programs out there, regardless of if you're into gaming. You don't need me to tell you that animated wallpapers are fire, but animated wallpapers are fire. There are literally endless live wallpaper options in the style of just about any form of media you are interested in, leading to the ultimate desktop experience. While there may be some wallpapers that are mildly taxing on lower end rigs, in general just about anyone can run this and find a wallpaper that resonates with them. In addition, Wallpaper Engine pauses itself when you're not on your desktop, which helps prevent it from being needlessly intensive on your hardware. Obviously very few people stare blankly at their desktop for extended periods of time, but for those moments in-between applications or if you're someone with multiple monitors, then this is absolutely a MUST-HAVE, especially for $4!

Positive

Does what it says on the package. For $4 it's a great deal. There is a lot more to it than just managing your desktop or mobile device wallpapers, but I have not gotten into any of that so far. Without diving into that aspect of it, there's not much more to say. However... why the hell does this have Steam Achievements? Achievements for favoriting wallpapers, etc. And Trading Cards, seriously? Regardless, however pointless achievements and cards are for an app like this, it's well worth the money and minimal amount of setup time to get it working and find some wallpapers that fit your aesthetic.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the product to be a great deal for its price of $4, offering good value for the money.
    • I appreciate that the app does more than just manage wallpapers, though I haven't explored those features yet.
    • I feel that the inclusion of Steam Achievements and Trading Cards is unnecessary and somewhat pointless for an app like this.
    • I think the app is well worth the money and requires minimal setup time to get started.
    • I enjoy the ability to find wallpapers that fit my aesthetic preferences easily.
    • I find the concept of achievements for favoriting wallpapers to be odd and out of place.
    • I believe the app delivers on its promise and does what it claims to do effectively.
    • I haven't yet explored the additional features beyond wallpaper management, so I can't comment on them.
    • I find the minimal setup time to be a positive aspect, making the app easy to use quickly.
    • I think the inclusion of Trading Cards is unnecessary and doesn't add value to the app.

Negative

I only really got wallpaper engine in order to have a different wallpaper on my 2nd monitor, due to the lack of windows support put into multi-monitor setups with different screen sizes and shapes. Turns out, WPE will just randomly crash my system, BSOD style. If it works for you, fantasic! If it doesn't, that's a shame. It didn't particularly impact my PCs performance in other ways, but the random crashes are just a dealbreaker for me. TLDR: was great, until it wasn't. Crashes randomly.

  • Sentiments

    • I initially got Wallpaper Engine to have different wallpapers on my second monitor due to Windows' lack of support for multi-monitor setups with different screen sizes and shapes.
    • Wallpaper Engine randomly crashes my system, causing a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), which is extremely frustrating.
    • If Wallpaper Engine works for you, it's fantastic, but if it doesn't, it's a shame.
    • The random crashes are a dealbreaker for me, even though it didn't impact my PC's performance in other ways.
    • Overall, Wallpaper Engine was great until it started crashing randomly, which ruined the experience.

Negative

Apparently isn't compatible with one of my monitors DESPITE having worked flawlessly for the last while. I recently bought an asus tuf gaming monitor to pair with my lg ultragear and set the asus as the primary monitor. For the last 2 or so weeks, I've had both monitors active while playing a wallpaper on each one, working without issue whatsoever until today. I shut my computer off, then turned it on 2 mins later after realizing i needed to grab a link. Afterwards, my asus monitor would turn on normally, but as soon as the app started up and began running a wallpaper, the signal was immediately cut on my asus, wherein it then turned off automatically due to receiving no signal, but not the lg monitor. Before I get told the same bull-shit instructions about "update or fresh install graphics drivers" I already did that and then some. Checked my cables, checked my monitors, checked my drivers, checked my damn socks, checked everything humanly possibly. I swapped my lg to my primary monitor and it seems to display wallpapers fine with no issue whatsoever while my asus monitor remains on and active. However, when i apply a wallpaper on the asus though, it immediately cuts the signal and shuts off until i remove the wallpaper and manually turn on the monitor again. Aside from the fact that my lg is using an hdmi and my asus a dpi cable, I literally have no other idea what the issue could be aside it from being the fault of WallPaper engine itself.

