What the community wishes

Increase game length
The game is stunning but feels too short. Players wish for more content to explore, as the narrative, scenery, music, and voice acting are all highly praised.
Add FOV and motion blur options
The small FOV and unchangeable motion blur cause motion sickness for some players. Adding options to adjust these settings would improve accessibility and comfort.
Expand story depth
While the story is engaging, some players feel it could be deeper or provide more answers. Expanding on the mysteries and indirect storytelling elements would enhance the experience.
Improve scene immersion
Minor inconsistencies, like maggots in a bowl in an abandoned house, break immersion. Attention to detail in environmental storytelling would strengthen the game's believability.
Add more player interaction
The game is linear with limited interaction. Adding more interactive elements, especially in the present-day sections, would make the experience more engaging.
Include trigger warnings
The game deals with heavy themes like family tragedies. Adding trigger warnings would help players prepare for emotionally intense content.
Enhance replayability
While the game is impactful, it lacks replay value. Adding branching paths or hidden secrets could encourage multiple playthroughs.
Address pacing issues
The first half of the game feels slower compared to the second half. Improving pacing in the early sections would maintain player engagement throughout.
Add more gameplay variety
The game relies heavily on storytelling with minimal gameplay. Incorporating more varied mechanics or mini-games would balance the experience.
Clarify story holes
Some players find plot holes frustrating. Addressing these inconsistencies would improve narrative cohesion and player satisfaction.
Expand on character backstories
The characters are intriguing but could benefit from deeper exploration. Adding more backstory or context would enrich the emotional connection.
Add more environmental details
The house is a key element but could feel more alive. Adding more interactive objects or hidden details would enhance exploration.
Include a difficulty slider
The game is very easy, with minimal challenge. Adding a difficulty slider or optional challenges would cater to a wider audience.
Expand on the ending
The ending feels abrupt and lacks closure. Providing more resolution or hints at answers would leave players more satisfied.
Add more emotional variety
The game is consistently sad, which may not appeal to all players. Introducing moments of levity or hope would create a more balanced emotional journey.
Include more family stories
The Finch family stories are compelling but limited. Adding more family members or extended narratives would deepen the lore.
Improve camera control
The game frequently takes control of the camera, which can be disorienting. Allowing more player control over the camera would improve the experience.
Add more visual variety
While the visuals are stunning, some players desire more diversity in environments. Expanding the visual themes would keep the experience fresh.
Include more gameplay challenges
The game is beginner-friendly but lacks challenge. Adding optional puzzles or timed events would appeal to players seeking more engagement.
Expand on the Finch house
The Finch house is a central element but feels underutilized. Adding more explorable areas or hidden rooms would enhance the sense of discovery.

I don't think a game has ever made me cry before I'm certain a game has never made me cry so hard I had to stop playing before Knock off around 15 minutes of playtime from how much I've played because that's when I started crying while the game was left open I don't think this will hit as hard with other people as it did with me but it will still hit you Man it just, felt like I was watching someone who'd put my life into a video game This review isn't up to the standards I'd usually hold myself up to so sorry about that but it would feel so wrong of me to not leave a positive review immediately I'll bring myself eventually to finish it and I'm sure this review will not have changed to a negative one but I just can't touch it right now, it's too good for me. EDIT: It started raining outside in real life while I was writing this review. Wild

I'm unsure how to feel after completing the game. Should I feel content because death is a natural part of life that everyone must confront eventually? Or should I be saddened by its suddenness? Am I now more fearful of my own mortality, or less so? Undoubtedly, the game is a masterpiece in its own right. It has evoked quite a few tears from me. I will likely spend the entire night now pondering what I witnessed. MUST PLAY GAME!

Positive

The game has a linear playthrough, so you don't have much freedom to deviate from the plot. However, the story is enjoyable and well executed. The graphics are fabulous, with well-designed and vibrant house and rooms despite the dark setting. The end-game credits feature childhood pictures of the Edith Finch team members, which is fantastic. Overall, it's a superb experience with potential for replayability. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2851883098

Positive

Amazing game with an amazing story. Short, it took me 3.5 hours to complete at normal pace. If you ever read the book 100 years of Solitude, well this is story is very similar. If you have not read that book, and did enjoy this game, then get that book and read it.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the game to be amazing, particularly because of its story, which left a strong impression on me.
    • I appreciated that the game was short, as it took me only 3.5 hours to complete at a normal pace.
    • I noticed a strong similarity between the game's story and the book '100 Years of Solitude,' which I found intriguing.
    • I would recommend the book '100 Years of Solitude' to anyone who enjoyed the game, as they share similar storytelling qualities.

Negative

It definitely is an interesting story although at the end I was expecting some sort of ending, partial answers, something, that never came. But most of all, it made me sad. Maybe it's me being sensitive, or it's just about me having small kids, but having to go through the family's misfortunes just brought me down, for example having to
send Calvin flying off the swing
or especially having to
make 1-year-old Gregory drown
, those were actually hard to get through. I did appreciate the originality of it overall, and I would've given it a sideways thumb if I didn't have to choose from only two options.

