I don't think a game has ever made me cry before I'm certain a game has never made me cry so hard I had to stop playing before Knock off around 15 minutes of playtime from how much I've played because that's when I started crying while the game was left open I don't think this will hit as hard with other people as it did with me but it will still hit you Man it just, felt like I was watching someone who'd put my life into a video game This review isn't up to the standards I'd usually hold myself up to so sorry about that but it would feel so wrong of me to not leave a positive review immediately I'll bring myself eventually to finish it and I'm sure this review will not have changed to a negative one but I just can't touch it right now, it's too good for me. EDIT: It started raining outside in real life while I was writing this review. Wild
I'm unsure how to feel after completing the game. Should I feel content because death is a natural part of life that everyone must confront eventually? Or should I be saddened by its suddenness? Am I now more fearful of my own mortality, or less so? Undoubtedly, the game is a masterpiece in its own right. It has evoked quite a few tears from me. I will likely spend the entire night now pondering what I witnessed. MUST PLAY GAME!
The game has a linear playthrough, so you don't have much freedom to deviate from the plot. However, the story is enjoyable and well executed. The graphics are fabulous, with well-designed and vibrant house and rooms despite the dark setting. The end-game credits feature childhood pictures of the Edith Finch team members, which is fantastic. Overall, it's a superb experience with potential for replayability. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2851883098
Amazing game with an amazing story. Short, it took me 3.5 hours to complete at normal pace. If you ever read the book 100 years of Solitude, well this is story is very similar. If you have not read that book, and did enjoy this game, then get that book and read it.
It definitely is an interesting story although at the end I was expecting some sort of ending, partial answers, something, that never came. But most of all, it made me sad. Maybe it's me being sensitive, or it's just about me having small kids, but having to go through the family's misfortunes just brought me down, for example having to
send Calvin flying off the swing
or especially having to
make 1-year-old Gregory drown
, those were actually hard to get through. I did appreciate the originality of it overall, and I would've given it a sideways thumb if I didn't have to choose from only two options.
The FOV is incredibly small and can't be changed, there is an awful motion blur filter that you cannot turn off, and in the 10 minutes I played, the game would constantly take control of my camera and turn my character somewhere. Cannot recommend to anyone else suffering from motion sickness.
What Remains of Edith Finch is a very okay game. I'm outright admitting I do not get the hype. Definitely did not get the "feels" from the story that everyone bangs on about - there was perhaps one poignant moment in the whole game and even that was fleeting. I went in expecting Last Day of June-level emotional impact, and came out with very little. The game itself is well made - it does what it's trying to do really well. And it does very the "action" (or, really, the story-telling medium) pretty well. Graphically, the game looks really good. But there's really not much to the gameplay at all. In the end, finishing the story merely makes on wonder "So what was the point of all that?", which is a pretty big flaw in this kind of game in my opinion. I'm on the cusp of "Yes", but have to plumb for "No" when asked to recommend, unfortunately.
I must admit that I find the idea of exploring abandoned houses, rummaging through the belongings of the deceased, and searching for hidden treasures fascinating. However, What Remains of Edith Finch is a vastly different experience. The game follows Edith as she explores her childhood home, but instead of delving into the mysterious and dusty treasures that lie within, she simply walks through the rooms, occasionally stopping to reminisce about her family's past. The game's storytelling is presented through a series of trippy flashbacks from the deceased family members, which unfortunately lead to nowhere and fail to evoke any sense of mystery or intrigue. The overall message of the game feels like Edith simply talking about something I couldn't find much investment in during the brief playtime offered. I wouldn't say that this is much of a game, as it feels more like a visual novel or short film that is dragged on by slow-paced commentary attempting to evoke nostalgia or melancholy. Unfortunately, this didn't work for me, as I had no real connection to the characters due to the lack of time actually bonding with them. While What Remains of Edith Finch isn't horrible, it's also not particularly interesting or fun to play. I wouldn't recommend spending $20 on this game, especially considering the extremely short playtime – just two hours, and that would have been even less if I hadn't encountered a bug that soft locked me at the first level, forcing me to restart it.
Idk I feel this game isn't my cup of tea or I'm simply too jaded and don't have a heart after all ........it was meh game for me, left me with mixed feelings. Beautiful art and story tho. If your curious about this game, buy it on sale it hurts less inside.