  • Sentiments

    • I am frustrated because my Asus monitor, which worked flawlessly for weeks, suddenly stopped displaying wallpapers from WallPaper Engine, cutting the signal and turning off automatically.
    • I am annoyed that despite checking everything—cables, monitors, drivers, and even my socks—I cannot find a solution to the issue with my Asus monitor.
    • I am relieved that my LG monitor continues to work perfectly as the primary display, showing wallpapers without any issues.
    • I am confused and unsure about the cause of the problem, as the only difference between the monitors is the type of cable used (HDMI for LG and DPI for Asus).
    • I am disappointed that updating and reinstalling graphics drivers did not resolve the issue, despite following common troubleshooting steps.
    • I am suspicious that the issue might be caused by WallPaper Engine itself, as the problem only occurs when applying a wallpaper to the Asus monitor.
    • I am frustrated that the Asus monitor turns off automatically when a wallpaper is applied, requiring me to manually turn it back on after removing the wallpaper.
    • I am satisfied that my LG monitor remains functional and reliable, even when the Asus monitor fails to work properly.
    • I am concerned that the issue might persist and affect my overall experience with using dual monitors for gaming and other activities.
    • I am determined to find a solution to the problem, as I have already exhausted all possible troubleshooting steps I could think of.

Negative

Recently got a new laptop, decided to download this app so I could download a wallpaper or two that I had saved on my custom built pc at home. Hell no. Every single one on the other computer is being downloaded on my computer and I either need to manually uninstall every single one or run out of space on my new laptop cause you guys can't figure it out. Not worth it.

  • Sentiments

    • I am frustrated because the app automatically downloaded all my saved wallpapers from my other computer without my consent, causing inconvenience.
    • I am annoyed that I have to manually uninstall each wallpaper to free up space on my new laptop.
    • I am disappointed with the app's inability to handle the download process properly, leading to unnecessary clutter.
    • I feel that the app is not worth using due to its poor functionality and lack of user control.
    • I am concerned about running out of storage space on my new laptop because of the app's behavior.

This game is for you if you want: - To be flashed - To see the collective artwork of every horny bastard on the internet This game is not for you if you want: - Linux support (this is a must for all gigachads) - Wallpapers that aren't AI or Anime (there's some good ones but its like finding a needle in a haystack)

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that this game is visually stunning and designed to captivate players with its flashy and attention-grabbing elements.
    • I appreciate the game's artwork, which seems to be a collective effort inspired by a wide range of creative and bold internet artists.
    • I am disappointed that the game lacks Linux support, which is a significant drawback for users who prefer or require this platform.
    • I find the wallpapers in the game to be predominantly AI-generated or Anime-themed, which might not appeal to everyone.
    • I think the game's wallpapers are hard to find if you're looking for something outside the AI or Anime genres, making it a frustrating experience.
    • I believe the game caters to a specific audience that enjoys bold and unconventional art styles, which might not be for everyone.

Negative

the developers for this app are greedy and have disabled family sharing for wallpaper enginge. my other pc has not had any updates to wallpaper engine since they disabled the license for family sharing steam accounts. i can not use wallpaper engine on my second pc any more because my second pc is a child account and this is my main account family sharing. it use to work great but they got greedy and i can do the same thing they did to make the app and give you it all for free. I think that someone like me needs to just simply make this app free for all users as a big finger up to these developers greed. im not paying you again for my second pc to use family sharing. ill spend the time taking all your hard work and giving it away for FREE tho. you have made me that mad about this with your greed. i hope that your family meets the devil.

  • Sentiments

    • I feel that the developers are greedy for disabling family sharing for Wallpaper Engine, which has negatively impacted my ability to use the app on my second PC.
    • I am frustrated that my second PC, which is a child account, can no longer receive updates or use Wallpaper Engine due to the disabled family sharing feature.
    • I used to enjoy the app when it worked well, but now I feel betrayed by the developers' decision to disable family sharing.
    • I am so angry that I am considering creating a free alternative to Wallpaper Engine to spite the developers for their greed.
    • I refuse to pay again for a second license just to use Wallpaper Engine on my second PC, as I believe this is unfair.
    • I am so upset that I am willing to spend time replicating the app and giving it away for free as a way to retaliate against the developers.
    • I feel that the developers' greed has pushed me to the point of wanting to undermine their work by making a free version available to everyone.
    • I am so angry that I wish harm upon the developers' family, which shows the depth of my frustration and resentment.
    • I believe that the developers' decision to disable family sharing is a clear example of greed, and it has ruined my experience with the app.
    • I feel that the developers' actions have made me so mad that I am willing to take extreme measures to retaliate against them.