  • Sentiments

    • I found the story to be interesting, but I was disappointed by the lack of a proper ending or partial answers, which left me unsatisfied.
    • The story made me feel sad, especially due to the emotional weight of the family's misfortunes.
    • I struggled emotionally with certain scenes, like having to send Calvin flying off the swing, which was hard to get through.
    • The scene where I had to make 1-year-old Gregory drown was particularly distressing and emotionally challenging.
    • I appreciated the originality of the story, which stood out to me as a positive aspect of the game.
    • I would have given the game a sideways thumb if there were more rating options, as I had mixed feelings about it.
    • The emotional impact of the story was heightened for me because I have small kids, making the family-related themes more personal.
    • I felt the game lacked closure, which left me wanting more from the narrative.
    • Despite the emotional challenges, I recognized the game's attempt to tell a unique and original story.
    • The game's themes and events resonated deeply with me, but not always in a positive way, due to their emotional intensity.

Negative

The FOV is incredibly small and can't be changed, there is an awful motion blur filter that you cannot turn off, and in the 10 minutes I played, the game would constantly take control of my camera and turn my character somewhere. Cannot recommend to anyone else suffering from motion sickness.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the FOV (Field of View) incredibly small and frustrating because it cannot be changed, which significantly impacts my gameplay experience.
    • I am extremely bothered by the motion blur filter that is present in the game and cannot be turned off, making it difficult for me to enjoy the visuals.
    • I feel frustrated that the game constantly takes control of my camera and turns my character in unwanted directions, disrupting my immersion and control.
    • I cannot recommend this game to anyone who suffers from motion sickness, as the combination of small FOV, motion blur, and forced camera movements makes it unbearable.

Negative

What Remains of Edith Finch is a very okay game. I'm outright admitting I do not get the hype. Definitely did not get the "feels" from the story that everyone bangs on about - there was perhaps one poignant moment in the whole game and even that was fleeting. I went in expecting Last Day of June-level emotional impact, and came out with very little. The game itself is well made - it does what it's trying to do really well. And it does very the "action" (or, really, the story-telling medium) pretty well. Graphically, the game looks really good. But there's really not much to the gameplay at all. In the end, finishing the story merely makes on wonder "So what was the point of all that?", which is a pretty big flaw in this kind of game in my opinion. I'm on the cusp of "Yes", but have to plumb for "No" when asked to recommend, unfortunately.

  • Sentiments

    • I find What Remains of Edith Finch to be a very okay game, but I do not understand the hype surrounding it.
    • I did not experience the emotional impact or 'feels' that many others have described, with only one fleeting poignant moment in the entire game.
    • I expected an emotional impact similar to Last Day of June but was left feeling very little after finishing the game.
    • The game is well-made and achieves what it sets out to do, particularly in its storytelling medium.
    • The game handles its 'action' or storytelling mechanics pretty well, which I appreciate.
    • Graphically, the game looks really good, which is a strong point in its favor.
    • There is very little to the gameplay itself, which I find disappointing.
    • Finishing the story left me wondering, 'So what was the point of all that?', which I consider a significant flaw for this type of game.
    • I am on the cusp of recommending the game but ultimately have to say 'No' when asked for a recommendation.

Negative

I must admit that I find the idea of exploring abandoned houses, rummaging through the belongings of the deceased, and searching for hidden treasures fascinating. However, What Remains of Edith Finch is a vastly different experience. The game follows Edith as she explores her childhood home, but instead of delving into the mysterious and dusty treasures that lie within, she simply walks through the rooms, occasionally stopping to reminisce about her family's past. The game's storytelling is presented through a series of trippy flashbacks from the deceased family members, which unfortunately lead to nowhere and fail to evoke any sense of mystery or intrigue. The overall message of the game feels like Edith simply talking about something I couldn't find much investment in during the brief playtime offered. I wouldn't say that this is much of a game, as it feels more like a visual novel or short film that is dragged on by slow-paced commentary attempting to evoke nostalgia or melancholy. Unfortunately, this didn't work for me, as I had no real connection to the characters due to the lack of time actually bonding with them. While What Remains of Edith Finch isn't horrible, it's also not particularly interesting or fun to play. I wouldn't recommend spending $20 on this game, especially considering the extremely short playtime – just two hours, and that would have been even less if I hadn't encountered a bug that soft locked me at the first level, forcing me to restart it.

  • Sentiments

    • I find the idea of exploring abandoned houses and searching for hidden treasures fascinating, which initially drew me to the game.
    • What Remains of Edith Finch is a vastly different experience from what I expected, focusing more on walking through rooms and reminiscing rather than exploring mysteries.
    • The storytelling through trippy flashbacks from deceased family members feels disjointed and fails to evoke a sense of mystery or intrigue.
    • The overall message of the game feels unengaging, as I couldn't find much investment in Edith's narrative during the brief playtime.
    • The game feels more like a visual novel or short film rather than a traditional game, which didn't align with my expectations.
    • The slow-paced commentary attempting to evoke nostalgia or melancholy didn't resonate with me due to the lack of connection with the characters.
    • I didn't feel a real bond with the characters, as there wasn't enough time spent developing their stories or personalities.
    • While the game isn't horrible, it also isn't particularly interesting or fun to play, leaving me underwhelmed.
    • I wouldn't recommend spending $20 on this game, especially considering its extremely short playtime of just two hours.
    • I encountered a bug that soft locked me at the first level, forcing me to restart, which added to my frustration with the game.

Negative
